Thanks, this was much needed! The next chance i get i'm gonna build a micro Rubber/RC for the yard. I'm reasearching how small a plane i can build that has a rudder and elevator?
@domoremath19 сағат бұрын
That's good to hear. The smallest I've built are about 24", but they fly kind of fast, I prefer around 28", like the Pacific Ace or many others, those fly nice and are easy to control. My bias is for rudder only, if it's trimmed that's all you really need and it saves weight.

What is the lubricant
@domoremath15 күн бұрын
You can buy lubricant from indoor free flight supply or go to 2 min in the video - you can make your own using green soap and glycerin, just boil the alcohol off the glycerin. However, for the last few years the only lubricant I've been using is a silicone lube, Molykote 33 medium (from Dow Corning), it's great.

Can you share some ideas on how to carve a prop block with a specific P/D ratio and how you mount the blades at a specific angle to the spar?
@domoremathАй бұрын
Get Ron Williams book, 'Building and flying indoor models', he shows how to lay out the block and several different ways to do it - you can carve it from a block or build it up with balsa strips. I mark the center line on the blade lightly and that's where the spar goes.

Yes, it's nerve wracking, those rafters are killers, I've lost dozens of planes in them over the years. I lost the Cassutt racer after only a few flights, which is frustrating, it's not as bad if I at least get to fly them a bit first!

@domoremathАй бұрын
Greetings - actually microfilm is not allowed for Manhattan Cabin. I'm using superultrafilm, which is a .9 microns thick plastic that I got from Ray Harlan years back. I don't think it's available anymore, but you can currently get ultrafilm, which is 1.4 microns thick, from Indoor freeflight supply or J & H aero.

I'm really intrigued by indoor...and nothing beats a wheel landing! Excellent!
@RedstonePyroManАй бұрын
Oh, indoor is the best. The planes are simple to make and the lightness is so extreme that the planes appear to swim in the air. This is the most advanced ROG category...I'd say start with some of the FAC events with wheel landings first

Decades ago I made a peanut scale Nesmith Cougar from a kit, but changed the fuselage longerons from 1/16" square kit wood to 1/32" square 6lb/cu. ft. contest wood. Redesigned the rest of the model the same way. Covered in condenser paperspray dyed red. Would not fly! Stalling all over the place. Over countless trim flights I gradually added LOTS (for an indoor model) of lead to the front to get an all up weight of 5.5 grams. Then it flew exceedingly well. If I had a first flight like your Manhattan Cabin I would have had a grin that would have lasted for a whole week! Great effort!

@domoremath2 ай бұрын
Thanks Joshua, I was thinking of using 1/64" striping tape for the window, but I'll give the sharpie a try. The wheels given in the kit are nice, you should sell them separately, I wouldn't mind having a few pairs!

Nice design and construction. Absolutely beautiful flight. I used to build and fly no-cal and penny planes. I don't know where to buy indoor wood and materials anymore.
@domoremath2 ай бұрын
The nice part about both no-cal and pennyplane is that I basically use light outdoor wood! One can get good quality 5-6 lb. sheets from Easy Built Models; I use indoor wood (.025") for the rolled tubes and prop blades, and you can get that from indoor free flight supply.
@Gator_Bait_Motorsports2 ай бұрын
@@domoremath Thanks for the info, I'll look them up.
@EleanorPeterson2 ай бұрын
Splendid! But what does 'no-cal' mean in this instance? Is it a food reference to 'zero fat' or 'no added sugar', as in low in calories and super lightweight aeromodelling building techniques, or is it something more technical?
@domoremath2 ай бұрын
No-cal means 'no calories'. The idea is that it is a model of a scale plane, but it has a profile fuselage instead of a built-up fuselage; with that lack of 'calories', one can make the plane very light and get incredible flight times.

Agreed. It 'sits' beautifully.🙂 Maybe something to do with the broad, low-aspect-ratio wing?
@domoremath2 ай бұрын
@@EleanorPeterson Yes the huge wing definitely has something to do with it; I'll be making another example probably in the Fall - the Bonzo racer, also with a huge low AR wing, I'll bet it will fly like the Cassutt, or at least I hope so!
