Thank you so much for the explanation. It really helped me figure out what I have been dealing with. I got an arch-supporting orthotic and that has taken the pressure off my toes. Taking the orthotic out and walking in the same shoes WITHOUT the orthotic, caused immediate pain in the arch of my foot. That's how I knew my arches had fallen. Thanks doc for confirming everything. You are the best!!

This is the best video I've seen about Morton Neuromas. I've had this condition in both feet for many years, but it recently got much worse when I wore soft-bottom sports sandals when I took my dogs outside for walks on uneven ground. For the past two years, it has felt like a stone is lodged in my foot with a balloon feeling around it. If I'm up on my feet a lot, I have horrible foot cramps and muscle spasms. I'm at the point of getting surgery for it.

A neuroma will not have a lump. You may feel like there a bump when walking, but only a sensation. And neuroma’s NEVER go away. They, the nerve settles down but the nerve with the scaring will always be there. You can kill the nerve with alcohol injections or surgery. Likely you can aggravate the nerve by squeezing your metatarsals together from the bottom of the foot pad. Usually you’ll feel a not so good pain.

Had trouble walking for years. I have many neuroma not only between the toes but under my foot. The pain is sharp like an electric shock. I bought some 5 finger vibram shoes and put heavy padding in but the problem is with padding it causes the top of the shoe to dig into top of foot. Been trying different paddings to prevent this. I cannot walk a lot but since I got the five finger shoes can go shopping. Any form of shoe unless five fingers is out of the question. Misery pain running down the toes and under the foot. This is serious pain. Had to modify to cope with it. Long walks are out of the question. About 15 years ago I had some steroid injections, don't recommend, made it worse. The pain was off the scale for 6 months. I went to see a professional to do cryotherapy costing around 4K. Did some research before considering to my shock horror one guy was so crippled after cryotherapy he regretted it. Not available on NHS. What does this mean. You have to learn to live with it using high quality memory foam and less walking.

This is an excellent explanation. Thank you. I have had an intermittent Mortons neuroma for a couple years now and have learned how to function without drugs and surgery. You might want to try self massage. Firstly: I only experience some of the symptoms you list; Pain between 3 and 4 metatarsil, numbness and it is much worse when barefoot. Also many days I have no pain at all. Secondly: I am an active hiker often walking 10-12 miles in a day. If on a hike and it acts up, I stop and do a 2 or 3 minute message and a good poking between the 3/4 metatarsil acts like a release. It hurts when you hit the right spot but after I can put on my boots and I am good for another few miles.

I experience something so similar... the intermittent nature of the pain is so mysterious. It comes at odd times, and sometimes is completely absent. Other times, it is so intense I can't walk. By massaging I can make it go away for awhile (sometimes), but then it comes back. If I play a a racket sport, I don't notice any pain. But when I set out on a walk, I never know if I will be fine, or limping back home with pain. I just can't make any sense out of it.

I made the Dr send me for an MRI with focus on my second toe. I think sometimes, we have to be our own medical advocate and researchers...... why was it missed for so long? Because the Dr felt it was too rare and did surgery on the 3rd and 4th toes that didn't stop my pain.

Use one of those donut shaped foam bunion pads - stick it on with the hole over the point of pain. A tiny bit of pressure change is all it takes to take the pressure off the nerve (for me, anyway) and the pain was gone within a day. My foot doesn't like hard wood floors in stocking feet but otherwise it's fine (tile floor, no problem, very weird). You're welcome. I had this years ago, and I came close to passing out with the excruciating pain. I had surgery, which was the most painful surgery I have ever had in my life, before or since, but once that pain settled down, the neuroma pain has never troubled me again. I get odd twinges in my other foot, but I wouldn't go through that surgery again. Interesting about the lumbar spine, as I have been in a wheelchair since 2014 due to a problem with my lumbar spine, and listening to this video, I am wondering if that was what was really causing the neuroma all those years earlier.

Got mine from deadlifting and lots of standing and possibly wearing boots too small. Or could be one of them and not all.

OK, whatever. I would wear my compression socks to bed and wake up at some point with this crazy stabbing neuroma pain. The compression of my toes due to the tight socks was the culprit. An easy fix, so far. I got a lighter compression sock and stopped wearing them overnight. Happy happy.

Got EDS, ganglions, bursitis, menopause causing more weight baring as have had bunions, tailors bunions, Raynaud's and sciatica and joint subluxations for decades from Ballet.. Im in agony. Got an infra red light. Praying it helps. Any advice if it does. PS hammer toes can be related to occult tethered cord in the spine. I have major spinal issues. It all runs into each other joint. I call it the EDS cascade of hell. Im losing the ability to walk.

I've been dealing with this between my 2nd & 3rd toes on my right foot. It's been going on for over a year. It started when I injured the foot last spring. I went through 3 rounds of oral steroids, which helped a lot with the pain, but it didn't really fix it.

What if the pain I’m having is directly on the 4th metatarsal not between 3rds 4. And when I step my 4toe clicks and you can see my toe move to the side. It very painful I have had it for probably 15 years or more. I have tried tons of shoes orthotics etc.

I have had cortisone jabs which have not been successful. If I have surgery I know this will make my front foot numb. Will I ever be able to walk again. It has caused metatarsalgia and I cannot walk will it ever get better.

In my case, it could be early onset but I just feel a weird pain between the third and 4th toe, hurts to apply pressure, but doesn’t feel like a marble or socks. It just feels like I’ve been wearing tight shoes but it never goes away.

What if it is caused by your back? Around six minutes in you talk about the nerves that travel from the low back to the foot and how you have to make sure that isn't the cause. With an EMG/NCV. Do you have a video about this and if not can you explain or point me in the right direction?

I'm not sure about this explanation. I developed MN recently and in my case it was certainly a footwear-related issue (specifically cycling shoes that were too tight). It got quite bad (pain and numbness of third and forth toe) until I realized what the problem was and simply changed my shoes to a more roomy set. I am quite sure there is no fundamental problem with my arches; it was simply caused by tight footwear. I know you need a 'clickbaity' video title for KZfaq, but I don't think it is fair to describe the conventional medical understanding of MN as "wrong".

Dr. Kim, can Morton's Neuroma ("MN") be caused by repeated sudden trauma or not? For Example, working in a hazardous environment where heavy weighted (5 to 10 pounds) small objections are prone to fall from heights of 3 to 4 ft, and impact the top/dorsal section of the foot and metatarsals ?
