I think a tram along the coastal road is ideal, and I think unlock all tiles is necessary because there’s really no space to fit that many people into, while keeping the city how you want it - it will also only get worse for future milestones

A tip for more realism: I just turned "advanced parking AI (TM:PE) on in my game and that means that people will park their car before they go somewhere in the city (so not just put the car in their pocket). Your car parking will be used a lot more but it also requires you to always think about parking availability or it will be a mess with ppl driving around looking for a spot. Maybe you can give it a shot, since you like making things hard for yourself lol

Not like, dirty industrial, it would be warehouses. So you’d bring in cargo and goods to the warehouses close to the city for local delivery. At least that’s what I had in mind

i think adding some small parks and green areas to the downtown would be cool! plus, maybe changing the avenues to grass or tree medians, to give them a bit of colour. also, maybe the area to the right of the trainlines could be cool to have offices, at they don't really care about noise, but they won't contaminate, specially if you want to put a big park across the avenue triangle. ("right of the trainlines" at they are seen at 42:52). also also, i think it could be cool to use the big beach in front of the city more "commercially" - putting a ferris wheel there, a bunch of restaurants and piers, hotels, maybe even some kind of other amusement park type thing. and it could be nice to have a bit of a school campus across the road from the park - put an elementary and a high school, both more urban looking and more tightly packed with buildings next to them, that could use the park as school green space

Big fan of the city layout. I’ve only got a couple notes: 1) You should plan out a streetcar line (maybe along the ocean?) 2) I think it would be good to swap out some of the regular streets for some thinner alleys. 3) The railways look good, and it looks like you could set them up pretty easily for a line north, west, and east. The only thing is if you want a separate line for intercity rail or not.
@Flabaliki
@Flabaliki 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point about the intercity train line!
@erintheeggsalad5263
@erintheeggsalad5263 2 жыл бұрын
It might be helpful for some of those thinner streets to be alternating one-way roads as well. You'll also want to connect the stadiums with a few different modes of public transit-especially if you end up putting industrial up over there (at least from my experience of living in Seattle where the industrial zone and stadiums overlap). It could be good to have the tourism/leisure district along the beach, too.

@@Flabaliki For the stadiums. You might want to build a Stadiums in different parts of the City (as not all of it is possible in the Downtown). In the Downtown, please consider possibly adding Sports Stadiums and facilities that come from Australia (your home Country) as well such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground (possibly the Olympic layout), and the Rod Laver Arena, an Aquatics Center and possibly the Matchday DLC Stadium for Soccer. The layout looks great by the way! Please also consider building a big Public Transportation Hub (especially having another Train Central Station, Trams, Bus Terminal, Taxis, Metro, and Monorail) for the main International Airport especially.

I worry that there won't be enough space for housing to bring your population back up, but if u unlock everything that won't be a huge problem since you'll have a lot of space. Around the train maybe it should be a leisure area cause of the noise. You already got tons of industry already so Idk if its a good idea, plus it's gonna make the traffic get real bad. Unless you put them close to the cargo port close to that tunneling highway. In the city maybe it'd look more interesting to have bicycle roads or bus roads and smaller roads that go one way. I think those big roads take too much space. Tho that could make it needlessly complicated for you. Trams was an amazing idea. I'm no skylines expert or planning genius or anything so take my input with a grain of salt. 👍

long comment, but i have a couple ideas. for a theme park, you could build one on one of the islands or on point of land that sticks out. in the UK we have a theme park called thorpe park (you probably know it), situated on an island near London. i think that could be pretty cool. a zoo would be a good thing to fill the hills with on the outskirts of the city, a zoo i visited in belfast (northern ireland) is situated on hills, overlooking belfast city. a tramline along the beach front or throughout the city would be cool. quite a few coastal cities where i’m from have seaside tramlines. as well as the city i live in has a tramline throughout the city centre for workers & shoppers! luv the series x

I think you should either build two zoo's or the zoo near the water, because of the sealife/water enclosure. A themepark might also look really cool if you build it on a pier in the tourism/leisure commercial section. and... I would love to see a rich neighbourhood, like miami or beverly hills, With huge mansions near the city, but on the outskirts.

Hey James! Two things I'd say - firstly, you might want a few larger grid blocks because some of the skyscrapers and custom buildings are pretty huge and your grid is pretty small. Secondly, you might want to slow down the speed of your roundabouts when you use highway roads - having them at 100kmph makes it harder for cars to enter onto the roundabout. Also can you imagine driving around one at that speed lol. Weeee! Otherwise I think it will look great :)

Wouldn't the park be further from the industry? I feel like land around the park would be more valuable, especially if it's that close to the train station. It could be cool if part of the park was on the flat land and part on the hill. And in the industrial area there should be some data centers and tech related industries, like in San Jose/silicon valley. Also, a seperated bikeway/greenway connecting the parks and the beach, then going to the suburbs would be great idea.

I really like the road layout. It never stops surprising me how natural and alive you can make your cities to be (my cities always look very dead in the sense that they lack a personality if it makes sense). I am very on-board with the zoo idea. I think it could look very very cool. The only thing that I would maybe change is the highway going to Bedford because for highway it seem much too curvy. I know it is going around the mountain but I don't know if it would be built like that in reality. BUT I'm not an expert so I may be wrong. All in all amazing episode I learned a lot from you explaining your thought process behind placing roads. Love this series.

The layout seams great to me ! May I suggest some small modification : I would just add a plaza in front of the railway station. I think it would look more realistic. Therefore the train station might have to move back a bit ! The hayway that runs between the rail line and the hill, could be moved the other side of the hill, along the river. It would require a small portion of tunnel and might be a bit jammed along the tile border but it would be then less intrusive in the city center ! Thank for the video 😊 I'm eager to see the outcome !

hey james, the planning is the fun part, imo. a few suggestions: - you can set UUI to have more columns than 5, basically one row, looks neater. - the highway going through the city (next to bedford) could be the 2-way 4-lane highway from vanilla+. with sound barriers, because you know, poor citizens. - from what I've seen in various stations, train tracks go straight as they merge. the mergee is straight, I mean. - the hill next to the train station could be a park, accessible via cable cars, and a long, winding road, maybe, to encourage public transport use. - for the 4-way interchange you could get a compact one from the workshop. - the industry could be forestry, so the trains wind through it, and you know, more green space. - you could leave some blocks, and then put the large science buildings of the university there. you know, expand the area there, and then erase the middle part. or, the hill could be the university extension, and you could also put an observatory there. regarding mods: - could you please adjust the tree LoD from tree anarchy, the redwoods esp. look like a toddler's drawn them with the slightest distance. (this is more of a plea.) - you can use hide it! for cleaning up the UI. the gear, radio, disaster etc, all (can be) gone! - toggle it! is more functional than togglable whiteness, you can also toggle district policy icons, grid, district names etc. easily. - watch it! to replace the upper left button menu. always there, but blends in, overall great. - also, I've recently replaced ultimate eyecandy, shadow strength adjuster, sharp textures, daylight classic with "play it!", "theme mixer 2", and "render it!". major recommend. - and also plop the growables and rico with ploppable RICO revisited, includes the functionalities of both. ps: the mods part I posted to the previous video, but it had links, so sorry if that part is a repeat.

Yeah I think the layout is great! The train station is in a very nice spot (perfect for a metro along the coast too), your idea for a highway running past Bedford and joining on is excellent and definitely go ahead with that plan (can’t wait to see what sort of interchange you conjure up). Cargo Port idea is terrific too. I honestly though I’d have some sort of suggestion to add, but no, I think everything you’ve done is great and flawless. Oh, and that tunnel you were speaking of about bypassing the suburbs I would recommend doing, should stop that overflowing of suburban traffic and help spread the load of traffic coming off the highway (and obviously prevent industrial traffic from the high density area going through the suburbs en route to the industrial areas)

1) Some of the thin roads might be cool in the city, especially if there are some right-angled roads or alleys with no way through 2) In my own hometown, the actual transition between "downtown" and suburbia is marked by the interstate on one side. Basically to the South of the interstate, dense city, the north? A few big apartment and office buildings transition straight into houses and parkspace. Other areas that transition away from the city go from pseudo-skyscrapers, to town houses & smaller 3 story apartments, to regular houses. In your the train or some other transport could also work 3) Also, in terms of adding angled roads, it can help to think where people would think going around a block was too far (making shortcuts), and instead opted for a diagonal road through. Or make the backbone road not adhere to the grid that most other roads do I'm loving the massive rail line, it's so cool

I really like the train connection because I feel like that’s always where many people struggle to find a good and realistic balance. I would suggest that the third track could follow the middle track around that little mountain but then branch off to the left suburbs and then follow the coast to the edge off the map. It would also really increase the realism if you would add a couple switches as well as another small station (maybe with a bypass for faster trains) in the north of the suburbs (where you added that bridge over the road)

I like the layout and looking forward to the four way interchange. I think having the airport in the northwest in peninsula where the quick crap city was would be good. You can connect to the highway and have subway and train connections close to the city. Let most of the sprawl happen north and east of the city. I highly recommend looking at Boston infrastructure because roads aren’t perfect grids, lots of bridges and tunnels, commuter rail is common, and Logan Airport is favorite compared to places like Denver and Dallas. D.C. airport is second favorite.

Super late since this was 6 months ago, but for the tracks going into the station, you'd probably want 4 lines going in, 2 uplines, which would be one for commuter services and another for intercjty/High speed services, and then the same for the 2 downlines. That's what it's like here in the UK, I mean I have no idea if this sort of train logic is in the game but im a bit of a train nerd and there was finally an opportunity to talk trains😂

I think that the new road at the foot of the hills is going to be packed of traffic to the port. Seems a really interesting challenge!! Also you can build a tunnel underneath the old waterfront (or under the castel hill and the bay) towards the site of the airport, so the traffic will be diverted from the city road

I'm the same way - I play a lot of Transport Fever 2, but have no idea what I'm doing with trains even though I think they're cool. I end up referencing the train yards here in Chicago pretty often in my builds!

Loving this series! Had an idea regarding the park in the downtown area. Unique building Central Park???

There should be a parking lot on the beach-side of the coastal road, so that people can park there to go straight to the beach. This city is reminding me a lot of Wellington actually, with the multi-platform train station and the coastlines and the winding highways

I think maybe an amusement park on that island in the river would be interesting and fun

I feel like you should do a ring road around, kind of how you planed it, just a bit further away from the downtown. If it remains like this all the traffic will have to go throught downtown or really near it. Maybe do the ring road from the already existing interchange near downtown.

We have what are called "frontage roads" here... it's a small road that runs next to a highway or larger road to keep the number of joins to the main road limited. The smaller "neighbourhood" roads all join to that frontage road. That could work in some parts of your city.

I would love it if they had similar build mechanics for railways in this game like they do in Transport Fever. I love both games. I think better track building would really be a great qualify of life improvement. I'm loving your city build

27:27 The current road could be raised instead, leaving room for a tunnel that goes through the hill

I think my only criticism of that downtown plan is that it’s unlikely a stadium would be out there where there are so few links to a major road. Obviously you can stuff it with public transport links, but realistically you’d have a metric butt ton of people driving through the local downtown roads to get to the stadium every time there’s a game, so it would be more likely that the stadium gets built on the other side of the downtown.

You kind of addressed it at the end there, but the only thing I don't like about the downtown layout is there is no bypass to go around the downtown. People have to drive through it which wouldn't seem ideal. The highway should branch before Bedford. Going the way you already built it but then joining the main road to the town you already created (that connects to Bedford).
