The gear oil in your FJ Cruiser keeps friction to a minimum and ensures the long life of your differential gears. Changing the oil in the rear differential is an easy maintenance activity that keeps your off road rig motoring forward, saves money and allows you to learn a little more about your 4×4 adventure vehicle.
You will find more information about changing your rear differential oil at - www.lastgreatroadtrip.com/4x4-...
Don't have an FJ Cruiser, these step also work on other Toyota trucks include Tacoma, 4runner, parado and Lexus gx470

Leave the oil bottles in the sun for a few hours before you do the job; this will allow the oil to flow a little faster/easier. If it's cold out, put them (sealed, of course) in a bucket of warm water

In some differential applications, a friction modifier additive is necessary to reduce chatter. Using Amsoil Severe Gear® we did not need an additive for our applications. Check out Amsoil Slip Lock Differential Additive on their website for more info.

Another very good reason to take the fill plug out first is incase it is rounded off or seized shut to where it won't come off you still have oil in there and can continue to drive.

@BORN2LOSE13 Check your owners manual for the specific weight recommended for your year. We have recorded a front diff oil change... however we have to redo it since the video is not very clear. The steps are the same and the same gear oil works front and back. removing the plugs requires an allen rather than socket. The fill hole is pretty tight so we ran a long hose and funnel from the engine compartment and let gravity do the work.

Hi guys I need some help, I have a toyota prado kzj95 series 2003 Turbo Diesel, when I activate the 4x4 (4H) and make a slow closed turn, the front diferential makes a metalic "clack" sound every complete turn of the wheel, I tried it on gravel, grass and asphalt same sound, checked with 2 other prados and none of them had it. The diferential oil level was ok, what do you think it could be?? I'm taking it to a shop but im tired of getting riped off, thanks for any help provided!

The rear differential is how the power from the transmission is sent to the wheels... The ring and pinion gears in the diff generate heat, as they distribute the power to the rear wheels, that eventually breaks down the gear oil. Check your vehicle's maintenance schedule to see how often the manufacture recommends changing the oil.

The owner's manual in my 2008 FJ cruiser lists different weights for the front and rear diff. But it lists 75W 90 for the transfer case. Would I be okay using the same 75-90 for front rear diffs and transfer case?
@lastgreatroadtrip
@lastgreatroadtrip 7 жыл бұрын
kyle plekavic surprised to hear your 2008 manual lists different viscosity then our 2007 since they didn't change until 2010 but we recommend following the manual for your truck. 75-90 is the standard across most manufacturers when it comes to diff lube.

My garage floor has a verrrry slight drain towards the garage door. That said, I know too much in an engine is bad...what about the diffs, tranny, and t-case? I've put a grand total of 3 miles on it since the change.
@lastgreatroadtrip
@lastgreatroadtrip 5 жыл бұрын
The same holds true since pressure can build up but a few ounce is not a lot and the rear diff breather is designed to release the pressure as the rear end heats up... A slight off level shouldn't make much difference and if you're concerned you can find a flat location and open the fill plug and check the oil level again. The nice thing about the way these diffs and transfer cases are designed is that full is right at the fill plug and excess can just drain until it is leveled off.

MrRedskins0021 Most folks we know with newer FJCs use 75w 90 and no problems. Not sure why Toyota went with non-standard grades on some of their oils. Unless you take it to a dealer for service, you'll end up with more standard viscosity put in by the shop since is covers the OEM requirement.

Mundher Al Lawati if you go with a gear lube that meets the specifications in the owner's manual you should not hear any clatter in the gears... There are additional additives that can be used if it becomes a problem but we never had any trouble. The Toyota maintenance schedule recommends changing front and rear diff fluid every 15k miles (that is a little excessive unless you're towing or lots of off road driving). But your gears do generate a lot of heat and will break down the oils and additives. A complete change is the only way to ensure you're gears are receiving the lubrication they need. Thanks for the question.

+Last Great Road Trip thanks for your reply.. I recently opened my front and rear diffs and it was at 80% so I toped it of with toyota diff oil .. never did anything before that for my diffs .. everything is ok and no problems right now .. but I guess its better to change it compeletly as you said .. thanks alot ..

Always check your owners manual for exact fluid type and quantity. Even on the same vehicle, the manufacturer may make year to year changes. The owners manual will usually list out the fluids (quantity / type / viscosity) requiring regular maintenance.

is better to go with the original oil brands , dont try those alternative brand oils ...use the original toyota oil for limited sleep diffs and valvoline or mobil as original lubricants for normal diffs...dont try ams or cheaper alternatve oil in toyota

thanks for sharing your opinion on oils. It is key that you ensure the fluids meet your trucks requirements which are usually listed out in the owner's manual.
