The Flo Fx shower drain is a new bonding flange drain for tiled shower pans. I have done a review and some testing on it, and I really like the features. What sets this drain kit apart is its rugged durability, the mechanical bonding feature on the bottom of the flange, the anti-wicking fabric on the top, and the beautiful finishes that the drain grates come in. We like this flo fx tile drain so much that we are now stocking them for use on all of our future showers. If you would like to purchase one, you can go to www.tilecoach.com and purchase the bonding flange and separate grate kit.
In this how to tutorial tile video, I show how to install the flo fx drain on an actual job using a mortar bed. For the mortar bed, we use dry pack or deck mud mortar to slope the base of the shower pan so that the waterproof membrane can go on top.
For the video on how to waterproof the surface: • WATERPROOF MEMBRANE fo...

Thank you Coach for all your videos and the direction they contain!! With your incredible assistance I tackled a Kitchen backsplash. 360 square feet of 6x35 wood look floor tile. A new guest bath surround with 4x 6 subway tile and as of yesterday, finished the master bath shower with 8x16 tile. The 36x36 master shower included the Kerdi membrane, Kerdi corner bench, Kerdi niche and your mud deck technique. I totally get why you tile guys get paid what you get paid. Looks simple from up high but once you get down in the weeds, oh boy!! Your videos inspired me to tackle these progects and in the process I found out a lot about myself. I found out that Squaring a 1916 bathroom caused my cussing vocabulary to resurface so quickly. I also know that paying attention to detail in tile work, such as making sure your floor is flat and that walls are square really paid off when it came to setting the tile!! I have to say agian, making sure everything is square is probably what your videos prepared me for the most when it came to the actual work. I also have to say though, the very most most improtant lesson I came to acknowledge in this journey, is that I now know that this 60 year old body is not cut out for what you guys do on a day to day. This is definitly a young man's sport and I consider myself in pretty good shape!! Anyway, the wife is happy, I did not get injured in the process too bad and I feel good about my work. I can promise you this.......our new house we are planning now.......I will have the tile work and flooring contracted!! Thank you again for the push to take this adventure and saving us a couple bucks in the process. Keep up the unbiased videos for us DIYers and keep tiling on with the no compromised hard work that you do!!

Flo fx drain works very well. I ordered 1 from your website 1-2 yrs ago. There was a mix-up with shipping, and you drove it to my project. I've learned a lot about products, fail / no fail from your youtube channel. You provide a great service and teaching even for someone like me who thinks they know it all after 10 yrs doing remodels. I appreciate what you do. Side note; I haven't seen all of your videos, so I don't know for sure, but i've never seen you do any comparisons on foam board vs concrete board. I have seen you waterproof concrete fiber board and strengthen all the joints like I do with foam board. It's much easier to work with for me. Your thoughts?

I used this on my shower pan installation. Very cool, and it's heavy-duty. It makes it easy to align the tile without any little pieces on the sides. The only thing I didn't like was that the surface area to connect the adapter to the main drain flange was a little short. I think this is to allow more flexibility in making it level, but I'd prefer more surface area, especially because it was a little loose, too. Everything else was perfect. It's really, really secured well into the mortar bed, and the lip for waterproofing is nice and wide.

Isaac, very nice and thorough videos. I have a customer with a 14 year old shower. I live in the Midwest. The customers shower, I did not install, failed. It is a second floor massive walk in with full built in bench on the long side. I did a water test and it doesn't hold. Tearing in and around the drain revealed quite a bit. The weep holes were completely plugged. They used 1 layer of felt and looks like one or two layers of tar for waterproofing. Looks like a make shift hot mop...which is not done in this part of the country. There must be flexion in the floor and drain because the felt was ripped around the collette. Now I need to give the customer some bad news. 5 x 6.5 shower with long built bench, glass wall and jacuzzi on one side. Want to travel near Chicago? Haha

If I’m doing a large shower or sauna, I cut straight 2x4’s or any wood I have on site to make different lengths for screeding. Hardest part about dry pack is mixing and moving the mud. Very labour intensive. I still prefer foam pans and I’ll level the floor first if need be. If you’re doing this for career I suggest saving your body as much as you can.

30 YR OLD STABILA LOL. That's hilarious what are the chances! I also have a 30 year old Stabila. I started setting marble, granite and tile 30 years ago and I still have my original Stabila. I believe it's 28 inches. It's a hair off but still in between the lines. I heard they have a lifetime guarantee for up to a certain percentage off. But I just marked it and still continue using because it's obviously almost perfect being a stabila . I also still have my 30 year old Stabila torpedo level!

Wood Float Guy here. In the Midwest. / MO. My wood float/screed, levels/screed, margin trowel, and finish float is all I use. When the pan is completely finished, I'll burn it in a little with my steel finish float. I want it smooth, but I don't want to bring any unnecessary water to the top. Also with a wood float, you can tamp and shape without digging. Idk how people do it with a finish float only. Seems you couldn't tamp and shape without digging. I digress.... A Mag float works ok too, but nothing like a woody and a mag will bring a bit of unnecessary water to the top. Anyhow...... Pan looks good man. Flo fx Drain looks fantastic. Anxious to get some in stock. Thanks for the content! 💯 Edit: So I should have watched the entire thing before sending off a post. Lol! You do your pan just as I do. Anyhow.... Just wanted to throw that in. Take care!

If I get water coming to the top it means I have too much water and/cement in my mix. I know it can be done, but using a 5 -1 with a half gallon of water per 55lbs will give me perfect mud that water will not "cream up" on the surface no matter what. Thanks for your reply and glad to another pro on here!

I prefer a dry pack pan but the foam bed is interesting. Wonder if applying 1" to 2" of dry pack on top of the foam slope bed would work, a kind of hybrid system? Using the foam to set the slope but then applying a layer of dry pack for strength, kinda the best of both. Youd have to compensate for curb height possibly but shouldnt be a problem. Ive never had issue setting my slope in dry pack but for weekend warriors and DIYers it might be a viable option. About that drain, i currently form a recessed basin around my drain flange about 1.5" deep and about 10" in diameter that i fill with pea gravel, broken tile etc to insure proper drainage should the grout fail. I form the basin in my dry pack then coat with Redgard extending up onto the drains bottom flange giving me a one piece waterproof membrane from top to bottom. Once filled with gravel etc it gives compressive strength to support the tile while allowing a reservoir and good drainage into the drain should water ever get beneath the tile. The drain system you showed doesnt allow for a reservoir basin at all and doesnt appear to do anything fancy with any water that does sneak past the tile. I understand its advantages with install but what about drainage. Does it address this at all and if not could it be used in the capacity i outlined above with the bottom flange mounted in the bottom of a basin? Thanks for your time.

I have a mom who is over 400 lbs and I am going to build her a larger custom shower so she can fit in it comfortably. The prefab shower pans are not wide enough, unless they are way up there on price. I've been watching the foam pans you have been doing, but i'm scared of failure with the weight. Would you stick to old school doing the to layers of concrete for more support? I haven't really seen anyone talking about how well the foam boards hold up on those kind of issues or can you point me to any of your videos that might cover this? Your doing great work thanks.

What did you use for cleavage membrane? How do you install it? Do you lay the membrane down and then chicken wire and staple it? Thanks
