I personally would put flax/chia and nuts (especially walnuts and pecans) ahead of tomatoes. I am not sure I understand the sunscreen argument, though, so maybe I am missing something. I 100% agree with him on most of what he said. It should be emphasized that there is no big broccoli making the circuits with all the doctors making sure they know the benefits like the drug companies do.

Citrulline can do what Viagra does for blood vessels and it does not require prescription.
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 4 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for sharing. My understanding is that viagra increases blood flow by blood vessel dilation which is also what nitric oxide does. However I see that citrulline is one of the by products of NO generation from nitric oxide synthase. So I would expect that citrulline would inhibit NO and so reduce blood vessel dilation. Though I do see that citrulline lowers blood pressure. So I could be wrong!

It makes no sense that Milk fat would "trap" the Polyphenols and make them indigestible. Is he saying that milk fat can't be absorbed by the body? If anything fat usually helps the body absorb nutrients
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 4 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for sharing. Interesting. I have heard before (I think from Dave Asprey) that adding milk to your coffee reduces the benefit. And looking on the web, I see information both ways. It does seem that milk reduces the absorption of chlorogenic acid, one of the key compounds that Dr Li mentions. I can also find research that shows that it improves absorption and one that it makes no difference.

IIRC, someone gave an evolutionary reason why this may be so. When mammals were running around eating anything that might be edible, some of those things would be poisonous. There would be an evolutionary advantage if the young mammals got at least some protection from phyto poisons by ingesting mothers' milk that could bind to those toxins. Hence many plant chemicals seem to be bindable by milk fats. No idea how true this is or the extent of phyto chemical binding by milk, but an interesting and plausible hypothesis.

Atrophied gluteus medius on cane from anterior hip replacement after a fractured femoral stem. Could it regenerate?
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 4 күн бұрын
Hi Lynn, thanks for your question. I cannot comment on anything specific, but in general this sounds more like a question related to muscle protein synthesis rather than stem cells. The muscle is still there but has atrophied from lack of use. Exercise with good nutrition, including sufficient protein has been shown to increase muscle mass.

I'd really like to hear him defend his position that anti-nutrients do not exist. (1:4:30) The inhibitory effect of certain chemicals in certain foods is well known and I don't believe it's debated though it is debated just how significant the effects will be and also how much sprouting soaking and fermenting can reduce or eliminate these substances.

Hi thanks for your comment. I thought this comment from Dr Li was interesting. Maybe it is just a naming thing, or it depends on the circumstances. The way he described milk in coffee sounds like an anti-nutrient.

Cancer also uses Stem Cells. How does one deal with is matter ?
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 4 күн бұрын
Hi Samuel, thanks for your question. Dr Li does talk about cancer stem cells in the book and the need to destroy them. He proposes some foods that can do this such as green tea and purple potatoes. More generally Dr Li talks about food being kinder and gentler than drugs and not stimulating unnatural effects, such as over active stem cells. But more generally what is your concern? In general more stem cells and more active stem cells are associated with better health outcomes. I have not seen any data correlating stem cell populations with cancer.

Isn’t hair not cells, but just keratin etc.? Isn’t the cell in your scalp and it produces the hair? If you injure your skin or lung, isn’t it the existing non-stem cells dividing that fix it? Is it really stem cells migrating there and taking on the characteristics of the cells in that area?
@ModernHealthspan
@ModernHealthspan 4 күн бұрын
Hi Julia, thanks for your comment. I think dandruff is the skin from the scalp, not hair. WRT to regeneration, I thought that too, but I saw another video talking about the process of tissue repair, which had a two step process. Firstly cytokines being sent out from the wounded area causing stem cells to be released into circulation and secondly a local (I think it is called Stem Cell Factor) cytokine is released which pulls the stem cells out of circulation at the wounded area. In the (mouse) study, the stem cells had Green Fluorescent Protein in them and the tissue became green. So this would agree with Dr Li's explanation.
@coffeebreakchat2450
@coffeebreakchat2450 3 күн бұрын
@@ModernHealthspan I'm no expert but I've seen several learned people explain some of the complexities of tissue healing. Yes, the mechanism you describe is definitely one way. I believe another is with local transit amplifying cells. These are progenitors of specific tissue types that can easily breed more of those type of cells. Eventually these seem to become inactive, pending replacement by true stem cells. Then again, there may be de-differentiation of somatic cells in the area. The body can technically change any cell anywhere into an undifferentiated stem cell, ready to help in any organ of tissue. This can backfire and cause cancer though. There is an unwanted effect called EMT which is a common cause of tumour in older people. Endothelial cells are erroneously transformed into mesenchymal stem cells potentially leading to cancer. Thus this mechanism has to be tightly controlled. One observation that struck me was about the heart. It is the hardest to heal but the only one that never gets cancer. Most likely reason? No stem cells there. Who knows, the magnificent complexity of biology could have come up with other regenerative methods!

What's wrong with oxalates?
@jackbuaer3828
@jackbuaer3828 4 күн бұрын
Foods high in oxalates tend to be associated with the best health outcomes. This is because foods high in oxalates also tend to be high in magnesium, Linear dose-response meta-analysis indicated that each additional intake of 100 mg/d of dietary magnesium was associated with a 6% and 5% reduced risk of all-cause and cancer mortality, respectively. In other words, people with among the highest dietary magnesium had the lowest risk of all cause mortality in the study. I am citing Those people with the highest dietary magnesium likely had among the highest oxalate intake because dietary magnesium and oxalates tend to go hand in hand as mentioned above. Interestingly enough, magnesium through supplements (capsules and tablets) and without oxalates conferred no benefit. People with Kidney Stones definitely have to be cautious with their oxalate intake though. Oxalates certainly have some negative associations. So I suppose if one wanted to eat strictly for health, I suppose one could attempt to review the magnesium to oxalate ratio when choosing and prioritizing high magnesium foods.

@@harvinderubhi5540The human body makes oxalates endogenously and naturally, from Vitamin C and amino acids (like glycine). So you can't eliminate oxalates from the body entirely, just by avoiding foods that contain oxalates.

Hi Gianni, thanks for sharing and starting this thread! I have an ambiguous opinion on oxalates. They are in a lot of healthy foods, that are not worth avoiding because they contain oxalates but I do think you can over do them. I do not have kale smoothies for example.
