I have to say thank you for this video, I had the fmx-aod conversion in my 70 cougar and had the aod built... 70 mph 1900 rpms. Huge improvement over the fix, thank you

Gear Vendors also make a direct kit that fits the Cougar with the FMX as a direct bolt in.

So it literally turns a 3 speed into a 6 speed and a 4 speed into an 8 speed? Forget the 6R80 swap, I'm throwing in a C4 with a Gear Vendors OD.

I would love to put a Gear Vendors in my 1991 F-350 with the ZF 5 spd. That would give me a total of 10 gears...

Went through this dilemma years ago with my F250 (C6 stock). Ended up fitting an E4OD with aftermarket controller. I wanted much lower cruising RPMs than what's possible with anything that doesn't have a locking torque converter.

Hi David - There are a lot of things to consider - in this application (Ford Falcon) the Gear Vendors is far better than an E40D. With the F250 many more possibilities and some pluses depending on terrain and load where the Gear Vendors is better and the lockup not so much. But yes if you are diesel trying to get down to 1700 rpm then you need a lockup. It is why we have sold thousands of Gear Vendors for the E40d to gear split ratios and why the tuck now has a 7 speed automatic in it stock.

Hi Rick, I didn't mean to suggest an E4OD in that application since it might not even fit under the floor of a falcon. I actually know a fellow member on oilburners.net that has an E4OD, 3:55 ratio and GV overdrive. Its the only truck I know of similar to mine with an even taller final drive ratio. I have a 3.08 rear end, but no aux overdrive. Not sure if I would really need 7 forward speeds since I already have 2 top gears. At freeway speeds the old diesel is turning 2300 RPM in 3rd and 1600 RPM in 4th.

I tried the Gear Venders in my Mustang years ago and the Over drive is not enough. i switched to a T5 with a .68 over drive ! this worked better with my 4.11 gears than the .78 over that the gear venders had! The gear venders id too expensive to not have a choice of over drive ratios, It cost more than my complete T5.

@@musclebone7875 my car sees both Street and strip, I run short slicks on the drag strip and tall tires on the high way! I got the best Drag times with 4.86 gears and 10'x 26 x 15 slicks but it was not street able!

l have just put Gear Vendors overdrive on my 79 firebird with stroked 455 olds haven't hammered it yet it was running 12.4

I'd rather have torque converter lock up in the 4R70W over the C4 with added on overdrive. You can lock and unlock the converter to split the gears up. My 4R70W in the Falcon feels like it shifts 6 times with lock up in 2,3,and 4th gear.

+Ryan Denney Hi Ryan - You would not if you ever tried a Gear Vendors. A 4R70 is a wide ratio trans that even with control of the lockup will never give you the close ratio of 6 actual ratios from 2.48 to .778. Power handling and reliability far greater with the Gear Vendors setup. If you ever get the chance to take a ride in a Gear Vendors equipped car you would then instantly feel the difference.

+Rick Johnson How does the GV know what gear the C4 is in? Without some sort of feed back from the C4 trans you'll likely never see all 6 ratios during a steady 20% throttle accel. I suppose in a fairly stockish 289/302 in a 3500 lb car you see 2 or 3 gear splits on down shifts. A late model roller 306 on 14lbs of boost doesn't have time for the trans and added over drive until to sort out who's doing the shifting and how often. Modern electronic transmissions still have there place in the performance market. The 2k price tag for a GV would buy lots of 4R70W parts. The GV unit will out last most C4s anyway.

Dont forget about transmission fluid temps when when used with a non lock-up transmission. Especially if you use a high stall converter. Ex: running a 3500 converter at say 55 mph would mean around 2000 rpm's. That a lot of slip and greatly shortens the fluid and trans life. 4R70W is the better high performance choice since it has lock-up and then you can run any converter you want.

Hi Makitta - Do not know how I missed responding to this earlier - it is a common misunderstanding about Torque Converters. When cruising steady at 55 as you point out you are only making about 50hp no matter how much engine you have or you would be accelerating. at 50hp at 55 mph or even say 100 hp at 80mph any decent converter is going to be very close to full 1:1. The stall only comes to play if you have the 400hp or so you built the converter to flash to. Call us anytime to discuss in detail. It is a great subject which we have proven for 35 yrs. We have now 5500 stall converters in cars like Jeff Lutz. Tom Bailey, Larry Larson, Bryant Goldstone - all doing 2000 rpm at 70mph in overdrive on the street with cars that make over 3,000hp ( of course at that moment of cruising they are really only probably at 65 hp during steady state cruising). The factory lockups on newer cars are to net another 5% in fuel economy because CAFE standards mean millions of dollars in penalties otherwise. So they want to run 1700 rpm at 70 and thus get every once of fuel economy possible. Our customer cares about 25% better fuel economy and Gear Vendors will get you that but our customer does not prefer the downsides of a lockup and its expense for the minor benefit it offers on the epa test cycle.

Hi Rick, I have a nice 64 Falcon w 260 motor a little warmed over plus a C4 (was changed at some time). Mine is just like this one same RPM's at 70. I have thought about doing the same thing since the 260 has a 5 bolt bellhousing a AOD will not work. I'm here in LA do you do this?

Could I put a GV on the back of my 4R75E? 8 speeds and lockup sounds good though I think the trans in OD then overdriven again would be too high a gear to pull in my tank 06 Crown Vic interceptor. But I have been kicking around the idea of a 427ci Windsor small block with a C6 and a GV. 6 speeds and a much shorter then the 5 foot driveshaft I have now.

I would agree with the second option as the stock trans is a CAFE built wide ratio and lockup - not a very performance oriented package - all about EPA. Call us at 800-999-9555 and discuss you use and engine, rear ratio etc.

What happens if you run a GPS speedhut speedo ? Do you need to run the speedo to signal the control box inside the car thanks

Our speedo wire input is to our signal generator at the overdrive. We put the correct ratio speedo gears in the overdrive for your rear gear and tire size. You would typically use that with the included ford speedo adapter to drive your dash but it has no bearing on the overdrive function if you do not screw in your stock speedo.

Column shifted Sprint? I thought all genuine sprints came with a 4 on the floor manual t-10.

I am not certain but my grand mother had an earlier sprint with automatic.

The 63 1/2 Sprint came with the 4 speed BW or the 2 speed auto hooked up to the 260 V8. Mine has a 302 with a C4. I dropped it off at the El Cajon Gear Vendors shop today for the install.

You're using the high beam dimmer switch to activate the overdrive. What happens when you are driving at night time?

Shifter button up on the shifter is also an option. When we use a floor mounted dimmer then we move your stock headlight dimmer over about 5 inches toward the pedals and up about 5 inches higher so you can still reach it easily but not bother your dead-foot position. Sounds odd to shift on the floor but it actually works very well because you can grab the overdrive gear manually with both hands on the steering wheel even when cornering at speed like from 2 to 2nd over and back down to second - like on canyon roads that are fun to drive.
