Join us as we discuss Ian Fleming's novel THUNDERBALL as a part of #flemingreadingchallenge ! Grab a drink and a comfortable chair as we chat, in Book Club style, about our opinions on the plot, prose, and influence this book has on the franchise and on all of us. Special guests Joe Darlington from Being James Bond, and accomplished author Roland Hulme join in on all the underwater fun!

David does such a good job of extemporaneously speaking! He probably has some notes and points to get to but it all feels very organic and flowing. I'm really enjoying this review.

Reading 007 novels are an absolute joy. I really enjoyed From Russia With Love and Casino Royale. I recently read Forever and a Day by Anthony Horowitz. I would like to see this novel being adapted for a movie.

I read all the Fleming Bond books when I was in junior high and I haven't read them since. Possibly I'll get new copies and re-read them as it's been 37 years. I enjoy the videos!

Just finished Thunderball the novel. Great video! Hearing the hopeful comments about the Amazon acquisition over 2 years ago and knowing that NOTHING has happened yet in the Bond 26 production is sad.

Great job guys. Also, fantastic to hear that a third Anthony Horowitz Bond novel will be released in 2022! I loved 'Forever and a Day' and 'Trigger Mortis'.

Gregory peck as bond, Cary Grant as Largo, James Spader as Blofeld, Ana de Armas as Domino, James Stewart as Felix Leiter, Christopher Plummer as M, Grace Kelly as Moneypenny.

Discovered your channel from your cross-over debates with Calvin Dyson. Have very much enjoyed your take on the Bond franchise and your eye for details in the films that I had never registered, or properly processed. Keep up the good work and keep enjoying yourself while doing so.

I’ve often competed Blofeld to Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes books. He is first only mentioned in the Red-headed league then appeared in The Finale Problem / The Empty House & The Valley of Fear in flashback adventures. Witch in turn was the inspiration for The Master from Doctor Who. I 🖤 all that “dark reflection” stuff. Fiona Volpe reminds me of those classic comic Femm-Fatals like Black-Widow. How about Benedict Cumberbatch as Bond?? Clancy Brown was the voice of Lex Luthor in the Super-Man animated series. Clint Eastwood as Felix Hmmm fantastic review guys & thanks again 💥💥🔫

Fleming knew of the occult and there's an esoteric side to Bond stories. The numbers appearing in the story world be part of that

When I watch the movie there are many things that I assume were explained in dialogue or on the screen. But frequently discovered that they were only in the book. Having read the book makes the movie a better experience

43:11 not only is piratical a word, but Ian Fleming is often credited with inventing it. I don't know if that's actually true, but he certainly used it in Casino Royale when describing the scar on Bond's cheek.

Maybe Amazon will get us back to a new film every two years. Like the Connery and Moore eras.

As big a productions as they are, every two years probably won't happen. I don't even know if every two years is a good idea like it was years ago. Do you think it would still work?

@@andyheller2691 I feel that the writing, casting, and location teams can be working on the next film during the post production and release of the last film. Also the budgets have gotten too high for maximum profitability and can be tempered a bit without losing the quality of the files. Maybe enhancing them.

David has said a few times lately that Bond is an anti-hero. I don't agree with that. I see those as characters such as Eastwood's MAN WITH NO NAME or Wolverine in XMEN. Bond has his vices, but he's definitely out to do good.

I agree. Maybe Timothy Dalton in Licence to Kill, but otherwise, he is not an anti-hero by job description and his dedication to it.

He’s a hero but not a clean cut hero or as you said an anti hero he’s in the middle

@@mohammedashian8094 in today's world how many people are 'clean cut ' anyway. even in the 60s it was more a veneer of respectability than a reality. "But Bond sleeps around!" yea lots of guys did , while married too.

@@eabcool the “sleeping around” I’ve always thought in the movies was because of the sexual revolution where he was with multiple women in one movie of which I’ve grown to dislike after reading Fleming. the novels on the other hand while he does sleep but it’s usually only one woman. The best way I can describe it is the bond of the novels represented the conservatism of the 50s (which that’s who he essentially is more of conservative civil servant) while the movies represented the rebelliousness of the 60s

I'm sorry I missed the discussion. I haven't read Thunderball, so I'm going to watch it now. The only James Bond novels that I've read are Goldfinger (Pussy Galore is a lesbian?) and The Spy Who Loved Me (I don't care what anyone else says, this is a horrible book. Even Ian Fleming thought so). Will you be discussing the Bond short stories as well? I certainly hope so.

The Felix Leiter could pass as Don Johnson Sr. There was so much Miami Vice/ Bahamas to him

Im actually a big reader i would a chapter of books each and every day, like a chapter every day, im not theodore roosevelt yet with the books, but im reading all the bond continuation novels, im reading them in order it came out so im at Brokenclaw, and i thought the author wasnt that great in his run of books like i remember one of his books had an exoricst subplot, im like how is this bond, but some stuff are bond so decisive for me. Im reading old school spy books like our man in havana and that authors other books , and wants to finish john le carre biblio at some point, and im almost there. I share the same birthday as fleming so that is kind of cool, being an influential writer of mine, and brosnan shares the same month as well, also i think blowfelds birthday is also may 28th. I also read the bond comics and other media, im reading the comic books from sweden and there all the comics with sean connery as all of ian flemings stories so that is king of cool. I loved thunderball books, alot of health stuff for sure, i wish i could have been but i couldnt, but the movie and the book is similar in many ways so that is great. Im also reading the indiana jones continuation novels as well, and i wish they have the movie novel adaptations of craigs run, i think they will make those better. Is being james bond doing bond stuff on patreon and not youtube anymore or whats the deal with that i miss the game night?

It would make sense because Felix is a Texan but we never had a Texan actor playing Felix but also could him a well known name kinda overshadowed the performance?

Although Thunderball was Met with mixed reviews, both novel and screen treatments, I was quite mesmerized by Thunderball. My first exposure was the movie version and years later In high school, I read the novel and still enjoyed this as well!!
