In this video Cindy, physical therapist with Adaptive Equipment Corner reviews a product called the SmartCrutch. This video won't review the differences between axillary crutches (the ones that go under the arms) and forearm crutches, but be sure to click here, Crutches: Underarm or Forearm • Crutches: Underarm or ... to check that out as well.
What is the SmartCrutch?
The SmartCrutch is a forearm crutch with features that allow for improved adjustability and versatility, which improves individual customization and comfort.
Who Can Use the SmartCrutch?
Anyone with a leg injury
Anyone with a neurological or musculoskeletal disorder
Anyone with generalized lower extremity weakness needing additional support
All crutches take practice for safe use and a degree of upper body strength, though forearm crutches tend to require a bit more upper body strength than axillary crutches.
SmartCrutch Features:
Adjustable forearm platform from 15-90 degrees
Memory foam padded forearm trough/rubberized hand grip
Off set hand grips specific to Left and Right
3 length settings for hand grip
3 cuff sizes, multiple colors and designs
Junior sizes up to adult 6'7" height (see specifications for further details)
Sold in singles or pairs
Multiple crutch tip styles
The adjustability of the SmartCrutch allows for weight distribution off of the hands/wrists, back through the forearm, greatly improving comfort.
Overall Product Review
Although the SmartCrutch is more expensive than the "typical" axillary and forearm crutches, after use of the SmartCrutch, we certainly would recommend taking a look at this product when considering length of time to be spent on the crutches as well as maintaining the best level of comfort for the rest of your body during the process. Don't forget to take a look at Crutches: Underarm or Forearm • Crutches: Underarm or ...

Can you walk or do you have to swing. I’m waiting for right hip replacement but need to walk upright. A walking stick makes me lean to the right and bend over. Help

Janet, thank you for your question. No, you don’t have to swing. You can walk with these with the crutches just giving you additional support as you do. You can advance the crutches then take a step with each foot one at a time , right leg first or step forward with right leg, left crutch at same time, then L leg, right crutch at the same time. It just depends on how much support you are needing for your right leg at this time. Hope this was helpful. Speedy recovery after surgery! ✌🏻❤️😊. AECorner.com

Hi Janet. I had two hip replacements 2013, two months apart and you walk with them the same as the old onces. Big difference is that due it’s unique design, it is far easier to get moving and get your moblity back much faster. Also due to the fact that it is so comfortable to walk en the design assists with a natural walking pattern, your rehab will be speeded up as well, because you will be able to get to ‘normal’ sooner. Highly highly recommended and the few extra dollars worth!

Wouldn't be without mine. The cost is well worth it especially if you can't cope with conventional crutches like me. I have been using them since 2015 and am now 68yo.

How did you keep the pads on. Mine won't stick at all, and all i am left with is a sticky mess pulling on my arm hairs.

I would have liked seeing them demonstrated as support for balance for both legs... I use forearm crutches but alternate left leg/right arm, right leg/left arm, as one does in a normal gait.

Carol Smith-Kilgore, thank you for your suggestion. We agree, there are several other walking patterns that are used with forearm crutches which we certainly need to add to the list of videos to address. Hope our site is something you will share with others in need. Take care! ✌🏻❤️ AECorner.com

I bought Smart Crutches from the company. Pros: Smart Crutches are sturdy and easy to adjust. I feel supported when using them. Cons: The part that goes around the arm is ridiculously large and made from hard plastic. If your arms are huge or you wear bulky shirt sleeves, they might work. But I wear short sleeves most of the time, and the hardness of the plastic is painful had causes bruising. A better design might have a softer arm strap, maybe with a Velcro type strap or something a bit more flexible or simply not so big and hard. I cannot stress enough, the arm part is uncomfortable and painful. The rep told me to adjust the arms, and I tried that, but the whole point of the design for me was not to put pressure on my wrists, but the only way to avoid the arm bruising, is to put pressure on the hands and wrists. I might as well get regular canes. Something like a replaceable blood pressure cuff could possibly work well. It would be easy to put on and take off, easy to fit, and it would be soft and easy to use. Foam Pads and Glue: No matter how much glue used, the pads won't stay on. The crutches come with pads and a sheet of 3M glue that you have to put on yourself. When applying the glue, half of it stays on the paper and the rest sticks to the crutch, which makes for an uneven coat. It is very sticky and messy to work and sticks to everything but what it was intended for. I called about the problem, but the company simply sent me more glue and pads, but the pads have no intention of staying on. Not so SmartCrutch, I REPEAT: THE GLUE DOES NOT STICK TO RUBBER PADS! After the company sent me more glue and pads, even though I had explained to them that that is not going to make the pads stick, that this is a design flaw, I never heard back from them. By this time, it was past the time I could return them for a refund. (I wish I have used Amazon for easier return...lesson learned) Conclusion: Smart Crutches are sturdy, and I like the overall design, it's just those useless pads and hard plastic. The pads are just more trash for the landfill. They need to be replaced with something that stays on, and something that will protect my arms from the hard plastic or get rid of the hard plastic and make a new design. Because the company was no help, I am trying to find a way to make these work. I'm planning on buying some Velcro and lamb's wool (real or not) as padding. I will find a way to make them work. But, when I go out in public with these crutches and people ask me, "Do you like them better than...?" It's a flat, "No, get the regular ones and save your money." I want so much to tell people what great crutches these are, but I can't. Between the hard plastic that digs into my arms, the useless pads, the sticky every time I touch the arms straps, and no help from customer service...save your money. Or get them from Amazon and try them yourself. To the company: Listen to your customers and fix the padding issue and redesign the big bulky plastic arm strap with something like a blood pressure cuff and could have an amazing product. These crutches have great potential, but I have to give them a D- for the final product. Don't waste your money.
