Fishing with Rod

Күн бұрын

Over 100,000 chinook salmon return to Vancouver Island's Somass River every September. If you want to learn how to float fish for salmon, this is the place to do it. We spent a couple of days fishing with guides at ‪@murphysportfishing‬, which offers multi-day guided trips and lodge accommodations. Check out what ‪@LifeOfLindaLee‬ caught near the end of the video!

That river was sure full of salmon! Bobber and egg fishing has always been my favorite way to catch salmon, although I don't get to do that very often now. Our Coos Bay salmon are almost always "chromers"" since they are in salt water in the Bay and close to the ocean. However, the action is nothing like the fishing you just had. If you get one salmon in 5 hours of fishing that is a good day. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah they both can be fun for sure. 😄 For terminal fisheries like this one, lots of hook-ups like you mentioned but on some days you really have to pick and choose what to retain. We've also fished the Somass other years and I recall one year every single fish was chrome because river level was much higher, but fish were a lot more spread out.

Great video Rod and my fishing buddy and I both agree, we'd love a fishing buddy like Linda. Not just beautiful but knows what she's doing and what she is catching.

Love your videos Rod. Is it possible to do a DIY trip like this? I'm from Alberta, by the way. And could you access fishable areas by hiking in and fishing from shore?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Ай бұрын
Yep, you certainly can access this river system by foot, but it’s somewhat limited compared to other popular systems like the Chilliwack/Vedder River. It can get pretty busy due to limited space. With the guided trip from the boat it’s definitely quite a treat, especially good for retirees and kids.

First rule of fishing. The fish are always jumping, 'Just over there.' The aquatic version of, 'the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.'

Another excellent video Rod & Linda 👍🎣👍🎣. I'm really going to miss Salmon fishing😢, as I have moved back to England recently from Mission B.C. As you could pay up to 250 pounds to fish rivers, & NO guarantee that you will catch. .

It would depend on how high the water is I guess. I’ve seen the part where we fished in this video high and fast as well.

Nice video, is this Somass river near Port Alberni in Vancouver Island? We are planning a small family trip into this area at the end of this August. If it the same river i should get my fishing rod with me.

Yes. You should bring your rods for sure.

I was on the river yesterday, the river was smaller compared to the Vedder, but it was less crowded, ppl don't stay shoulder to shoulder ;). Plus the Coho and Chinook are bigger. Yesterday there were a lot of fish in the river , but most of it was sockeye salmon. Btw most of the ppl used flossing techniques for fishing. But I can confirm the standard setup with the bobber works as well.

Im still trying to figure out why you do everything with your right hand, yet you dont reel in with your left. Make it make sense 😅. Another great outing Rod!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Ай бұрын
It doesn’t make sense for sure, but it’s just an old habit that I’ve had for forty years now so never bothered to change. 😆 These days I do use both right and left handed reels though. The only thing I’ve noticed is that when I use a left handed reel, my right hand ended up to be quite sore from gripping the rod all the time. On the other hand, when I use a right handed reel, I have a tendency to switch hands often to hold the rod.

Lots of guests from Europe come to this lodge and only fly fish for them and they always have a blast. Hard on gear though, beside these ones we caught in the video, it's not uncommon to hook up specimens up to 25lb or more.

It has a reasonably good summer/fall steelhead return, better than winter. Murphys offers trips for those in October and November too.
