Thanks so much! I bought the in-motion pro underarm based on your review and they've been amazing. I just started using crutches and feel much more capable on them, and it really helped with shoulder/elbow pain. Just a heads up, it looks like they changed the spring in the past year or so to a quieter closed design, and they sell replacement shocks for about 16USD/each.

Good to know! Hurray for quieter replacements! Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely check those out. I'm glad to hear my video was helpful and the new crutches have been working well for you already 🙌

Thank you so much for the information! I laughed pretty hard when you talked about open cuff not being for you. That’s exactly what led me to be in the market to upgrade. Buy nice or buy twice is so true! Thank you 🙏 I feel so much more informed now and think ill try the in motions.

I remember writing this script and thinking, "how can I say 'I hate open cuffs' in a nice way?" 😄 I'm so glad to hear you found this information helpful! I've had a few people tell me they bought the in-motion pros and they really liked them. I hope you do too!

I really appreciate the reviews. I found out i tore something in my knee recently and recovery might be long. The docs didnt tell me to get crutches, but im being bad and not taking time off work. Therefore I feel like i should get crutches for weight bearing 😅

Good call! Always a good idea to support your body 👍 Forearm crutches are SO much better than underarm crutches and I think more people should use them for temporary injuries too, not just long term disabilities. Hope you make a smooth and full recovery!

You Rock Sister! Thank you for the real world experience using this type of crutch. I’ve been using a walking stick along with e-stim to lift my foot. My left side doesn’t work very well with my brand of multiple sclerosis. Like you, I have been stubborn to rely on external devices. Maintaining your interests is so important to quality of life. I have ordered a used forearm crutch to try before deciding a long term device. Greg

Thanks so much for this info. I have arthritis in my lower back that's inoperable and the only thing I can use is forearm crutches to avoid being in a wheelchair. They got me Drive brand ones and they're really uncomfortable. I wish I knew about the inmotion pros before I got these but sadly with insurance limitations I'm stuck with these the next 2 years.

You're so welcome! Ugh sorry you found it late though. That's frustrating insurance won't pay for new crutches for another two years. It's so hard to know which mobility aid to choose when you're new to them! I hope your next pair of crutches are a better fit for you.

I have the Cool Crutches you mentioned but I put a Velcro Stap around it instead of the the rubber which makes it easy to wrap around different thicknesses of Sweaters, Jackets, or Coats. I tried the closed cuff type, but my sleeves kept getting pushed up my arms. For convenience, I mounted water bottle holders (meant for bikes) below each handle, to carry Water and a container of Nuts.

Those are both such great ideas. I've been joking about needing a cup holder for my crutches- I hadn't even thought about looking into the ones for bikes 🙌 Thank you for sharing!

@@disabledinthewild Yes indeed! Water Bottle Holders will come with bolts that screw into a bike frame. But don't drill holes into your poles. Just use plastic Cable Ties (some people call them Zap-Straps).

I have the same in motion crutches. Over all, I think they are very good. SideStix are definitely the premium crutches. And just like you, I also have that short distance battle with using mobility aids……😵‍💫

Right?! The struggle is real. My husband is always having to remind me to use my crutches for short trips. When I showed him this video and it got to the part where I'm saying that I really should use crutches for short distances, he said, "that's a smart lady on screen, you need to listen to her!" 😄

@@lisas64 I double checked and they come with these tips: millennialmedical.com/product/in-motion-lifecrutch-tips/ They're removable though so I wonder if you'd be able to buy the tornado tips separately and put them on the in motion pros?

Thanks for this info... looking to get crutches for the first time on the days where I need a little extra support :) The crutches in the $50 range here usually have closed cuffs, I wonder if it's a regional thing.

@@disabledinthewild Hello, back again, might be getting crutches soon - I'm eyeing the In Motion Pros as per your recommendation, but I'm also seeing the 7G Ergobaums in search results and wondering if you (or anyone you knew) had experience with them? They're stacked with features but look pretty bulky (and potentially heavy). EDIT: Um... oh dear. Shipping for the in motion pros is $370. I think I need another option.

I currently have some metal drugstore-ish crutches. Honestly, yeah, they are kinda loud, but they work! I just don’t like how my cuffs have resistance but sometimes it’s useful.

I have been using the In Motion Pros for about five years. I've replaced lots of parts and they are so beat up I'm ready to replace them. I agree about the noise though. What do you think of Ergobaum 7G? I did try the M+D Combosticks and could just not make them work for me. I feel unstable in the 90 degree mode and the handgrips are at a bad angle in forearm mode. I'm also considering smartCRUTCHes, which like the Cool Crutches, they are customizable. Sidesticks look great, but they aren't in my price range.

Nice! That's awesome you've been able to use the in motion pros with replaceable parts for five years. I wish I could be helpful regarding the other crutches but I unfortunately don't have any experience with them. I've heard great things about ergobaum though- it seems to be a really popular crutch. I hadn't heard of smart crutches before- what an interesting crutch design, and how cool that the cuff part can have a colorful pattern on it! Hopefully another crutch user will read your comment and have insight on these crutches. Also, I totally agree about the M+D combo sticks- the angle would be awkward and uncomfortable for me too.

Great explanation and reviews! No experience with forearm crutches since they are not available in our country. This forces me to stick to my rollator when I need to walk a bit more. The upside is I can sit anywhere; the downside is I cannot go walk on uneven terrain. I will be trying out my sturdy hiking sticks again now that I got gloves similar to the ones you recommended in one of your previous videos. Regular crutches are no good if I need to do anything with my hands besides holding them. Also shock absorbers would come in very handy since I do use them for weight bearing.

Do they have lofstrand crutches or Canadian crutches? Forearm crutches can be called this too

It's so disappointing that forearm crutches aren't available in your country. I hope the hiking sticks give your body the support it needs. I'm glad I was at least able to help out with the gloves suggestion! Definitely let me know how all that goes- I'd love to hear if you find any helpful tips/tricks for people who don't have access to forearm crutches.

@@smallslowstep Thank you so much for the info! I found a pair of Canadian crutches I could order from abroad. Unfortunately they do not have the shock absorbers, so I would find it hard to justify the cost of them + postage.

@@disabledinthewild Even the gloves were hard to find. Now that I have them, I can't wait for the rain to stop to try them out. Hiking sticks were great, but gave me blisters almost immediately. Hopefully the gloves will stop my palms from slipping on the handles. As for the hiking sticks, I found it hard to find any that were sturdy enough. The ones that I bought were the only sturdy ones I could find in our capital, and they seem to be discontinued :( I can kind of understand it, since most people do not use it in place of crutches. Yet going downhill all hiking sticks should bear a lot of weight. From what I heard, they tend to break which can be extremely dangerous even for able-bodied people.

you think these would be good to use since I have back pain because of scoliosis? I can't stand that long without pain and I've been looking into some possible options
@disabledinthewild
@disabledinthewild 9 ай бұрын
Hi! Sorry for the super delayed response. I can only speak from my own experience, but crutches have helped me with a few different things. I developed SI joint issues in addition to my other leg issues, and the crutches make a huge difference in my SI joint pain. I can walk much farther and longer without setting off my SI joint pain because the crutches relieve the pressure/weight of carrying my whole body. So I could see the potential for crutches to help scoliosis symptoms, but it's so hard to say. I would first definitely check with a doctor to make sure it wouldn't be harmful to try. I've heard some people say the crutches were too hard on their shoulders/upper body, so I'm unsure how they would affect someone with scoliosis. Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes if you decide to try them.

My son has the Side Stix and they are great. They have opened up for him 5-6 mile hikes. He is weight bearing on these and he gets wrist pain after 2-3 miles. The pain is actually around the front of the hand around the thumb into the wrist. Have you experienced this and have you come upon anything thing the helps?
@disabledinthewild
@disabledinthewild Ай бұрын
Sidestix are awesome 🙌 I'm happy to hear they have helped your son on long distance hikes. I don't personally have experience with reducing wrist/thumb pain, as I don't often walk far enough to trigger that type of pain, but I have wondered if strength training exercises for the hands and wrists in between hikes would help, or perhaps taking breaks while hiking to rest and/or do some thumb/wrist stretches. I also wonder if anyone has tried wearing some sort of wrist brace to make sure the hand stays in a neutral position for those longer hikes. I'm not sure if that would help or hinder overall to be honest. Anyway, if I hear from anyone who has had success in reducing that type of pain, I will pass that info along!
