I like how you explain and give our your tips :) But I really think your tips mainly apply to more famous DJs. Being a club/cafe/bar/festival DJ for myself, I've learned a few extremely important things: - If you've got very good noise cancelling headphones, you'll mainly be fine on every sound system. If you can beatmatch at home, you should be able to do it anywhere else too. But just like Luke said, putting the volume on max at your home setup once in a while is a very good thing to practice how it may feel. Also make sure to put your headphone levels extremely loud once in a while, just to be prepared. - Make sure you've got EVERY type of music. If you're doing a lot of different events, you'll face a lot of different musical tastes. Because Moombahton works at one venue, doesn't mean it will work at another. Be sure to check for signs wether the biggest portion of the crowd likes it, if you see tapping feet, people dancing, moving/nugging heads and people coming in/not leaving, you're fine. If you see a lot of people leave, try a different genre. - Know how to mix EVERYTHING to EVERYTHING, if something completely clears the dancefloor, you'll need to know how to quickly switch to something completely different. - Don't play the same genre for too long, and especially don't play EDM for too long after eachother (especially here in the Netherlands) the crowd will often get bored of it after +/- 20 minutes - MAKE SURE you've got the tracks the biggest portion of your crowd knows. If you'll only play music that no one knows, you'll clear the dancefloor in no time, unless it's an underground club. - Do research on the venue you'll be playing. Check what kinda music is normally played there and get a feel for it. - In "commercial" clubs/cafes/bars the saying goes: Track selection is 80% making smooth transitions is 20% The tips Luke gave were really good, but more towards people that will play big venue's which is something beginner bedroom DJs likely aren't going to achieve on their first gig :p So that's why I decided to share what I learned :)

arrive 30 mins early, and hang out where you can see the crowd instead of in the VIP room, then you can soak up abit of the atmosphere and know the type of tunes to play

I went from bedroom DJ straight into a medium size UK club. Was about 300 people when full. Such a massive difference, but the differences in the crowd were the same week after week. Thurs nights were slow, people tired after almost a full week of work. Just trying to wind down. Fridays also a rather slow crowd but picking up a little. Sat nights wow, everyones full of energy and rocking the dance floor. So your mix style has to accommodate those changes. I used to do 1am to 2am, then get to work for 8am. A killer even when your younger. I dont have those energy reserves any more so gave it up some time ago for quality family time. So i have massive respect for Luke in what he fits into a single week, and run a company, and Kung Fu, and be a husband and dad. Just freaking amazing.

@dj_paultuk7052
@dj_paultuk7052 7 жыл бұрын
Approach the management, and offer to do a sample set to the staff after the club closes. Most clubs, UK anyway, close at 2am, but staff are there until 3am at least cleaning up. I used to do this and got 2 Residency's this way.
@derrick4096

I've played three huge clubs in Vancouver since starting DJing in January. 1. If you have early timeslots, no one will be there so you're playing for the club managers or company reps. I played 50 songs in an hour slot to show my transition skills and musical breathe. This worked wonders and the earned me later time slots. 2. Your first show will be awful, especially if you aren't familiar with CDJs. No way around this. 3. Have fun and keep calm! You should be playing for yourself as much as anyone else. 4. Once you have later slots, play less songs per hour and remember to take time to enjoy the music and drink your water. 5. Drop your originals! Even if they aren't 100% mixed and mastered yet, It's awesome to see the crowd dancing to your own music. I hope this helps you guys! If you're interested in my shit, @alexroseofficial or /alexroseofficial on the socials. Good luck everyone :)

Hey Luke, first off thanks for the awesome tips! But I think a lot of bedroom DJ's are playing of a intro-mid level controllers. With that being said do you think you could show us how'd you perform with a intro level controller? Something like a Pioneer DDJ-SB2 or DDJ-RB? Could make for an interesting challenge.

As a dancer guy that just wants to fill in when my local DJ goes to the bathroom or wants to take a small break.. I am very thankful for these videos. I could never do a full 4 hour set because I would want to dance and not be up at the Dj booth all night. I took your advice and purchased the RCA->Plug-converter for my DJ controller to be able to train DJing during the nights when everyone else at home are sleeping. My first video about trying this. And due the fact that I've watched almost all of your tutorials, I noticed in the video production phase several mistakes I made during the mixing. Now I can be better next time I have a timeslot to do another mix.

Its awesome that your sharing your knowledge, amazing stuff. Ive done some DJ club sets supporting big names but through ticket selling, which I no longer do as its great for a bit but after a while if you want to progress I truly believe you have to start thinking about production, which is the stage Im now at. I don't actually DJ in the traditional sense as I do live Launchpad sets and my ultimate goal is to produce and perform out in a similar fashion to @M4SONIC However playing with a Launchpad has its own set of challenges. The biggest one, how to get your gear into a booth without annoying other DJs? That is the tricky part and sometimes I'll get my gear in but have to put my laptop below the booth or behind me and play off memory, or play off to the side. I've done gigs where I am playing away while a tech is literally changing the mixer and CDJs as I go for the next act, so I totally get your prepare mentality. I also try to keep my sets as DJ oriented as I can so even though its a live performance I can still follow the energy of the crowd. If I get to the stage I am performing every part live then I guess I'll have to pre plan sets but right now my sets are a cross between live and DJing which has worked so far. Keep up the good work and keep dropping these awesome tip videos, really appreciate it 👊😎

great vid Luke! There's one thing that you forgot to mention and it has really hindered me in my DJ'ing. Sometimes where you're from also has a large effect on how you begin. For example where I'm from on the east coast of Florida people aren't into the club and dance music scene, so sometimes you need to move even just an hour away and test a different market. Thats how I had to do it, I drive usually an hour or more in Orlando. but I've gotten stuck into the Frat party rut. Any suggestions on how to get out into the fierce opener scene?

I’ve been dj’ing for a couple of months right now, but I don’t know how to get used to cdj’s. How do I prepare for playing on cdj’s when I’m used to a xdj rx2? I got both waveforms perfectly aligned on the display but this is of course not an option on the cdj’s, where you have the waveforms on the two different displays. How do I learn mixing like that? With a piece of paper or something on my xdj rx2 display and try mixing by ear? Tips please!
