In this video we replace the knocking upper rear shock mounts and rear shocks on a Ford Fusion. Be mindful knocking noise can come from other suspension components such as sway bar links and control arm bushings. So before condemning as part make sure you isolate the cause of the noise.

Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 ford fusion and I need to replace the upper shock mounts and shocks because of the clunking noise coming from the back. This explains why. Never think these videos are not worth it. They are very valuable.

I'm in the exact same position. If the noise only comes from the left rear side, do you think it's necessary to replace the other side as well?

Any fusion owners hearing a clunk in the rear of their fusions. The noise is coming from the nut at the top of the shock. All you need to do is tighten it. I had it develop at like 60k miles, thought i needed new shocks. Just realized the top nut was loose causing the noise, give it a good snug and it wont knock. Use a pair of vice grips to hold the stud from spinning with the nut, since it wont tighten if the stud spins with the nut. It happened on both left and right rear. Just realize itll re loosen itself over time, i noticed it happens usually in the fall and spring times with temp change.

Yikes! You guys got hit worse than we did. It drifted a bit up here, so there was 6" in some spots, and well over a foot in others (some areas were 2'). Just got done an hour ago (still lightly snowing too). What really sucks is the ground isn't frozen under all that snow - got stuck quite a few times with the plow truck, and was watching the fireworks in the dark from the rocks and mud the snowblower was tossing everywhere. Was wet snow underneath the powder - the snowblower's exhaust was cherry red the whole pass. She was working hard!

Thank you for your video! My experience with a clunky rear shock absorber on a 2016 Lincoln MKZ (Hybrid): First attempt: Tried tightening the shock absorber rod nut, but it didn't turn much and didn't resolve the sound. Second attempt: Applied some penetrating oil and let it sit for a couple of hours. This time, without even holding the tip of the shock absorber rod, I could turn the nut with a 15 mm wrench for almost a full turn. I stopped tightening when the rod began to rotate with the nut. This resulted in more torque than the specified 22 lb.ft (possibly around 50 lb.ft). On a short test drive over a pothole, one of the shock rod ends broke off above the mount. It was clear that I had over-torqued the nut, causing the rod to reach tensile yield strength. I ended up ordering OEM Motorcraft shocks and Dorman shock mounts from RockAuto. Inspecting the old shock mounts, I didn't notice any obvious damage, but I replaced them regardless. This resolved the clunky noise issue. I didn’t remove the height sensors, and they weren't in the way. Additionally, I didn’t run the “Ride Height Calibration.” The car seems to drive fine. You might want to measure the height before and after to determine if a calibration is necessary.

Actually I'm glad you did post it. My wife's 2013 had the same noise but on the drivers side. I tore half the car interior apart trying to find out where it was coming from since it resonated inside the trunk wheel well. I was certain it was coming from there. Finally decided to jack the car up, took the wheel (that some idiot had air gunned on to about 300 lb-ft forcing me to destroy those stupid lug caps) off then removed the plastic wheel well covering. Shook the car and through a process of elimination finally figured out it was the stupid shock mount. Simple repair once I figured out where the noise was coming from but wasted hours locating the noise.

I get so used to buying aftermarket stuff that I always get burned by OE parts that are sold individually. One time I tried to buy an OE Cub Cadet starter for a diesel tractor, and they literally had every single part of the starter for sale separately - bendix springs, brushes, armature, gear, case screws, etc., etc. - was enough to give me a headache! Japanese motorcycle companies normally have an un-numbered listing above part #1 on the "fiche" that is a complete assembly - you can always tell by the massive price tag that it's complete. Just did a brake job on the Silverado yesterday - the 8th one in 92k miles. The first 5 were done under warranty, lol. Way to build 'em, GM! Had my neighbor drive me down to the garage that turned my rotors to pick them up ... and we broke down on the way back, HAHAHA! Never a dull moment in my life. Passenger side brake nearly caught fire! I melted a few gallons of snow on that rotor and caliper to keep the fire at bay. It was literally seconds away from flame. '03 Sable with 176k on it - I've been keeping her going for the past 5 years, but it's becoming harder and harder lately! 😂 Almost time to ship her ... to the boneyard. I ate lunch at 5:30 after that adventure. Him and his son just threw struts in it last week, and it has a noise that sounds like a bad strut! Rut roe! Was a complete assembly, so I don't think it was anything they did - just no-name Amazon parts for ya. 😉

Ok. My 14 Fusion had that rattle in the r/r area, my brother and I checked all the suspension, that mount, since I was told by alot of people that was the problem. Finally I bought the mount and bumper, honestly once it was apart, bingo. The inner bushing was shot. But between the bumper, being recessed in the bracket, and the nut, is what held it enough to not be able to tell. So fellow Fusion owners, if you get that rear rattle, don't hesitate, but and change that strut mount! Bumper not so necessary. That's for the vid, def easier taking the whole strut out to change it! 🙏🙏😊

That's a great video man.... Don't be so hard on yourself.... It all doesn't have to be the "diagnosis to end all diagnosis'es" where you need 3 autels and a Verus..... Us home gamers, don't have that stuff anyways, so, it's fun to watch, but..... In reality, I'm screwed, if I run into that. My scan tool is a Blu Driver.... and I'm so pathetic, I actually think it's great. It tells me what I need to know. When you look at recommended repairs, it has worked for me 100% of the time. Maybe I'm just lucky.... What seems obvious to you Sir, given your years of experience, is all new to us "regular people". My uncle is telling me "I hear a clunk noise in the back"... Ford Sedan. So I'm like, I dunno. I'm a GM guy. Then I see this video, it's like, holy crap, that's it??? Whoa. I could get these parts off amazon, and I could do it.... I mean, not on a hoist, like a superpro, but... in the driveway, on jackstands.... Look, he's retired, his 401k could be a lot better than it is.... I wish he had asked me sooner... But it is what it is... So anytime I can save him a few bucks, it really helps him out.... So, while we joke about hugging a polar bear, your videos, ARE ACTUALLY HELPING REAL PEOPLE! Not like, talking, and flushing money down the sewer, but ACTUALLY HELPING. I hope you keep it up. Best Regards, Patrick
