Be pro-active with flipping raw cards. You are over-thinking and under performing because of it. Flipping is not dead at all imo. I have tripled value on multiple raw cards lately, just shopping the deals, and being there at the right time with auctions, then selling for Buy it now, or in person....

flipping sports cards is not going to be attractive for people who just want to buy and sell without doing research. To continue to flip and make money will require more research and time because you have to be more selective and pick the low price cards but that requires a lot of time and patience. That small window where it was easy to buy and sell is gone. This isn't about money but more about time. People want to make money and spend as little time as possible doing it. It involves watching various sports and looking at who is selling low who could spike up. For example, you had to buy Jordan Poole early in order to flip him. But you gotta be watching the sport to know that.

Unfortunately about 8 months later and just under 8 months into 2022 the resale values on singles have done nothing but continue to drop. I'd say any chance of a bounce back is extremely low at least at this point through the next 2ish years. For the last 6-8 months the % drop in value for low-end, mid-end, and ESPECIALLY HIGH-END singles gets worse and worse each month. The data isn't a result of cherry picking the lowest sales or anything like that either. A lot of guys who blew tons of $ are in a panic as they sell their singles cheaper and cheaper as time goes on. If anything at best it might be smart to really be patient and spend a lot of time searching for SP and SSP rookies who seem to be priced at a steal even with the knowledge of how down the market has gotten. Buy them raw and wait for a few years seems to be the only option with any upside result in coming years.

Hey Brad! Not so sure I agree. Flipping has def gotten tougher. But you can make the same grading plays you just have to buy higher end cards. But the plays are still there. Its more capital. But the margins still make sense. You just gotta do the math first. Because the card is back in 2 weeks you actually don't have to worry so much about market fluctuation. It's more expensive, but higher nominal $$ return too. It's just more work and more capital intensive.

@@Showcardsusa I look for cards where a PSA 9 is going to cover most of the grading cost. Typically cards that are $350+ work better. I do hockey... @@lapp3r30shockeycardflips I totally agree with how you go about it regarding making sure if you get a PSA 9 you're still making some profit. That's the advice I give all of those who grade with me, especially of course the newbies. Most expect 10s and think 9s are a loss, which is obviously not how it works. 2020 card industry was a one time perfect storm. Combine Kobe's death, a pandemic, last dance. Flipping is not dead in 2021 but the gravy train is gone. Flippers have to be more creative, hard working and be willing to experiment with new web sites, grading companies and actually going outside of their homes to a card show to sell product. Flipping any card is dead as it should be. Flipping specific cards has always been part of the hobby. That’s why it’s a hobby and not a full-time job. I’m sitting on some rookie Zion’s I got cheap. It may take 3-4 years before these cards possibly appreciate and I can flip them. Or his body won’t hold up and he’ll be a bust. Again, that’s why this is a hobby to me as Zion’s career has no effect on my financial future.

Well said. If you want to make a living selling sports cards, you better give yourself a minimum of 10 hours a day 7 days a week uploading inventory, shipping, sorting and keeping financial records. Its like any business, you have to be married to it for a decade before you start seeing comfortable profits. The early years in any business is a ton of time and a lot of seeing red in your year end accounting. The most valuable asset we have is our time.

Good thoughtful comment. Being a long term collector (I was at the 1990 National in Dallas) what basically happened last year was raising the FLOOR of long term value for most non-modern cards. In the history of collecting and selling baseball cards the return is slow and steady. All these "prizim-flipping" valuations will be canceled out, but it still leaves a better floor for us who hold stable low pop count desirable cards. I always thought those who took advantage of last year then moved that $ into vintage are the ones who made the best decisions.

Thanks for shedding light on this. I believe sports cards have become long term wealth building alternative investment classes and not as much of a quick fix. Yes, you can sell and make profit off your cards in a short amount of time. But it's hard to create stability now in the short term (which is a good thing). Then you can actually buy cards that are valuable and create true investing strategies behind your buys. Then you'll weed out the people in the process who aren't in it for the true love of the hobby. Great video as always!

Great video! I think the one thing I’ve noticed a ton (at least in the FL market) that’s overlooked here is the rise of SGC. High-end quick flippers are still grading with PSA, as the raw cards they’re buying justify the grading fees. But the low-end quick flippers are starting to grade with SGC. I’ve seen a lot of tables at shows with only SGC slabs. They definitely established themselves as the clear-cut 3rd best grader in the hobby in 2021 with low prices, quick turn around times, and decent looking slabs. Curious to see how that evolves in 2022

The juices of flipping to 2x, 3x and 4x are long gone. This hobby had so many factors that are going against it. Grading fees, taxes, online platform fees, high hobby and retail boxes prices, scams and fakes are killing the hobby. Just invest in forex, stock market and bitcoin. You only have to pay taxes and maybe commission fees. That is it.

I think the hobby will be hurting for years to come ~ I see the public speculating on far less wax and the producers will see their profits tumble vs. the last 5 years.... Costs 15% in fees to sell on ebay or just about any platform. You also have to factor in time. It's a hobby. People need to treat it this way. Too many trying to make profits and not realizing a hobby is for enjoyment. Most of those who make a living selling sports cards have been in the industry since the 80's and have been through the ups and downs and built a thick foundation in the hobby.

thanks for clarifying, Daniel. The point is that if you can make 15% on something guaranteed, that's great. However, if 15%-25% is the high end and doesn't account for cards that will lose you money, that's when it doesn't make sense. Congrats, Verna!

I truthfully just find most of the subjects discussed completely subjective, UFC cards have seen an inflationary run on singles and wax that mimicks the 19-20 NBA season. Khamzat Chimaev /99 sold oct,9 53.00 latest comp as of last night was 428.00! 1 no name victory in the time frame. Same goes for islam, and ufc TC wax over 200.00 for 1 blaster. Second thing, mosiac IS a sought after set, I onow you throw alot of shade at it but mosaic was successful and is still will be sought after. NBA is falling out from over inflationary trends with less class appeal, with mac jones doing his thing modern NFL is still safe.

hey Grungeman17. yes, I'm looking at the same major sports as when I started. I know F1 had its moment as well. As for Mosaic, I don't know anyone who values it highly. Personally, I like the look and the parallels, I just haven't seen the sales justify people respecting it that much.

I don't see any market developing into something sustainable as long as selling fees are that high. The transaction fees need to come down to about 2% otherwise its death by attrition to the hobby.
@TheComebackCardInvestor

Thanks Karl. For raw cards getting graded, the 14% fee isn't that bad if you're making 100% on the card, but for a smaller margin, it's brutal
@Aut0KAD

@@TheComebackCardInvestor I am trying to look at it in the context of a sustainable market. in a sustainable market, people need to be buying and selling at fair prices (on average). sure there are deals either way, but the market can't sustain itself if either buyers or sellers are getting ripped off for the most part. if true, a 100$ fair market card will either have to sell at a 14% discount, or the next buyer will need to be 14% in the hole on day 1 of the purchase of 114$. We haven't discussed sales tax, I pay 10% sales tax, so I am 25% in the hole on a fair market value card. It's impossible for a real trading market to develop with these kinds of losses. Can you imagine if the stock market traded that way?
