I have a 2000 Ford F150 V8 4.6l manual transmission. These transmissions are beasts and very well made. I have 326,700 miles on my truck that my dad gave me as he bought it brand new from the factory. He drove it all highway miles, always kept up with maintenance, always took it to the dealership if there was a recall. I received it from him with about 250,000 miles on it. It still has all the original major working parts on it. Only minor repairs have been made like O2 sensor, fuel pump, etc... It just a couple of months ago started to make noises when disengaging the clutch(probably throw out bearing), so am going to probably have to put a clutch kit in it. The transmission seems fine as there hasn't been any signs that it's failing. Crossing my fingers that it's just the clutch when the family mechanic takes a look at it. Thanks for posting this video. 👍

Great story & thanks for sharing. If you have to get into the transmission, the syncro friction material is what wears. Unfortunately, they're not available OEM new. The aftermarket replacements don't look to be the same.

I had a 1999 F150 v6 I bought from new. sold it in 2019 My tranny was hard to shift into 3rd after 20K miles. Was still good to drive when I sold at 150K. The syncros were worn by my wife after only 1 day trying to shift my tranny for me. She never touched it after that. I see why. The syncro looks like brass.

Some people downshift, cramming the trans into the lower gear. It wears the friction lining off the inside of the syncro. Oops.

Thank you! part of the reason I havent torn down my noisy unit (was run low on oil) was lack of garage space, but it was mostly lack of info!

That's great! Glad this video helped. Make sure to shim the input shaft plate properly.

That was a fun watch, thanks for the video. Figured I'd learn how to rebuild mine one day so I could swap my truck to a 4x4 cause I'm also a sucker for pain... Doesn't seem that bad from this though.

Go for it. It's my 2nd time rebuilding one of these. I rushed through shimming the first time and ended up with a noisy gearbox, FYI.

Do you know the distance from the edge of the bell housing (Block mating surface) to the end of the tailshaft cap/spacer. I want to change my E4OD for the M5OD-R2 and wanted to know if I would need new driveshafts.

4th is 1:1 and is achieved by locking the input shaft to the main shaft at the front. Good video though!

Some M5OD have a small gear in the tail housing. This one has an electronic speed pickup. It senses the toothed wheel.

hi will it be possible to put the m5od r2 transmission instead of the automatic transmission to the windsor 351 on a 94 ford econoline? Is there room in the crankshaft for the transmission input shaft bearing?

I can't tell you. When it comes to wrenching on cars, I'm just a weekend hack who enjoys an amazing mechanism. Best to ask on a Ford forum. Many of those people know every detail. Good luck!

I got one. Do you find that the 06 version of this manual transmission is better designed that the version that came out in 98

The synchro friction rings from earlier models were slightly different. Both appear to give long life.

@@nickydoes Anyway to get them in bronze instead? Thanks!
