This is anecdotal, but I had bad Achilles tendonopathy (could barely walk). Went to the doctor and was told to see a podiatrist and get orthotics. I hated that idea, so I bought a pair of xeros to train in and switched to minimalist, wide toe box shoes for everyday life. Trained single arm club (inside, outside circles & shield cast) consistently and now I have no pain at all. I’m back lifting kettlebells and doing martial arts. There’s a lot of dodgy marketing and bogus health claims in the barefoot shoe marketing scene. But I can certainly get behind advocating for minimalist, wide toe box footwear and barefoot training.

I've been wearing flexible sole wide toebox shoes almost exclusively for a few months now, and my feet are starting to get really comfortable. I walk about five miles a day. I usually walk considerably more in the summer, but because it's so different, I have to break it up into walks shorter than 45 minutes or so. I was just reflecting this morning about how my feet are getting very used to it. Between this and doing kettlebell and heavy clubs barefoot, I'm starting to feel more strength in my feet than ever, and my feet were problematic for the better part of twenty years.

I bought these last year for my hunting & work boots after my Vivo boots started breaking on the sole. My one complaint is the break in period. I'm a barefoot, no sock kind of guy & you will want that sock to cushion your heel & sop up the blood if they're your first pair. Mind you, I'm only walking & climbing in these, and its a real problem. I haven't had a problem with any shoe like that since the 90's with a particularly rigid pair of Chuck Taylors. Try to ease into them if you can.

Japanese landscapers and labourers wear split toed boots called jikatabi, might be worth checking out if you can find a brand. I wear non-workboot jikatabi at the office, and they're about as roomy as my xeros - maybe a bit tighter around the little toe, but not a big difference. The look is a little out there, but they're far more comfortable than you would think. By the way, you are directly responsible for my orthotics gathering dust god knows where over the past year. I bought a pair of these after watching the first video. I love them. On long trail hikes, my feet feel better the further I get in the hike. It’s amazing. Like Mark mentioned, I can vouch for a REAL break in period. You will feel a little rigidity around the top of your heel, almost where it meets your Achilles. It’s not a big deal.

@@cioran1754 Vibram Soles. I wear a lot of vibram fivefinger as well as a few of their other "barefoot" boots/shoes and all of the soles have extremely long wear life while being unmatched in flexibility, for conformation, and tactile ground feel. I have to keep checking to make sure I didn't get something in my shoe the ground feel is just that transparent, and I rotate a couple pairs of VTrail 2.0 as daily drivers which are well over 2 years old each and still going strong through dog poop, river silt, basalt covered trails, desert sand, and machine washes. They're looking rough but still 100% fully intact with lots of wear life left on the tread. I might buy these just because I know how good the soles probably are, given all the other soles (including ice compounds for cold traction) and how well they work as well as how tough they are. I had to pause it on the sole just to let how they designed it sink in - it's pretty cool. It's a modified taba-style form without an actual physical split in the toes; there are varying size lugs in patterns and groups that make sense as well as fully covered arch protection.

QUESTION/ “HEEL CAP”: Love the idea and I’m sure with these boots paired with a good Kettlebell rucking backpack they would be a killer combination for hitting up the local hiking trails by me. My only concern with these boots are the heel caps that there’s been complaints over. Then I also read that some people just hit them with a sledge and break up the cap and the problem is solved? Mark, how have you handled this and plan to handle with your fresh pair? Thanks

A good boot Repair shop can remove them. Outside of fort Bragg a place would take issued boots and turn them into "SOPC specials" - remove the toe/heel caps and put a wedge sole on; ruck all day without a blister. You could also just glue a strip of 1/4" felt over where the heel cap is on the inside. The heel is still rigid but it forms against the back of your foot.

Pro-tip for breaking these in: wear good thick wool socks (eg Darn Tough U1050s), soak the boots or at least the heel/shank in warm water (and leather conditioner if you're really high speed), and then wear them all day or as long as you can - the minimal discomfort up-front is a small price to pay for perfectly fitting boots. And if you're DoD, you've been in wet boots anyway, so sucks to suck.

So a shoe is probably more versatile for me for now. How long have you been rucking? Have you seen any noticeable benefits?
