A 30" span oldtimer designed by Herb Spatz in 1938. Good wing area, huge prop, so it's not surprising that it already appears to be a great flyer, though it's still in the early stages of trimming. It didn't need any nose or tail weight; I just added a little positive incidence to the wing. Really nice looking and nice flying plane, excellent design! Notes on building the plane are here: www.hippocketaeronautics.com/h...
Here's a nice flying video: • Sky Gull oldtime rubbe...

Thank you. Ah the Sparky, really nice plane, I have a short kit from Bob Holman, will build it sooner or later. A closely related plane is the Comet Pepper, you might want to check out those videos, also flies great. I've always found rubber power to be fascinating!

Im with you on the stiff landing gear, ive lately been not securing my gear, basically bracing it where it sits in the fusilage, but able to move, and be removed, but then supported by a dowel to the front and rear of the wire gear, wrapped with rubber bands to float it in the middle. Now the landing gear is free to move to the front or the rear, basically acting as shock absobers. It really works well and my planes that have this set up land like a plane should, and not topple over, ripping the landing gear off.

Cool looking kit. "Back in the Day," I built a "Comet Sparky" - like plane with a strengthened Fuselage for a heavier motor, & a Comet P-38 wing that I swept back the leading edge. The landing gear, I moved the mount forward, & swept the gear legs back. Has much more "Give" to it & does way fewer Nose-overs. Great flier.

As usual, I love your videos. One thing that I'm having trouble with is the propeller assembly. Do you have a graphic where I can see how to build such freewheel assembly. Thanks!
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I don't have any freewheel graphics handy, I'd do a search over at hippocket aeronautics, I know freewheel diagrams have been posted there. I show exactly how I do my freewheel assembly in the Lanzo build video, about halfway through: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbeihKZ_rcjFoIk.html

Hi, I’m just starting to build and fly planes...one problem I am having is how to pick the best rubber for the plane and how to set it up. I have been breaking rubber and not getting a lot of run time. I have a Wakefield 45 in wing span and a few planes with 27 in. Wing span.. I have a KK Gypsie and a Jabber Wakkey on the shelf ready to build. I’d like to figure out the rubber problem first...any advice will help. Thanks
@domoremath
@domoremath 3 жыл бұрын
Use super sport rubber, also here's a list of recommended motors for various models: freeflight.org/Library/TechLibrary/RubberMotorsSpecificModels.pdf Also check hippocket aeronautics, they have a lot of useful info about rubber motors. Good luck!

Any vids of toura where you show how to build the frames? Well actually joinging framing between the two
@domoremath

Not sure which frames you're referring to, maybe joining the fuselage halves? Some of the build videos show the complete build, including that.

Too bad R/N and Penn Valley are no longer in business. The rule for prop diameter is it should be minimum of square root of wing area. The chord is as important as the span. Weight equals lift, lift relates to wing area, wing area relates to drag, drag equals thrust, thrust relates to swept area of prop, disk area relates to square of diameter.

@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
I just bend .015" wire over a 1/16" wire form, you can see it in some of the videos and there might be some info at HPA, but I should probably make a video about this, will put it on the to do list, thanks.

I have 2 of those in kit form that came with those prop kits, altho the props didn't have much pitch. so they went in the drawer
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
I think the p/d ratio is the usual 1.2 (or 1.3, I'd have to check) which is plenty, I've made a bunch of the PK-4 props, they are really nice, really rips it up there, too bad they are not available anymore. You should make one of your kits, it's one of the best flying cabins I've ever seen.

I found the build from your answer on the other video. One question. How much more weight (or would it be feasible) if an elevator control was added with the rudder control? Thanks for sharing your flying videos! Your really inspiring with what can be done with rubber powered airplanes.
@domoremath
@domoremath 6 жыл бұрын
It would probably only add a few grams, but for 30 something inch oldtimers I'm not sure it will add anything, they already fly great, and I like to keep it close to freeflight. Might be worth it for Coupes or Wakefields, although I don't even bother to use the variable-incidence tail anymore, seems like rudder alone does the trick.
@realMartinHamilton
@realMartinHamilton 6 жыл бұрын
domoremath thanks s so much for the reply. I'll go with rudder only then! Love your videos!

A great flyer. What is the estimated thrust of the prop at launch? In your opinion, would replacing the rubber motor with an electric motor work?
@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
You could use an electric motor with a smaller prop, but this was designed as rubber power and I wouldn't change it from that!
@earlyhemibill
@earlyhemibill 7 жыл бұрын
I had one of those awhile back. Have thoughts of doubling it. What do you think?
@domoremath
@domoremath 7 жыл бұрын
For a 'jumbo' version, I'd suggest scaling it up to 40", that should take a 16-18" prop. Maybe 48" if you want a super large one, but I don't think I'd go much larger than that!
@mikek6188
@mikek6188 9 ай бұрын
Just finished building one. Can you please tell me what rubber motor you used? I was thinking of starting with 4 loops of 1/8 inch.
@domoremath
@domoremath 9 ай бұрын
I've been using 14 strands of 1/8" rubber, 22" (or 24") long, you can get a little over 800 winds. That's for the 12 3/4" prop, really blasts it up there. The 8 strand motor you are thinking about is what I use for 9 1/2" plastic props, like the Gizmo, if you're using that, though the Gull can take a huge prop!

Wind was blowing east, so probably Long Island! Check out this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f810aKaq2JmcYqc.html ; SG got up almost 400 feet in that one, hit a powerful thermal, I don't think either a wing or stab dethermalizer would have gotten it down, but of course nothing stops you from steering out of the thermal!

I've made quite a few from scratch, but in most of these videos I use precut props (from Volare products), that saves some time in that you only have to sand, shape, and dope them.

what tissue are you using and where can I can get some ?
@domoremath
@domoremath 7 жыл бұрын
I don't use tissue anymore, too many problems with loosening due to moisture. The wing/stab/rudder are covered with Mylar, 1/3 mil for the wing and 1/4 mil for the rest, you can get that from FAI model supply or Retro RC and other places. I'm using polyspan lite for the fuselage, only supplier I know for that right now is Mike Woodhouse. (you could probably substitute tissue or light silk for the fuselage).
@charlesbovalis6591
@charlesbovalis6591 7 жыл бұрын
WOW - thank you and one more question: I found the mylar you are talking about at retrorc but they only have it in clear. Are you using some sort of dye to get the desired color ? Also, does the mylar have its own heat-activated glue on or do you use something else to stick it ? Thank you again for your time. Your input is very much appreciated. Charles.
@domoremath
@domoremath 7 жыл бұрын
Glad to be of help. The mylar is clear, I spray it with Design Master Floral Spray (available online), they have a series called "Just for flowers" which is basically just a spray die, though I've also used some of their more opaque colors. I usually mention in every video exactly which color I use, so you can see what they look like. I attach the Mylar with UHU glue stick, you just rub it on and you have some time to position the Mylar, check my Pacific Ace building video for some comments on that, also you can find a lot of useful info at HPA. Have fun building!
