Glen, Nice drawknife. End of year, I owe you a couple compliments. Over the last year I've purchased some tools from you. Your bending jig, guillotine tool with some extra dies, your set of top tools, a touchmark and several various tongs. ALL of the tools are working beautifully. Very durable, still holding form in the heat and my abuse. Prices are all reasonable as well. Many thanks for your attention to detail and quality. Best wishes for a prosperous and happy 2021.

When I was taught by an old blacksmith on making a draw knife; one thing he showed was to fuller in a groove right behind the cutting edge. I’d say about 1/2” in your case. That way; I’m guessing would reduce the height of the back of the bevel; thus giving you a keener edge and an easier cut. I’ll have to dig around and see what mine have.
@gstongs

That's a very good tip and one that would save on me having to grind a lot to get the proper angle. I'll try to remember to give that a try. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Glen, It looks like the angle of the bevel on your drawknife is a little bit too steep. I own a drawknife that is half the thickness of yours and the bevel tapers even further back. Maybe a less steep angle would aid you in cutting those harder woods ? Anyway great video as always and a happy new year to you :)

Happy New Year Glen! Quick question. Start to finish, how long did the draw knife actually take? As a beginner blacksmith I find it frustrating how long it takes me to complete projects sometimes. I think my mind expects a much quicker process. Thanks for the great videos!
@gstongs
@gstongs 3 жыл бұрын
I can almost guarantee you that when you see projects being done on KZfaq, that the completion time is longer than what is actually shown in most cases. This drawknife probably took me about 2 hours total. Don't obsess about how long it takes for any one project, speed will come with repetition/experience. Thanks and have a great 2021.

Glen, your anvils look like recent manufacture (very smooth with no dings). Are anvils produced over there? Are they readily available? How are prices compared to the states?
@gstongs
@gstongs 3 жыл бұрын
My main anvil is about 5 years old. I use it everyday but don't abuse it. There are a few dings and dents but the camera angle makes that hard to see. There might be some cast iron anvils being manufactured here but my anvils are my own designs which I had made. Thanks and have a great 2021.

Was that like 3 inches per handle, and 4 inches for the blade? I need a good draw knife and just stumbled on a toolbox of old files from a deceased estate. Edit. It looks that way, just confirming measurements.
@ACat1255
@ACat1255 3 жыл бұрын
There is a relatively large amount of variation in drawknife proportions so I wouldn't sweat too much about it. If anything, I would make the blade as long as you can while leaving adequate material for the handles. This lets you take a long slicing cut that is needed in certain situations. I have made a short one like Glen's first one before and while I like it for the forging I did (first successful forge weld of high carbon steel to mild steel body) I don't actually like using it for woodworking compared to my longer bladed one.
@whisperzzar3321
@whisperzzar3321 3 жыл бұрын
@@ACat1255 My primary purpose for the draw knife is fashioning handles for my knives, hammers, axes etc. so most of the wood pieces will be only short to a couple feet at most. Ive seen other 'Tubers make them but seemed too small for me, this one looked about right.edit. grats on the forge weld success, I havent been game to try that yet P )

Nice work. I would do two changes. Open up the angles of the handles a bit. Those are close to 90°, not really the natural angle of your hands. I also would polish the underside of the blade, if not polish at least remove file cuts. The draw knife would cut smoother.
@gstongs
@gstongs 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. As it stands, I find the handles are comfortable for me but opening them a bit might be even better. And I definitely need to flatten/smooth the underside more. Have a great 2021.
