Our journey to Raven the Hermitage, a family-owned guest house near Leh market, was a voyage into the heart of Ladakhi culinary culture. Nestled just 2km away from the bustling market and in close proximity to the iconic Sankar Gonpa, this hidden gem has been a sanctuary for travelers since its establishment in 2018.
Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Dr. Wangchuk Katpa and his family. Our culinary adventure began with the enticing aroma of mutton mok mok with chef Shanu.
Next on the menu was chutagi, a traditional Ladakhi dish that showcases the ingenuity and flavors of the region. Handmade wheat flour pasta, uniquely shaped, was served in a hearty gravy brimming with locally sourced vegetables, aromatic spices and the richness of local dried cheese.
As we savoured each morsel chutagi, Dr. Wangchuk regaled us with tales of Ladakhi culinary heritage, offering insights into the ingredients and cooking techniques passed down through generations.
Our culinary exploration culminated in the paktsa markhu, a traditional Ladakhi sweet dish that delighted with its simplicity and warmth. Boiled wheat flour dough balls, tossed in butter, powdered chhurpi and sugar, offered a sweet conclusion to our culinary adventure.
The experience at Raven the Hermitage was not just about the food; it was a celebration of culture, tradition and the warm hospitality of the Katpa family.
