You could call the X17 sized axe a lumberjack's axe. Back in the days the sizing/fitting of the axes handle length was measured by standing next to the axe, then putting hand straight downwards. Overall length of the axe was right when you could touch the handle with your fingertips, axe standing on its head. Any bigger axe is more difficult to use and was recommended for the biggest logs as you mentioned on the video.

Good point! You use the same way to measure the proper walking stick for your height! For axes, another more common way, is to hold the axe head inside the palm of your hand, and put the end of it under your armpit. If it fits perfectly, that's the size your axe should be! As an example, I'm 1.84 cm and the perfect axe length for me is 65cm. Most medium size axes, are between 60-70cm. Only problem with axes nowdays, is that only Fiskars comes as it should be. The wooden classic ones, come with bad either thick or beant handles and really poor head geometries. that require a belt a lot of knowledge and time, to fix them.

Agree 110% as americans would say. Even though Fiskars bought Gerber years back to get into the US market-and yes lots of products are nowadays made in China- we proudly use them here in Finland. Helsinki lumberjack 1957

I have a Fiskars X25, have been using it a lot(I heat my house with wood- about 3-4 cords a year Fir and pine a year). I also have a splitting maul, but it is for the bigger rounds, and once I split those once I can take over with the x25. I have already ground some of the steel off the back of the X25 axe head, musroomed from using as a hammer on the splitting maul.Very interesting to see the internal construction of the Fiskars axe, it is a good steel not to brittle and hard, I have been lucky that the handle is not damaged, I will not use it as a sledge hammer from now on, This axe has earned it's keep. Thanks for your review.

Just saw this video: "FISKARS X10 HATCHET - DESTRUCTION TEST - UNTIL IT BREAKS - AXE TEST EXTREME - HANDLE OVERSTRIKES" It shows how insanely tough the Fiskars axe is.

tnx for the video. i was considering the x17 but i think it's too small for me as i'm 1,9 metters. x21 is a better fit for me. you should not use the long handle axe with one hand as you may bump the handle on something and the blade will come toward the hand holding the wood.

@@hhcosminnet I personally try not to even hold the wood with my off-hand at all. One slip while being tired or something and you hit your hand. This is not as huge concern if you keep your edge blunt, wear some gloves and lightly hold the wood from the middle with your off-hand. If you miss the axe just pushes your hand away. I like to keep my X17 sharp because I enjoy doing light carving with it too so I cannot miss and hit my hand.

Great review thanks. What do you think of their smaller axes X15, X11, X7?

Smaller ones are about the same, really strong and usable. Hard to break if used properly.

That’s the only downside to the Fiskars is that you can’t use them to hammer. I have an X7 for camping & odd jobs & I know I’ll be tempted to hit things with the back. If it breaks, I might go estwing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Please,Have you choped with this to fell a tree? I know it's a spliting axe, but I'm skeptical of getting it, as a versatile axe for creating firewood. Our wood here is 90% dry wood from Olive trees, super hard and super tough wood! Felling axes with thin cutting geometries and wide edges, don't cut that wood at all! Only similar to Fiskars head designs work. Have you used it for some chopping? Is it's geometry working at all? Theoritically it can work on hard woods. IF only I could still find the X15! I don't know why, but I can't' find it nowhere, it would fit the bill perfectly for me!

I do all cutting and tree felling with chainsaw, so all my ideas are just guessing. But i think that x17 is not very good for chopping trees down, i would use mayby thinner axe for that but our trees are softer than yours. Keimo

If I remember right fiskars axes has a forever warranty. All you have to do is send in a picture of your broken handle with axe head If you know a blacksmith I bet he can forge an axe head identical as that fiskars axes head made for a woodedit been done handle
