/ bikemanforu Why do you get a flat every time you ride your bike? BikemanforU shows us how to find the answer. Free Shipping on bike parts, tires, tools, and accessories at www.bikemanforu.com In this video tutorial, KZfaq's how to guru of bicycle repair carries out a methodical investigation into the reasons behind one of the most frequently heard questions in the bike shop. 'You know something's wrong and you've checked everything, but have you?' he asks. "Flat Tire That Never Ends" delves into a professional examination that scrutinizes bicycle wheel, tube, and tire. BikemanforU shows us step-by-step instructions for isolating and identifying the causes of repeated tire failure. He starts with the wheel, explaining the difference between double-wall and single-wall rims. He cautions us to make sure the cloth rim tape or rim strip is wide enough to cover spoke nipples or smidgeons of air that might create problems for the tube. When he moves onto the tube, he cautious us to use extra care around the valve. We learn how to mark space around potential problems, and how to scrutinize the outside and inside of the tire for minute debris or holes. Now you can fix that flat once and for all. Subscribing is free, so please sign up to get the newest episodes of our our interactive show on how to fix and maintain your bicycle. bit.ly/YgmOsp

Thanks Bikeman! I had three flats and after watching this video found out it was the rim tape shifting and exposing the spoke holes.

Thanks for the "Hip Pocket Training Class"! I never worried about flat tires while riding the trails in Northern Virginia because I used Spinskins Kevlar liners. Fast forward many years I haven't experienced as many flat tires in my life in Northwest Florida! I finally purchased the brown Rhinodillo tire liners for my bicycle - I pray to God they decrease the frequency of flat tires. I miss riding my bicycle and I want to ride it where I like.

outstanding. I took my old Swinn bike to my local bike shop for a flat repair 4 times (they did not charge me). I would ride my bike once and was flat the next day. The younger inexperienced bike people worked on my bike. I told them the problem was the rim because the bike is quite old. No one listened. So I purchased a new bike. I wish I had Google you a year ago.

From my experience with this problem on motorcycles and bicycles is check that you have the right size inner tube, I`ve brought inner tubes on eBay and the size was so out that I could pass my hand and wrist when inflated between the tube and the wheel, When I got another proper size one from a local shop you could tell straight away the size difference, What getting a over sized inner tube does is vastly increases the chance of a pinch puncture where it folds on itself under pressure, As with rim tapes don`t bother with them, They are near useless, Cut the outside of the old inner tube all the way round and use that as a rim tape

Filming is getting better and better. Love these back to basics videos. How about one about 'bad habits' that people get into when they first start cycling but haven't been shown the proper way. Like how to use a quick release properly, or how to adjust modern cantilever brakes, or how to fit your bicycle properly? I think those kinds of videos would work great with your new camera skills and they're the kind of thing that will be useful to people for a long time to come..

I had a tiny little piece of wire (smaller that a staple!) that was causing me all kinds of grief. It was right in the middle of the tread portion. Couldn't believe that something so tiny could poke through a new tire like that. It was a stock tire that came with the bike, but was only a couple of months old (Less than a hundred miles!). I did get that piece of wire out of the tire. It was less than a quarter inch long and about the size of a #28 gauge wire....Tiny! I just can't trust a tire that punctures that easily, so I ended up picking up a new pair of tires, tubes and strips at the local bike shop. I should have made a video of it, but I just wanted to get it fixed so I could get out and ride.

This happens to me all the time. Shards of fine steel wire with ends that are as sharp as a hypodermic needle which will puncture a bike tire as easily as the syringe that goes in to your skin for a flu shot. I'm pretty sure they are shed by badly neglected vehicles with bad tires and fan belts (they have steel cables embedded within the rubber). I'm not aware of any viable countermeasures other than the solid foam rubber tire inserts that take the place of an inner tube, but they are available only for a few tire sizes.

Well if you think about the moment you roll onto that piece of wire and repetitive rotations between a high pressure balloon and asphalt it’s eventually going to dig into the tire.

That type of tiny very fine wire can pierce and puncture almost any tire .... being so fine it is extremely sharp. It can pierce your finger simply by touching it, to get the idea.

also a good idea to feel inside the tyre in that suspect area the stone/thorn or glass may not be visible but feeling gently with fingers will discover it, I had a single hole but two thorns, the tyre went flat before the second made a hole but i discovered it and prevented what would have been an immediate re puncture

I have a mountain bike with full suspension. The bike seems to be so heavy and I know that the tire is the cause of it. The tire size mark is 27.5 x 2. I want to change the tire with a smaller width that has smoother thread. I am asking an opinion using the same rims for this matter so my bike won't look out of proportion. I stay in San Francisco California and the bike is used only here in the city with a slight chance of going off-road. Bike Man your help is a wonder and I appreciate the help as others do.

Yesterday I brought my wheelset to a vulcanizing shop and by close observation I noticed that my improvised rim tape that came from an old tube has TWO holes in it. Straight in the spoke holes. And I had lose air twice! So maybe I should have my rim tape replaced by a real rim tape! Thank you for this very helpful video, bikeman!

One other thing to look for is spoke tightness and whether or not the spoke pokes up through the spoke nut. If you constantly get damaged tube around the valve stem try polishing any sharp edges with a file or dremel tool to round the sharp edges. Any sharp edges or burs around the rim can be dremeled or filed smooth.

Bike man is right once again, you didn't check everything. Its either the tire the tube or the rim. Once you figure it out most likely you may never get a flat tire again. One of my bikes 9 years not a single flat. Although some tires are just prone to punctures. One of my bikes has Maxxis tires. These tires are so good that I accept that once in awhile I'm going to get a flat. It's a trade-off. On the flip side Panaracer never get flats ever.

Bikeman, I still got a flat tire on my road bike. The tire on it requires 90 PSI, but I previously stated in a comment that the rim will only physically hold 75 PSI. I pumped it up to 75/70 PSI but still got a flat tire. I've given up and have not tried to fix it. One time I did pump the tire up to 90 PSI, which was recommended on the tire, and it was good. But when I went over a bump the tube blew out. Please Help.

Also put air in the popped tubed to see where it is leaking from if it's from the bottom of the tube check your rim strip. From the top of the tube probably a thorn or something and make sure you try and find it in the tire. Just makes your investigation easier

hey bikeman another way to find out if something is sticking through the tire and popping the tube and you've already checked the rim you can use a cotton ball and run it all throughout the tire and if anything is sticking through cotton will get stuck on it and leave just a little bit there and there's where the thorne or glass or whatever is sticking through.

Don't tighten the nut on the outside down so much. Its just there to hold the stem in place when you go to fill it and put pressure on it, not secure it to the rim. I find that's a common theme with Presta valves tires when they pop in that area. People crank down on that nut too much thinking it needs to be really tight. Not the case.

It also could be the area for which a person is cycling ...even-though(by law) a cyclist is permitted to use an entire lane if they choose, many cyclist believe in sharing the road, thus they ride towards the far edge. And the further one gets to the edge, that's where all the shrapnel(nails, screws, broken glass, etc.) ends up, that falls off trucks & discarded by litter bugs.

Can we put - inside - an additional rubber strip or may be two additional rubber strips to protect the tube more from sharp objects? Can we put a layer or two rubber strips not on the rim only, but also on the inside side of the tire itself glued to it? I mean is there a practical idea about that that might be useful?

+j.j Cagney There is a brand of tyretapes that you can buy which are meant to protect the tubes from punctures, and they have different ones for different bikes. On some of their products, they'll use literal solid plastic to stop just about anything from puncturing your tyres. Have that with some TubeSlime as a double-whammy and you're practically puncture-proof. Or, yah know, you could always get solid rubber tyres with no need for air... :3

+j.j Cagney If it's a mountain bike, you can get tire liners. I think the ones I got at the bike shop were Tuffy brand. Haven't got a flat since I put them in. Damn thorns were a hassle. There are also Kevlar lined tires. I haven't tried the Kevlar, but Kevlar + Tuffy liners should be darn near bulletproof.

lucidbarrier I can't say anything for these liners, but my racer has some Schwalbe Lugano Kevlar Guard tyres, not had a flat in two years, yet used to get them every couple weeks!

YoloMcSwaggins That's good to know. One day I will try the Kevlar out, when I run these tires down.

A guy named bikemanforU in an earlier vid recommended VELOX tape - but what width for a mid-1990s MTB Trek w/ orig 26-inch wheels? I'm getting suggestions that 17mm is for road rims, while 22 is for MTB---and then a third guy is telling me 17 width is fine b/c it only has to cover the holes (in a double-walled MTB rim) Am trying to buy this before I UN-tire the whl... Thx if you can clarify! U da man --- da bike man of course... Side question: In Paris, do they call you LeBikeManPourVous?

+ForbinColossus Measure, rim widths and tape both vary and need to match up. Velox is pricy but reliable Most anything will work, but better solutions fit predictably ,stick , don't leave residue or shift . Thanks for the reminders BMan, small rim of spoke hole from shifting narrow rubber tape was getting me. Dans Parsi c'est Le Fou de Long Isle

hey, for my 28" (700c) double wall high rims, is a 14mm width 8 bar rimstrip ok? Because my anvelopes are 10bar 23-700c, does the rimstrip need to be 10 bar also and larger in width? Ty!

+Christian Vogt Ill tell you, here where im at, the tires marked 28" don't fit my 700, they are bigger. I also have a 27" and a 28" and none of them are interchangeable...

There are 4 different 700-Rim/Tires: 700-A = 642mm 700-B = 635mm 700-C = 622mm 700-D = 587mm I know it is pretty confusing, the letter is the important thing on this

+Christian Vogt I use 700c and those won't fit on my old 28", tyres are physically a different diameter.

I got multiple flats. I found a sliver of metal inside the tire on my 3rd time rubbing the inside of the rubber. It was tiny, but I found that sucker. :)

Frequent flat syndrome is horrible and embarrassing. I've stopped ferrying the thing into the bike shop 'cause all they do is repair it, say there's nothing wrong, and then I have another flat in a day or two. I feel like a hypochondriac ! Tried repairing it myself but watched a video that didn't to tell me to make sure the tube isn't pinched when I replace it. BOOM! My ears rang for a while after that. Maybe this time. I'm not giving up.

+Alienart put some air in it (the new tube), just a lil bit after you pop the valve stem of the tube into the rim of the wheel, it will make getting the tire on easier over it, and seat it.

I started cycling almost two years ago, at first I used to pay for getting flats done, then I thought stuff it, I'm going to learn how to do this....and I've got to say, it is so easy. 1) Get the tools and bits and bobs you need...also,correct size tubes for your tires is important - I used to get so many flats as my tubes were larger than they needed to be. 2) Spend an afternoon in your garden removing the wheel and tube, putting it back together. Then do it again. And again. 3) Do it one last time, but this time, do it knowing you'll be looking back and laughing at 'those times I never knew how to change a flat'... That's where I am now. Ride safe. :-)
