Causality applied to Tennis, pure and simple. Applied as per Mario's instructions the swing of the arm becomes the effect while firing the hips is the cause. And firing the hips starts by loading/unloading the right leg which is started by using the off arm properly while coiling. Keep up the great work, Coach!

Hello Mario. Great stuff and so many useful tips from you! Love your analytical skills. However, can I argue a bit? Isn’t all this mystery regarding “keeping the racquet on the hitting side of the body” much simpler? I mean: just keep you wrist closed. If you do this, there’s no way that racquet will cross the line of your back. It’s clearly visible that Federer, Nadal, Murray and others have closed wrist while doing forehands. And most WTA players are doing forehand take back with open wrist which automatically places the racquet head behind their back. See Halep, Kvitova and others. And ladies, which have ATP forehand (Sakkari, Kerber) have closed wrist. Maybe I am mistaken and you can point where?
@MarioRITennis
@MarioRITennis 3 жыл бұрын
I’m almost sure I understand what you mean. That’s for sure one way to explain it, are you a tennis instructor? Teaching this method, and I’ve been trying for 10 years, takes 10 times more work then just allow the student to do a “wta” backswing, Muchova who just beat Osaka is another great example of a girl “crossing over” the ATP model. The principle is simple as into how to do it, and there are a few ways to simplify it call mom at someway or another it’s a very hard thing for students to keep the wrist “closed” , Thank you for the input!

Is breaking the plane really that bad? We see most WTA players, including Serena and Halep, breaking the plane yet they have forehand most people can only dream of. My thought is breaking the plane gives you more “runway” to accelerate the racket. The downside is one might not have enough time to hit the ball clean. It’s a trade-off, similar to if you want to emulate delPo’s big loop forehand or a more compact forehand like Federer. My experience experimenting both is its very hard to hit a powerful one with compact swing. Would love to hear your thoughts 👍🙏🎾
@MarioRITennis
@MarioRITennis 3 жыл бұрын
No but yes, many female junior coaches are trying to teach the ATP forehand to their students, we are starting to see more WTA players (Jen Brady) use the ATP forehand, and I am sure it will show up more and more. It is not a compact swing, it is just that the WTA swing is too big of a swing. Further more it is important that the ATP forehand uses the energy the Kinetic Chain provides, and for the most part a high percentage of the WTA forehand can't take advantage of that energy, as it breaks the order of the Chain. Justin Henin was a great example of a perfectly executed use of that energy and an "ATP" forehand. Thank you for your reply, your point is well taken.

@@MarioRITennis The WTA FH takes full advantage of the kinetic chain, female players, the vast majority use it today to hit FH’s harder than Henin ever could. Osaka can clock a FH over 100mph, she has very good command of the kinetic chain and order of operations. Henin has been retired for many years yet the WTA swing still dominates and there’s nothing major going on at the tour level to suggest things will change. Jason Bourne has made good points. Respecting the differences between the atp game and the WTA game is crucial to understanding the FH stroke differences. The women hit flatter (less spin) to penetrate the court. For most women, trying to use the atp swing would be a disaster because they’d lose pace and produce low spin balls that would sit up and get crushed. Respecting the anatomical differences between male and female players is vital to helping them achieve their potential and also ending the unproductive endless what is better atp vs WTA FH stroke debate.
@poida007
@poida007 3 жыл бұрын
@@bournejason66 Good points Jason, you are correct in your observations. There are very few WTA players using an atp FH because it just isn’t a good option for them due to the characteristics of the women’s game (hitting flatter to generate pace vs using heavy spin) and their anatomical strengths vs men, greater flexibility being just one. Not to disrespect Mario’s position, but rather offer an alternative POV. This debate and prediction about WTA women adopting the atp FH swing model is an American obsession which has been going on for years but has subsided because enough time has passed to show it doesn’t work for the vast majority of elite female players. European coaches (and other leading tennis nations) don’t waste their time with coaching it, they are more interested doing things with their players (male and female) that result in winning slams and dominating the top 10 and 20 rankings. You can clearly see these results in the men’s game. There are no American top 10 and few top 20 players in the atp and no slam winners since Roddick in 2003. The data speaks for itself. There’s a heck of a lot more to winning than having good technique let alone defining just what good technique is. Daniil Medvedev is a great example. Lots of American coaches criticizing his FH technique but no one developing a player from the US that can beat him in ranking points, titles, and prize money. Here’s an excellent video of a European born coach working with a WTA player on trying to learn the ATP FH. I think you’ll find it interesting and informative and keen to hear your feedback. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9aCrZSC1quvo4E.html

I do agree that the throwing motion is a good way to swing and is adopted by most men, but I don't think it's the only way to do it. For example Medvedev has a more WTA stroke with an arm that goes right back yet he beats all the other men with next gen ATP forehands. Body shape does seem to matter, and in general men are built to throw in a way that women aren't - men tend to prefer short and explosive hip movement (strong legs) into a throwing motion powered by the shoulders (broad muscled shoulders). Women tend to prefer a longer torso rotation (wide hips) pulling the racket around hitting closer to the body due to lacking the explosive leg power and the shoulder strength. In addition womens elbows bend slightly differently (arms straight in front of you, palms up, hands touching, women can get their elbows to touch men can't) so they can get the racket behind them better.

Cliff notes.....Backswing is first and foremost a body turn, not an arm motion. While coiling the body, lead the elbow back which keeps the racket on the front side of coronal plane.

@@MarioRITennis Too funny. The instincts love keeping the work in front of the body. That is why it is important to keep your hands on the front side of your body and the so called ATP forehand is for everyone. The coronal plane is the line you drew at 0:44 and perfectly divides the body into front and back halves. Simply leading the elbow back while making a full body turn is as simple as it gets for the backswing, as described by Vic Braden's "Tennis for the Future" in 1977. You are right about the kinetic chain, and this is non negotiable. Where are you located?

If the girl in the video gets the ball in the court and wins her matches, her technique is good, especially if she can do this at advanced junior and pro levels. Girls are built differently than guys and their swings have adapted to meet the demands of the women’s game, which is different than the men’s game and their technique. The top women in the WTA do not have atp technique for a very good reason. Winning matches vs technique copying because winning pays your bills, technique doesn’t. Serena Williams has done quite well with her WTA swing. Read Brad Gilbert, former top 4 ATP “Winning Ugly”. Here’s the correct approach to understanding and respecting the difference between the WTA women’s FH vs the ATP men’s FH. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9aCrZSC1quvo4E.html

@@MarioRITennis Thanks Mario. Important to be able to agree to disagree. Yes, Justin and Samantha Stosar both had ATP style FHs but neither could match Serena, Venus who didn't. Long after Justin retired the women on tour have not adopted the ATP FH model for good reason. They are 2 players out of thousands of WTA players over the years who do not have an ATP swing including the top young WTA players today like Barty, Osaka, Brady, Mertens, Pegula, Halep etc. etc. Why try to force something that is not natural or optimal? Did you watch the video in my previous message? Clearly, the WTA player couldn't make the change nor should she try or be coerced to do so by a well meaning but misguided coach.

@@MarioRITennis No more than Justin Henin was in a class by herself and a good model to promote your cause. I have no cause, but rather just stating the obvious. How many years have come and gone and not another female player has come along to win slams with an ATP FH? That fact alone should tell you that teaching an ATP FH for the WTA game and player characteristics is a non starter. No different than trying to teach the Federer FH to a young male player makes no sense and Federer himself said this, that his forehand is complex and not a good model to copy. It’s strange that American tennis coaches seem to think it is and make endless videos about trying to “model it”. An American male hasn’t won a slam since early 2000, Andy Roddick. Coaching problems are a big reason and endless KZfaq copy Federer FH technique videos are an insight to this problem. American coaches are obsessed with technique, European coaches are obsessed with winning Slams and dominating top 10 rankings. America’s best male prospect is Seb Korda. Fortunately his Czech father and former Slam champ is his coach and they’re allowing him to develop his own strengths. Enjoying the discussion but appreciate and understand different points of view being shared. My main point is that technique is only a part of the winning formula and that it is unique to each player. Daniil Medvedev is a great example. Here's an interactive NY Times article on Osaka's 100mph WTA FH by sports scientist Marc Kovacs explaining the kinetic chain and order of operations - sequencing) www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/09/08/sports/tennis/naomi-osaka-us-open.html

@@poida007 kind of hard for me to talk about other coaches or players as I’m not sure exactly what they are thinking, maybe you do?
