An interesting oldtimer from the Jimmie Allen series; plans and parts from Bob Holman. I started this last November and finally got in some trimming sessions; it's been tricky to trim, still needs work but I have to wait until it's calmer. A thread on the build is here : www.hippocketaeronautics.com/h...

I like that you scallop the formers so the covering is attached to the stringers alone. Makes a smooth looking fuselage.

Thanks, I learned that trick from model mags back in the 1960's.

Love the old racers. I like the geebee type as well. The early predecessor to the spitfire looks a little like that with the cockpit way aft. Lovely plane.

Thank you, yes I really like old racers as well, that's the appeal of this design. The only disappointing part is that the airfoil is not good for rubber power, the glide stinks. I only fly rubber, but I have to say in this case that the SS would probably be really nice converted to electric!

I agree, the reason your videos are so good, is because you concentrate on the hobby and content. Many people just concentrate on promoting themselves and the subject second.

Thank you, yes its about the hobby. I also won't commercialize the site, so the number of views/likes are irrelevant (I'm not selling anything!) and so I can focus on content that I think is informative (though maybe not highly viewed).

Do more math......That flight would stand up well to a SAM SOS event......Very well done. Sometime when I'm visiting my daughter in NYC, I'll have to meet you for a flying session. Really like your videos...right now I'm building another Lanzo Classic for our SAM electric Wakefield event. I'm trying to get it to come in under 10 oz. ready to fly. Jay

sounds good Jay, just give me a heads up when you're planning on being around. Another Lanzo classic, I guess you liked the first one! Build it light and I'm sure it will perform, Chet's designs are pretty nice.

Super build, but then you put day glow orange instead of silver on a Silver Streek? What madness is this?
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Actually it's one of my favorite reds, and it seemed appropriate for a racer, given that there were many red racers. Part of the reason for the 'madness' is that silver planes tend to disappear in the background on overcast days once you get it up a little!

What a beauty, I look forward to when you get her trimmed out for flight to where you like it. I am finishing a BA Cabin from Jim and Bob's plans/short kit........ The BA cabin has been a pleasure and is quite nice, this might be a bit too much for me yet (fourth build). Have you checked out George Reich's Nats Fuselage Winner? Jim gives two fuselage options. It looks quite nice, that may be my next project.

Love the shape of the stab on the Silver Streak.

Yes I know the GR Nats Fuselage Winner, looks really nice, I'm sure it will be a great performer, I've bought most of Bob's/Jim's plans/kits over the years! I have the EB kit for the JA Parasol, might do that one soon.

I hear you..... I have started a stockpile of plans/kits. I find studying various plans quite informative. Collectively they paint a much bigger picture. The idea that there are so many people dedicated to preserving the older designs and putting them out there as kits is simply something worth supporting. It's a wonderful component

Lovely work. What do you use as weight to balance the CG in the nose?

In this case I just moved the battery forward into the nose.

I am a huge fan, just got back into this fine hobby of ours, and the mastery, craftsmanship and professionalism you showcase just blew me away. One Question I would like to ask: I know (as anyone following this fine channel would know) that you use Design Master Just for Flowers paints on mylar and polyspan. Do you treat the surface with anything before applying the paint/dye? I'm from Europe, I don't have access to those paints (yet), and all the paints I'we ever tried on models and test pieces (mylar covered) just peeled off right away, or did a terrible job at covering. Also, the dope you use, what kind is it? We call everything lacquer here in Europe, it's hard to discern sometimes the compounds you fine flyers use in America, when everything is called 'dope' there :D.
@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
For Mylar I don't do anything, just spray on two light coats, for polyspan, I put on two 50% thin coats of nitrate dope, then spray the color. You should have something similar to the flower paint in Europe, it just has a lower level of acetone than the usual stuff. The dope is Nitrate, but Butyrate is more common here, I think the dope you get in Europe is Nitrate, sometimes it's called banana oil, check on hip pocket aeronautics, there are a lot of helpful European modelers there. Good luck with your building!

Tell us about your prop and wheels. Were the wheels part of Holman's short kit?
@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
Not in this case, though there are other Holman kits where he provides hardwood wheels. These are balsa wheels I bought from Penn Valley Hobby, now sadly gone, otherwise you can just turn them on a drill press. I've carved lots of props from scratch, but this is from a blank from Volare products, which are nice and save some time.

How do you attach nose block to fuselage? Do you use magnets? I was wondering if I use magnets then how will I add shims for down or right thurst. Thank you.
@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
No, I just have a snug fit with balsa, you can see it in the Lanzo video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbeihKZ_rcjFoIk.html . Since I use a tension stop, the rubber keeps the nose block in so you don't have to worry about it falling out (as it will without the tension stop).

You use balsa, bamboo, and bass wood, do you ever use Paulownia?
@domoremath
@domoremath 5 жыл бұрын
I used Paulownia many years back for some carved props, but that's about it, I haven't used bamboo for years either, everything is mostly balsa, with a little bass for the bigger stuff.

Hello again, This design is so awesome so I started to build one myself. Your plan said 10" prop, 11" is what I've seen on other places and the print I've got says 11,5". You made it 12", and then used an even larger, so haha. Do you hold fast with 12,3/4 inches, is it optimal by your meaning?
@domoremath
@domoremath 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, I blew it on that one, the 12 3/4 was a mistake, the Sky Gull can handle that but definitely not the SS. The Silver Streak doesn't have much of a lifting airfoil and no undercamber, so it has to fly kind of fast (not a surprise - looks like a race plane and you have to fly it like one! I even comment on that in the first flight in the video). I'd go with the 11" prop and see what that does.

Thanks for such fast reply. Yes, it reminds me a lot of the design of "Mike" and "Ike", DGA-4 & 5, which I built a small electric RC-model of recently. Art Deco racers look really nice in my taste, which otherwise mainly revolve around military designs. Coming from a "career" as a Control Line Combat pilot, speed and fight floats my boat I guess (lifts my airfoil?) But thank you, again, I have yet to carve a prop and it's a relief knowing that I probably won't have to carve three or more of them before seeing a decent enough flight. If I may make a request, I would like to see more details of how you rig your motors with different hooks for different needs. You seem to have a lot to choose from and I am confused as how to deduce robustness contra weight.
