DIY- How to: Remove & Install Water Pump & coolant Drain/Change on 2.5L 4-cylinder engine 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5
Is the water pump showing signs that it has started leaking or it has stopped altogether?
In this video, I’ll show you what a water pump looks like when it initially starts to leak, how to remove and install a new one and how to perform a coolant flush and refill. The following video has been broken down into 3 videos to keep it short and to give as much detail as I can when doing this.
This applies to 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which can be found in 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5.
Please be sure to check out all three videos A, B and C.
here is a link to the 1/4" drive torque wrench. inexpensive.

• How to Remove + Instal...
How to remove & Install the water pump and Serpentine belt.
Even though you only need to remove the water pump belt from the Water Pump pulley ONLY, it’s a good idea to go ahead and replace this belt. For this, the serpentine belt will need to be removed. Might as well replace that belt too
Video C-Step 3: Remove & Install Water Pump & coolant drain/Change: (this video)
this video I will show you how to remove and install a new one and how to perform a coolant flush and refill.
All parts used are Mazda OEM parts. When ordering the water pump, you need to ensure that you get the O-ring for the water inlet pipe.
When the water pump is removed, most of the liquid in the engine does drain out. There is no need to add water to flush the block, we will simply drain the radiator which will empty the lower and upper rad hose, thus getting majority of the coolant out. Since there is a likely hood that not all the coolant might come out, we do not want to mix other brand coolant with Mazda coolant, so we will just refill with Mazda Coolant. The cost is the same, not worth the $10-$15 saving to risk other engine/gasket problems
This is probably the best time to go ahead and replace the thermostat as well since you have the coolant out and you are at high enough miles to change the water pump, so it's most likely time to replace to replace the thermostat as well
Video on how to change out the thermostat:

TIP.... at 16:20 time marker, you can see on the new water pump there's a hollow hole at the top of the pump, that's the pulley alignment guide and stopper. If you insert a big enough bolt or a 3/8 socket extension this will prevent the pulley from free spinning and will allow you loosen or tighten the pulley bolts. **The water pump belt is stretch to fit, once its remove it should be replace with a new belt. When changing a water pump it's always a good practice to change the thermostat at the same time, which is located on the opposite side of the lower block. This will save you a headache and $$ later. *** Clean your intake valve, its important on GDI engines. Mazda added an Oil and Air separator on 2014-2022 models, however they arent very effective at all. You will still have tons of carbon build up. If you want your engine to last or get better MPG clean the intake valves and system. My 2014 Mazda3 had 70K on the clock, I noticed my MPG dropped to 32-34mpg on long highway drive (400 miles) after cleaning the intake valves/system my MPG went back to 39-41 mpg driving at 70mph.

nice! thank you for sharing!! i really appreciate all the input. a) i know of the that hollow hole, but i found that since i didn't have side access, it was of no use. can't get two things in that tight space between the fender wall and pump with two hands...could only do it as i show in the video. b) couldn't agree with you more! i did the same, i've got that mentioned in my notes and have the link to the video in the descriptions as well. C) i would love to do that...can you share more on how to do that and your thoughts on adding an oil can?

Thanks for the video. For the pump pipe O-ring, a small amount of dielectric grease applied to it will help get it on the pipe as well as help make the insertion into the pump housing very easy. @@footprintsinconc Just a quick update to say my 2018 CX-5 was in for warranty work (Switchable HLA's had to be replaced - Mazda Service Alert) and while they were doing the job, found the water pump was leaking, and a Timing cover (oil) leak. Replaced the water pump and Timing Cover gasket. All covered under warranty. My vehicle only had 33,000 miles on it. Very low mileage in my opinion to have these kinds of issues arising.

good question. its a mechanical pump. its driven by a belt, it spins the fins, creating a flow. if it was electric, then there would be wiring going to the pump and it would have an electric motor on it.

i just tighted with down without a torque wrench as there is no room to do that. one way to guage it would be when you remove the bolts, feel how tight it was...then tighten it right away and then loosen it again to get a sense of how tight you need to be when reinstalling the pulley.

so is this the same for any model year ? 2018 Mazda 3 GT 2.5L ? and if same, how long should it take to do this, if you're a mechanic with a hoist ? asking because today I paid a mechanic for my stepsons car to change the water pump, and he pulled the it took longer than the rated time due to having to move some mounting bolts or some b.s. and charged me $100 more than the 1.95 hrs its rated for. I debated a bit, but gave up and paid it and now he'll never see my families 4 cars in there, for a $100 extra today. Claimed it took almost 3 hours. from you show here, I can't see it being longer than 1.5 hours for a mechanic with a hoist and tools. Going to google review the fckr, after I double check with my own mechanic friend (who lives too far for me to bring my stepsons car too).

the SkyActiv-G - 2.5 L I4 engine starts at 2013 to present, see the link here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mazda_engines now in a mazda 3, there might be less room becuase it's a smaller car, i can't tell you for sure becuase i haven't physically seen how much room there is in a mazda 3 engine compartment... having said that, it shouldn't take more than the book time. honestly, i think the mechanic should eat the time difference if he is charging more than the book time. the book can be wrong. i think if the mechanic wants to charge more the, he has to prove to you (that would be to lift the car and show you physically, why it supposed to take more time than the book.
