I have a Hansfors-Brucks forest axe and recently I also have a Fiskars X15. There is honestly no difference in the two axes other than the nice wood feeling of the hand-made, incredibly beautiful & sexy Swedish axe. The Fiskars is an absolutely outstanding chopping axe.

Definitely dont make your cut the width of the axe head unless its a very small tree. The width of the tree is a good rule of thumb, but widen as needed is the best advice I can give. & look out for knots & go around em when ya can lol. Always look up; widowmakers. Much easier to chop an alive tree, or a largely rotten tree, than a dead dry tree - I respect why you didnt want to cut a live one though, & try to only cut very sick & dying live ones myself. Youll get a feel for when the axe bites or when the wood fibers are so dense/unaligned (like a burl) that it spits the axe back out without cutting anything; when the latter two happens, widen & chip away. You want to be seeing large chips. Wood is strong against the grain, as in chopping through layers stacked on top of one another. Its weak with the grain, as in splitting wood. Changing sides/ angles around can help a lot; Ill cut into the sides of a log after doing some work to the top, beaver styley. The advice another person gave you below, in that you should chop in a 40-45° angle is solid advice as well. I'll chop in a "V" type pattern & work my way outwards on either side, chipping away. Picture your "v" going to the bottom of the log. Ive chopped logs 36 inches in diameter or better this way, making multiple cuts through in a single day, using a fiskars x27 - beast of an axe, definitely recommend. I have the x7 too - its an awesome hatchet, & I typically hate hatchets lol, I typically swear by my knockoff woodsmans pal (machete) for anything 12" in diameter or under, but ill carry my hatchet instead of it sometimes now. I have a chainsaw too, just save it for bigger stuff. & congrats on getting off the junk bro. Ive lost a lot of friends to hard drugs, mainly heroin & meth. Getting out in the outdoors is a great distraction. I hope you kept after it & I hope alls going well for you.

Planning to buy X11, but may I suggest that u should took about 40 - 45° angle side by side for chopping those branches, don't just swing the axe by straight cut cause u ain't getting much removals...if u are splitting the wood then there the use of straight swing of the axe..✌🏻

Alrighty then... following with the comentes... I can see a lot of room in that axe hollow handle to stuff it with something... and according to your situation of snow fire starters, I would full fill that room with cotton soaked with vaseline. Most people uses cotton balls, but I use some 100 % cotton rope that I cut in 3...4 inch length, and make "curls" or in coil spring structure, to be easier to put it in and take it off, and stuff as much as posible. And with the spark a ferro rod, BUM you´ve got long lasting flames.
