I’m a retired Canadian infantry soldier. I served in Kandahar in 2007. I enjoyed working with the US and other coalition forces. The Kandahar Airfield (KAF) was pretty impressive in size and all the creature comfort things it offered. The FOBs on the other hand were what I expected, but the DFaCs and all the free soda was awesome :)

I was actually part of the unit in this video. It was pretty crazy down there at this time. There are a few great memories that come back when i watch this once a year.

Thanks to all your young men for your service to this country. My son spent a year in Afghanistan 2010 .when all the young soldiers got off the buses at fort hood. All of them look like they had lost so much weight. To this day my son doesn't like talking to me about it. Much respect from Texas.

What does patriotism mean? My direct ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Spanish American, WW1 and WW2. Of those I think the Spanish American was absolutely shady. My Gr Grandfather was sorry to hear WW1 was over as he loved the action and the killing. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Medal along with many more. Without a strong knowledge of history we are without a compass. Some count religion as a better means of navigating the terrain but if you are well versed in history then you will know the bloody circles that all too often leads to. Pretext is a dangerous game.

I lived that life in Anbar province in 07. 5 km N of Camp Fallujah. sunni uprising, al-qaeda iraq, ex-republican guard, shit 7 days a week from jan-april. lived on an outpost in a nasty little place called al-karmah. OP Delta. so how in tf did one platoon get that job? how did you defend the OP and run missions/patrols with just 4 squads? how far was QRF and did you guys see Apaches or other air support often? why did the Lt. take off nametape/patches but nobody else? hope y’all made it, I felt everyones words and man some of the sounds brought back memories. ‘Protesting is a lot easier than fighting’. Burning a soldier in effigy. THAT is the most selfish form of protesting. More like it’s done out of fear than true desire to support the cause for freedom. Well done piece. People join up for a myriad of reasons. One thing I find interesting is the common quotation of the ‘War is a Racket’ book other than stating the author was a decorated officer and he became disillusioned with the military. For all the chatter of the ‘big business’ interests, I don’t see anyone honing in on them and railing against the ‘true beneficiaries’ of war.. It’s mainly talk of ‘grunts’ as if they were a lower class. Fact is, most people wouldn’t last more than a month doing what they do. If they even got through the training in the first place. Saying ‘they’ve never attacked us on our soil and we’re invading’ is an overly simplistically way of viewing it through those same rose-colored stained-glass windows. If there was never a response to the expansion of terrorism, do people think it would just automatically end? They would police themselves and not expand? Doubtful.

I think In this particular situation body armor is more of a hindrance then a help. Mounting climbing with a full load long distances without a foreseen engagement . When you do get engaged, you cannot maneuver as fast, and will be at a huge disadvantage to the very lightly packed taliban
