I'm surprised so many people dislike Thunderball, personally, I think it's a great film, Connery is fantastic as Bond, the rest of the cast is terrific, the locations are beautiful, the underwater battle is classic Bond; having said that I do prefer the novel.

I hear so many people complain about the underwater scenes. I don't think they realize that this was a big first for movies. This was also the era of Jacques Cousteau and we were just discovering what Fleming knew in the 50's. The underwater shots were not that long and do not slow the story at all. The big battle scene at the end is critical to the story.
@pczTV

@@michaelpoplawski2998 Cousteau is why I learned to scuba dive a third of a century ago. And, you are totally correct that for it’s time, this was mind blowing filmography. I just find my attention span is a wee bit shorter now and we are so used to underwater photography that the impact on the audience is diminished. We’re I to edit it, it would not be as long but it would keep the crucial elements. But again, this is my favorite bond and the one I watch more than any other. So this critique comes from a place of love.

Having just re read Thunderball in a print version and seen the movie recently and although just bought a pink linen shirt from Turnbull & Asser my personal preference is the book! it is amazing and I found it was hard to put down even though I know the story well. The description of England and the English is from the point of view of wealthy rich person as Fleming was brought up in his very wealthy family is so well done. People know cashmere well, but how many people know and recognize vicuna when they see it? He also reveals things in such an low key way that is not meant to be showy. Reading an on line version is not like picking up a book and reading it all cover to cover. I found the on line version did not mention the dedication to Ernest Cuneo Muse. To learn about his relationship with Cuneo tells you a lot about the reason for the other Thunderball movie, Never say never again. Never say never again had some difficulties for most of us, but Fatima Blush, Barbara Carrera was my favorite Bond woman off all the movies she was so outstanding in that movie.

'Thunderball' isn't a Bond film made for someone like me. After listening to Joseph and Scott's discussion of 'Dr. NO.', I gave it another try and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it and could appreciate it on the terms Joseph highlighted. But 'Thunderball', despite its impressive production values, classic Bond plot and innovative underwater camerawork and choreography is a film I can never really warm to. It's so long since I read Fleming's novel that I can't comment, beyond appreciating that I have the chance to enjoy and benefit from your discussion.

WHY I CONSIDER THUNDERBALL THE BEST CLASSIC BOND FILM:: In Dr No, Connery is still experimenting with the role and he is great but yet a bit stiff. In From Russia with Love he explores more the "dark" side of the character. In Goldfinger he adds more charm and "witticism" and completes the formula. But in Thunderball he IS James Bond and the formula is perfected. Connery's performance on this is truly unique. He shows the greatest confidence ever. His style, his movements, the way he speaks, his one-liners, his demeanor and even the way he looks, everything that was built in the previous 3 films, reach perfection. He is "dark" and gritty and at the same time charming and stylish. He looks tough and ruthless which at the same time combines with incredible humor and unsurpassed style. And he obviously enjoys playing the character more than ever, either before or after. It is also the ultimate "escapism" movie. Beautiful exotic places, wonderful scenery and landscapes, incomparable lifestyle, amazing women (Fiona Volpe is an amazing femme fatale and Domino one of the hottest Bondgirls). it is even considered alongside with Goldfinger a "fashion icon" movie! The plot is simple but realistically believable. And for the first time it focuses on Bond himself and not the vilain. The action scenes are great. The gadjets are believable (the jet-pack was real in the beginning). And whatever you say, the underwater shooting and especially the underwater battle was a revolutionary achievement for the time and a unique sample of cinematography for 1965! So initially in Goldfinger but mainly in Thunderball, Connery reaches the fine line of perfection, as he becomes at the same time tough and refined, stylish and ruthless, a real killer with a sense of humor, who lives on the edge and therefore enjoys every minute of his life as if it were his last. Goldfinger at 85% and Thunderball at 100%, are the timeless epitome of the James Bond movies, before Connery got tired of the role in You Only Live Twice and before the production turned to a more comic version (parody-spoof) of Bond, with Diamonds Are Forever and the Roger Moore era. Also Thunderball is also historically extremely significant for the franchise that we love: It broke the smashing box office records. It is to this date the highest grossing Bond movie of all time (inflation counted). If Goldifinger created the "Bondmania", then Thunderball made it into a high fever. The flms remarkable achievements transformed James Bond from a popular fictional hero, into a phenomenon in cinema history

I think comparing a movie to a novel is a little bit like comparing a plane with a car. Different category. But ok, I think the movie is much better than the book (which is still a good read). The screenwriters did a good job of improving many scenes from the book. The underwater scenes in the movie are brilliant for me. And yeah..... One possible explanation for Largo's being unfazed and "cool as a cucumber" while the embezzler is electrocuted (aside form just being badass, of course) is that, as Number2 of SPECTRE, Blofeld's second in command and chosen successor, he was in on it and knew exactly what was going to happen.

Great chat. I do love these book v film comparisons with two commentators. two opinions and the dance of shifting favourites is interesting to watch. Whilst the older films are now slow, for many in the modern audience, the styling and real world scenes and locations rarely visited by the audience made Bonds world a wonderful, if dangerous place. A place we would like to visit but with the assurity of returning home safely, in both film and book versions.

Intresting discussion guys! I’ve actually just finished reading thunderball for the first time and, though this might be through my own inattentiveness, I never got the message that Bond was ‘down and out’ at the beginning of the novel. Whether or not people like the Thunderball movie seems to revolve mainly around how the individual feels about scenes set underwater as that appears to be the main issue people bring up when hating on the movie "They slow down the pace of the film." They go on for too long" etc. I personally love underwater scenes. For me they don't go on long enough. I love the crisp underwater photography and I appreciate that underwater battle far more than say the volcano battle in You Only Live Twice because of the intricacies of photographing and choreographing so many divers under the water at the same time. I agree that It's an achievement that is often under appreciated. Such a complicated action scene has never been replicated in any other movie since. It isn't an underwater fight between a couple of divers. It is a full scale battle of epic proportions. This was the first Bond movie that truly felt of epic scale and I love it. I love the underwater stuff and for me this is easily my favourite of the Connery Bond films.

I don't believe the underwater scenes drag the film down either. The film's major problem is the stuff on dry land once it arrives in the Bahamas. Bond simply isn't given a hell of a lot to do and what also didn't help is Largo is such a bland villain. Outside of Bond, Fiona Valope is the one carrying the film.

I love the movie. But both the film and the movie has to solve a story problem: SPECTREs plan is too good. Coincidences are needed to thwart it. Big coincidences. And the solution is to spot the plane from a helicopter. That is the simple main plot point that settles the case and it becomes a military operation. All the other stuff is added on. Much like FRWL. But I do love this movie for all the great scenes and locations.

Open the first page of the novel and you will read...." based on a film script by Kevin McClory , Jack Whittingham and Ian Flemming......

The film is about 30 minutes too long. There are serious editing changes that could have been made. Continuity errors as well, dubbing out time, and an over the top speeded up boat sequence. For the first 90 minutes, the film is TOP entertainment, but the last 30-40 minutes are disappointing. Also the opening sequence is poor. It really needed a script closer to the book.

I absolutely love the novel. It really reads like a Dalton-like spy thriller with detective elements but I could never bring myself to like the film as much I want to. It's just so poorly paced, dull and boring compared to the rest of the 1960s Bond films in my opinion.

WHY I CONSIDER THUNDERBALL THE BEST BOND MOVIE: In Dr No, Connery is still experimenting with the role and he is great but yet a bit stiff. Definitely. Recently watched all the Bond films. Thunderball is the only one I did not like. Slow, boring, just didn't like but, but that is my opinion. Never Say Never Again was honestly better! Just more action and a fun film.

The movie is light years better than the book, which is only marginally--and, baby, I mean marginally--better than any of the other crap Fleming wrote. And that was only because the book was a novelization of a script on which he was working with two other people. The rest of his oeuvre is unreadable. I had to force myself to finish reading Casino Royale and Dr. No and I couldn't choke down anything past the fourth chapter of Moonraker. How Fleming convinced movie producers to take a chance on such poorly written material, I'll never know.

Thunderball is one of my worst Bond films. Dull, boring, slow paced and claustrophobic. No contest, the novel is better… and even the novel itself is pretty week.

@@DavyDredd14 No denying it, but it is a dull film. Besides if you want a 007 epic, watch The Spy Who Loved Me.

Agreed. I think the atmosphere was well crafted but the film is a slog to get through.
