Shopping is a diversion. Love the saying’ One isn’t enough, but two is too many’♥️

Ooh that's an interesting saying - I don't know if I've heard it before but to me it almost implies to me that "enough" exists in the in-between space of one and two, or in other words, the space of "wanting another one" but not having or acquiring another. This actually makes a lot of sense if I think of it in terms of say, eating croissants...it's almost the best part after finishing the first one and feeling like it was so good you want another, but you know you won't have two...a different kind of satisfaction in a way. Thanks for sharing!

I like the idea of thinking about the final destination of any thing I introduce to my life. If I am not confident to love a particular item for at least five years, I won’t buy it.

This type of video is so refreshing. I am a shopaholic, and at this point, I am disgusted with the amount of stuff that I have and the constant buy/ declutter cycles and organizing. I just want to stop organizing as much and to live life. ❤❤❤❤

To add on to what you've said about "ask yourself before you buy" I now ask myself everytime I buy anything non-consumable "do I want this for life?" and the answer is frequently "no." I'm now so selective about what I bring into my life because of this. No buy truly rewired my brain and for me it was a muscle that got better with more practice and use!

Agree with how fast it turns into “making excess”. I also noticed that I approached what I own with a feeling of “lack”, and naturally, nothing was ever enough if you see things that way. Now I try to see it through the idea of “having just enough”.

Yes, you're right! I just recorded a chat (probably for next week!) about how it is easier to stop shopping if you can get rid of the "fantasy of shopping" where just like you say, it's "never enough" - you never really reach the point of the "last one" or "last purchase" if you are always kind of in "shopping mode".

I am 48 years old and only just started thinking about ysing up things and the impact Our consumption has on Our World, about 6-7 years ago. I am not a big makeup person, but i do wear it every day. I have one of each thing that i use, exept for lipsticks, for some reason i bought way to many, i decided a few years ago to maximum have 4 and yesterday i just finished my first lipstick in my entire life. That i insane, i do not even want to think about how many lipsticks i have thrown away in the last 30 years. I now have 3 and i am not going to bye a new one umtil i am down to 2. Love your content ❤. Love from switzerland ❤

Wow congrats on finishing a lipstick! I think lipstick is one of those things that is so easy (and for some people, fun) to buy or shop for, but so hard to use up. So we have to be careful, and also watching beauty "influencers" swatching hundreds of lipsticks and having huge makeup collections can make us think it is normal to have 20 or more, when most of us really only use a few colors regularly. So you're doing great work! I would love to visit Switzerland someday, I hear it is very beautiful 💜

I came to similar conclusions about makeup. It’s one of the areas I got influenced heavily by KZfaq. I had a similar journey from more artistic makeup to more utilitarian. It takes me probably 5 years to use a blush at this point lol. No longer buying eyeshadow palettes. I’m really upset with myself for buying 8 lipsticks in search of a dupe for a particular MAC one. I’m about to go into my makeup drawer again and declutter today after seeing this. Like many people, Covid changed my makeup habits. I’m embarrassed that I have stuff in this drawer from 2020.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
Honestly I'm not sure I've EVER finished a blush! I totally feel you on buying a bunch of lipsticks in search of "the one" or a dupe for a particular one! Not to mention that if we are online, we see influencers showing 10 different lipsticks compared to each other everyday and that's what they do as their "job"...it's just so hard to keep a "normal" perspective!

Excellent points all around. When you were discussing “making excess” - I suddenly realized how perfect the timing was: I was in the process of mending a favorite 25 year old (acrylic!) sweater. (Trying to get to the bottom of my mending basket. Very satisfying!) You made excellent points! Yesterday I went to the mall to suss out a store I never even went into because it seemed "everybody" was talking about its annual sale. The products were not cheap by any means, but I guess I was drawn to it because of the fantasy self. Going to the physical store turned out to be a great idea because I could try the products and realize I wasn't really missing out. Plus, I felt so out of place I realized that even if I could buy the whole store, I wouldn't become a different person all of a sudden. And you're absolutely right about how little it takes for something to become excess. I never thought about it like that and wish I had!
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
I actually think that things often look better online or when an influencer is showing them on camera, than they do in-store when you touch them yourself! I've even thought this about some of the "stuff" in my own videos, it's crazy. Influencers are feeding the "fantasy self" idea in my opinion and the fact that we go to physical stores less and less makes it easier to fall into the traps!

My weaknesses are clothes, shoes/boots, and make up, in that order. The problem with make up (mostly lipstick) is that some of my "colors for life" get discontinued. Oh, the angst! I have even resorted to finding them on ebay and paying a lot more than they were retail. Sooo, I have very often bought multiples of the new ones I find and fall in love with. Some of these just don't work out, some break, some get lost, but at least I always have my back up stash. 😁

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts! Thank you for sharing ❤From my own journey of intentional purchases and decluttering, I now think that the search for the "Holy Grail" item or "the ultimate, perfect" item could often lead to dissatisfaction and trapping myself into a never-ending search (which inevitably entails waste of time, energy, and money). So now I stop myself from buying excess whenever I almost fall into that trap.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
Yes! Dissatisfaction is the result we can always count on in the search for the "best" one, brands are always competing to release the NEXT "best" product and it just never ends! You are right!

This is a fun discussion. I like this line of thinking quite a bit. When it comes to clothes I definitely have an epic collection, but I think of stuff I bring into my closet as part of personal branding. "Do I like it? Does it fit into the Jacqueline Decker brand?" Because if it's part of the brand it should be there consistently for the next 10 years, since I'm now 29 and looking at having kids.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
This is a good function of a brand! I am actually talking about "brands" in a video this coming week 👀 "Looking at having kids" is also a time for shopping pitfalls regarding clothing, both for reasons of body changes and lifestyle change - I haven't totally given up my "nice clothes" or "style" (personal brand, you could say) since having kids myself, but I definitely have to change when I get home these days if I've worn something to work that I don't want to have to wash!

"Use value" is a term used often in Marx's Capital to describe the value of a tool or good as consumed/used and to differentiate it from market value or trade value. (In volume 1, which is the only one he actually wrote fully, that wasn't pieced together by Engels). He had to be atomistic about that definition because he was not dealing with diversification of labor skill, individual means of making money as a business, or elasticity of demand in creation of his ideas around 'use value'. The reason I bring this up is because I am highlighting that there is support for the idea that "use value", which Marx assumed was the full life of a pick axe a miner bought, for example, could be a much shorter window in the mind of a consumer buying a product today. The "use value" for the buyer could be trying the makeup a couple times, or filling out a collection--which is also probably why in a true Marxist economy makeup would be unlikely to exist as it is not utilitarian. Edit: at this point I think the use value of influenced shopping is to make the influencer money 😂
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
Ok I need to educate myself on this (perhaps read Marx - I've been thinking of doing this for quite some time actually) because it sounds like there could be some interesting ideas and context for me here! Thank you for bringing this up! And yes it is that kind of "use value" that I absolutely cannot get behind - the idea that influencers only promote products to make themselves money, rather than genuine recommendations....or even if they aren't doing that on purpose and they think they ARE genuine recommendations, they promote more products than would ever be organically needed by anybody, just to make money. Now that I've seen it I can't unsee it!

I saw a forum thread on contentedness, linked from a WSJ post last year, and while the discussion itself is on fashion and consumption habits, the idea to step away from shopping towards appreciation, or contentedness for the things we own already, was insightful. While I am also working on my own insecurities and developing other hobbies, I also needed to reframe that shopping itch. And that was: maybe the new (or thrifted) thing doesn’t have that different of an effect, from what I already have. And that there’s also a certain pride from using a bag or garment for x amount of years. Another thing that’s helped me is to realize that I was spending more time than I’d like thinking about aesthetics and design elements, in clothing and decor. And it can get overwhelming when I’m doing that, as if on autopilot! So it’s been helpful for me to be aware of that habit and stepping back when I can.

Again a bit of devil's advocacy: I recently bought a summer shirt at a resale store and it is now my very favorite piece of clothing! It was probably too expensive when new for me to have considered so beautifully made of great material. Sometimes it's just time for a new piece. But caution and control need to be part ( an important part as you remind us!) of the equation

Haha I do hate grocery shopping but love every other shopping 😂 I like the idea of visualizing a product’s end of life to understand where ultimately this item will end up. I have never done that but I think it will be helpful. I’m with you on viral products, that is my weak spot and social media capitalizes on this insecurity in me. I love to try the best products but now it does seem like the whole viral label doesn’t mean anything anymore. Influencers claim everything is the best thing ever but I know now they just want to sell something and get paid 😅 and since starting a short term no buy, I have found myself enjoying the stuff I currently have so I hope I can continue to stay strong! As I mentioned in my last video, I went through the devastation of hurricane beryl in Houston this week and that really taught me how important savings are (especially in Texas). I have power now but some people are still without and not everyone necessarily has the funds to book a hotel or extra cash to go out every day for fresh food. It has been a hellish week but the city is slowly coming out the other side but the lessons is to always have an emergency fund.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear Ай бұрын
You're right and I think the "everything is a viral product" thing is actually making it easier - I used to really want to try every "viral" product too but now there are just so many that it feels ridiculous, like not everything can be a viral-worthy product and at this point it's just being used to sell and make money. So happy to hear you now have power and I hope you didn't have other damages to deal with, hopefully life is getting back to normal - I think I had a similar realization when the tornadoes happened here in the Midwest and really damaged houses a few miles from where I live and thinking that if that DID happen to us, we would very quickly have to start relying on credit cards because exactly like you said, we wouldn't have $$ to stay at a hotel and eat out for very long before we ran out of our emergency fund, so we really need to build that up more!
@alcnwonderlnd
@alcnwonderlnd Ай бұрын
Life is returning to normal, thankfully, and our complex didn't suffer much property damage. Although I think it may be time to leave Texas! I do not think I have it in me to try to survive another storm..I have been through a few in my lifetime, and I'm over it. I hope everyone is doing well, and I know it's easier said than done to save money for emergencies, but I believe in us to do it!

Right? Children are encouraged to have that kind of hobby and spend a lot of time doing those sorts of things, whereas for adults it's a lot harder I think!
