In the UK, with a central heating setup (gas boiler), the air intake is an inner pipe that is surrounded by a larger outer exhaust pipe. Basically air is drawn in and pre-heated by the exhaust gas - simple heat exchanger. You could try constructing or "welding" a simple exhaust heat exchanger.

Don't put the intake inside, cold air has more oxigen then hot air. It should burn better with cold air. Also never connect a pipe that goes to the combustion chamber, to the inside of your van. You never know what could happen wile you sleep. If the heater fan stops working, fumes come out of the intake
@carlacowling17893 жыл бұрын
I worried about that too. There's surely a safety reason why you're supposed to vent fresh air in!
@jeremywylie29363 жыл бұрын
The diesel heaters have a in and exhaust out for the burn chamber. They are through his floor to outside. They also have a intake air in and heated air out. Air in at one end of plastic case. Heat out the other. The two parts are not connected in any way. So having it recirculate in and out of main is better them sucking cooler air from under bed
@frspp3 жыл бұрын
Yup I think there should anyways be a fresh air intake as companion for roof fan which is exhaust. Fresh air intake through the heater when it is off must be quite little. Anyways interesting find that the output is same no matter if it taking cold air out or recirculating inside air. Heater must use more fuel and power to make cold air warm.

The diesel heater using an outside air source is the safest design as it provides fresh air for combustion and doesn't consume the oxygen inside the van. Home gas and oil furnaces work the same way. The van may not be sealed enough for that to be a problem as enough fresh air could leak in, though modern vehicles are a lot more sealed than older vehicles.
