Good Morning :) Happy Father's Day to the Mister. I'm so glad you and the Mister got home safely. Your Buttermilk Basin stitching is beautiful. Snow Village looks great. Welcome to the family, Bear. I use my Brother for all my blanket stitch machine applique and love it. I love the Amethyst Bag . . can't wait to see it finished. You are sooooooooo talented.

Congratulations on the new machine. That new machine should be able to do that top-stitching on your bag. If not I would send it back. Machines today have so many more capabilities. I sold sewing machines for 7 years before I retired. You may need to use a larger needle for the topstitching and I would use a topstitching needle as well. Summer has been weird so far in May the weather has just been different. I figured out as a teenager that gardening was not my thing. Making sure that the yard gets mowed is enough for me. Please tell the Mister happy Father’s Day from us.

I'm using my PQ1500S for the bag. The Bernette will just be for machine applique and taking to classes or quilt meet ups. If I had made it as the pattern was written, I would do the top stitching, but since I added in 6 more layers of fabric, an extra layer of SF101, and the 12 gauge vinyl along with the zipper tape, the other two layers of fabric, one layer of SF101, 2 layers of Peltex and the Soft & Stable... it's too much to ask of a domestic machine for top stitching. The Bernette says it could go through 12 layers of denim, and I believe that, but it's always the vinyl that throws a monkey wrench into my top stitching because I like to use thicker vinyl. Had I graded out the seam and hammered it flat, I might have tried to top stitch, but I didn't take the time to do that and the #5 zipper makes that area so thick that I decided it looked fine as it was. I'm sure I'd get a nice 1/8" topstitch on the outside of the bag, but that bulk on the lining side would give an awful top stitch inside the bag since it is so lumpy. I just passed on doing that and the resulting frustration that I always get from being over ambitious with the bag making. If I had my dream industrial machine, the Juki DNU 1541, I'd totally tackle it. I always sew these types of bags with a Superior Top Stitching needle to start with, since I've learned to just avoid the skipped stitches with the thicker seams. The weather sure has been odd this year, but I've enjoyed the thunder rolling through, even though the pups are NOT fans of it...LOL! I hope you guys have a great Father's Day weekend!

You’ve got me looking really hard at the Quilt Sampler quilt kit at Buttermilk Basin! I’ve not done wool appliqué before, but I do love hand stitching. I think the fabrics you are using for the Amethyst bag are fabulous!! 💜🌸💜

You inspired me to try making the Amethyst Bag...I changed the pocket set up too...I made the bottom pocket out of the exterior fabric and left the elastic off and made a coordinating needle book that attaches to the spot where the elastic was...it's not perfect but I'm happy with it...I think I'll skip the top stitching on the next one...good idea! Perfect bag for the "Seeds of Kindness" blocks! You're such an enabler!

Oh how fun!! Yay! I love the idea of the needlebook instead of the elastic... that's brilliant! I think I'll move the zipper of the vinyl pocket up and make the lining of the slip pocket be the binding for the top part of the zipper tape. I didn't think about combining that edge onto the top pocket until later. I wasn't sure about the mesh, but thought it may be handy to have a stretchy pocket with the perle cotton balls that sometimes come with patterns. I love your plan of using fabric for the pocket instead!

Hi, Linda! I'm pretty much self-taught with sewing. My mom did a lot of sewing and made our clothes when I was little, but I never really paid attention to what she did. One day around 2003 I saw some Christmas dresses sewn up from fabric in the Fabric Department of a Walmart and decided to make them for my daughters. I borrowed my mom's sewing machine and just tried to follow the instructions as best as I could. They turned out pretty good and that was the end of sewing until 2012. I wanted to make my oldest daughter a quilt for her graduation in 2014 and decided I should start "practicing" making quilts. I watched a Missouri Star video on quilting and my sewing just took off from there. I did a lot of Googling and watched KZfaq videos when I had questions and now here we are! 🤣🤭❤️

I’m not a believer in coincidence either. It’s interesting when you really think about things, how many times the good Lord intervenes and takes care of us. There were sure a lot of stories about 9/11 and how people were inspired to do something else. I love your bag. We are getting our minds going about a small getaway. Last night my husband asked me if I wanted to go “meet the lady I watch on the iPad from Wyoming “. I thought that was real thoughtful and was very surprised he even mentioned it as I had said something a couple months ago. I hope you have a great week and productive with your new sewing machine. 🙃

Oh how fun! What a sweet husband! If you are in our area, be sure to let me know! I just had to cancel going to the September Crazy Woman Retreat though, and that made me sad. Josh is stateside and the only month he will have available for me to come visit is in September, so I definitely do not want to miss seeing him then. I'm hoping to be able to go next year now!
