Thanks Hank, I love to hear that. I also have friends into "really buggy" flies. I like to go sparse because of the silhouette just like you mentioned. I didn't start brushing out the abdomen until a few years ago but after seeing someone else do it I liked it a lot. I think that makes a really big difference in the profile and allows for the fibers to imitate gills and legs without having to build up a "ball of lint" (haha). Tight lines!

Agree with you that tying sparse is important - putting 5 wraps of hackle on a fly that represents a 6 legged insect doesn't make much sense to me. I tie two types of flies... "named patterns" for learning tying techniques (I usually give these away) and my own flies designed to imitate/fish/swim like the forage in my waters. I always tank-test my patterns checking for balance, profile, movement, translucency/opaqueness and color... in that order of precedence. I keep my materials to a minimum, if a material isn't making a positive contribution to a fly then it is not added - the KISS principle for sure. Best example (and favorite fly) is a simple soft hackle: a thin (tight) grey hares ear abdomen (very slightly "buggy" :-) ) with a 2 wraps of partridge as hackle then a small peacock herl thorax. For a tiny bit of flash and weight I put a glass, brass or tungsten bead in between the abdomen and the hackle. A three minute tie and devastating on fish. Snowing like heck here :-( anxiously waiting for open water. Cheers, Hank

The trout here are mainy browns and rainbows, and their average size is about 1-2lbs where I fish. They get much bigger than that in larger rivers. I fish in eastern Victoria in the south part of Aus, it;s a beautiful place to fish. I just bought some materials and have tied a few of your patterns, can't wait to get out and fish now!

Haha. I received a request for this exact pattern from a friend who teaches a fly tying class at a local university. It's quite the variation, but it does fish quite well.

Couldn't agree more. This style I like to drop below a small dry for subtle presentations but when the water is deep or fast, put a tungsten bead on it and it's a killer!

It's one of those first flies you learn and one of the flies you still fish. Learning variations makes it more fun, but the basic concepts of this fly work so well.
