After seeing this in car factory videos, I tried it at home with a propane torch and my garbage bin. The paint was easy to pick off the untreated areas, but it stuck securely to the treated area. No post cleaning. Amazing.

It's not too bad, so many people get way too involved in flame treating and all the science behind it. All it does is change the molecluar structure of the exterior on the plastic, and makes it rougher so that paint will stick to it.

I’ve seen people use large propane burners to re-condition like stadium seats in the such. Can you do a video on that sort of restoreration? Or can you provide information as to what the actual outcome would be? We are hobby kayakers, and have some of our boats that are sun faded etc. I’ve been considering re-conditioning mine with a large barreled, propane torch. Can you touch on whether this is a good idea or not or the long terms affect of restoration of this kind?

@surfingcuriositywaves4046

Good stuff here. Note that you need an 'oxidizing flame' that looks blue because you are not just heating the surface, you are oxidizing the surface. This will be different than a 'reducing flame' that is more yellow. A reducing flame is designed to heat more slowly, as with the settings on a bunsen burner, and the yellow flame has more unburned contents that show up as sooty smoke above the yellow flame. The source of the fuel just helps with control, so not just propane. Even using a kerosene campstove can get this effect, as long as the flame is hot blue.

@surfingcuriositywaves4046

@@strawberrysuperglue Yes, either of them CAN be adjusted to get an oxidizing flame, the trick is the knowledge and skill to get YOUR SETUP to produce that oxidizing flame with the fuel that you are using. Each setup has many variables, so I cannot describe all the combinations and limitations.

QUESTION! (please please answer lol) Will this work on HDPE? I have a kayak I want to paint but am worried from what I've read so far that nothing will stick to it. Couple questions: You specifically called out propane - why, what's special about propane vs butane or other sources? Will a heat gun work? It seems like the plastic just needs to get hot Also, when you say after it's flame treated and degreased again it's ready to paint, does that mean ready to dip, or ready for a base coat?
