If you have any pressed flowers or leaves you are interested in seeing me color enhance, let me know what the botanical is in the comments. If I have that on hand and can color enhance it I will put it on my demo list:-) Thank you for watching, and be sure to watch the companion video where I use a couple of these formulas to play around with for coloring some leaves kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMyBq8mUrNy6fKM.html Also, would love to hear if any of you color enhance and what you do...

Love all this Knowledge! Thank you so much for sharing! Do you have any specific tips on tenting white flowers to keep their longevity? For the most part, I am able to press white flowers out to really pretty whites; however, I worry about the long term of effects them aging and browning. Looking to tent white flowers to a natural white!
@emsplace
@emsplace 4 жыл бұрын
Hi AC, yes when you get the whites to come through good, sometimes they can turn to cream or brown over time. Taylor from another video has a similar tenting question. Here is what I posted that may help: Try a white fabric paint and dilute with mediums like what is talked about in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJOhh8mSq96whoU.html and check out the playlist kzfaq.info/sun/PLxKiESd8bksOod-3Fe7kS4jzcXpFiorRA Hard to use a marker since there generally there isn't a white. There are paint pen markers - I have not tried that in white, but may be interesting to test. Play around with different white mediums and see if any of them give you a result you like. I know what you mean about white botanicals and staying true to their color. Thank you for sharing and for watching! Em

Hi Em! These videos are amazing! I preserve flowers in silica gel and use epoxy resin to preserve flowers in their natural shape. I'm attempting to apply this technique to my craft. Do you know if Formula with the PPA is able to be sprayed on? I'm wondering if the mist would give a more natural tint. Thanks again for saving me tons of hours and money through your experimentation!!
@emsplace

Hi, I also dry flowers in silica and use them for making things. I actually have an air brush and air brush paint that works really well. But that is a more expensive way to go. I am not sure what you would use to spray the colorant. A spray bottle? I would try what you are thinking to see if it works. I have even used a kids marker sprayer with sucess which is water base markers. That colorant would work for resin. I find water base will not bleed in resin, where solvent or alcohol colorants will. Here is a video on that sprayer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adSWnpSb07zWp3U.html You can even dilute colorant and dip into the color and try that. Really, experimentation is key since all mediums and flower/leaves are different. For resin though, I would try to stay with a water based item. Also see the video for an idea of a dipping formula that would not be very expensive kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pamYqadpsJupZZc.html Thanks for watching and have fun:-) Em

Hi again Em! I have a question about color enhancing pressed red rose petals. They press so dark. Can one make them look bright red like fresh? Could you do a video experimenting with color enhancing pressed red roses? Thanks in advance!
@emsplace
@emsplace 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for the late reply... yes the darker red the rose the darker they will be when pressed. Perhaps try some pink ones and see what happens. Once they are super dark it is hard to color enhance them lighter. Play around and see if lighter roses give you more options. Thank you for watching:-)

Hi Em. Many thanks for this video. Probably a very easy question for you to answer (apologies for my ignorance), but I wonder if you wouldn't mind explaining what the purpose of the rubbing alcohol and white vinegar is? What is the function they serve? I'm presuming it's something to do with combating water repellant surfaces, but did not want to assume. Kind regards, Laura.
@emsplace
@emsplace 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, I use rubbing alcohol instead of water since it dries faster. Usually I use the 70% rubbing alcohol which does have 30% water, but have used other percents too. Vinegar is reputed to help set color in the fabric world but is not really necessary. Vinegar can clump when using with some paints, so always test first if using vinegar. When all else fails, I will go to alcohol markers and inks and see how that goes. Hope this helps, Em

Hi Em. I find myself coming back to your videos very often and asking questions. Again I would like to deeply thank you for answering in your comment section. You are so educational and it is helping so many. I have been experimenting with India Ink. Have you ever tried this on your pressed flowers? I’ve been using it for white roses pedals to enhance and minamize browning. It works and looks beautiful but I have running into an issue. Before the ink dries, the rose pedals begin to curl up. I have no idea why! I have add drops of rubbing alcohol attempting to see if it will help dry it quicker. It doesn’t help. Do you have any idea why I am running into this issue? Have you ever found that your flowers curl up when you add color? Or India ink? All the best to you! Again thank you so much!
@emsplace
@emsplace 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for visiting the channel:-) In regard to India Ink, I have not used that. There could be a number of reason why it curls having to do with too much water or the botanical doesn't like the India Ink formula for some reason. Or, perhaps you are using too much ink. When I apply wet medium to flowers I make sure the brush doesn't have too much colorant on it, and draw the excess out/off the botanical as I apply. Sometimes in my videos you will even see me use my finger for a final swipe off. Once the botanical has dried after applying the colorant, I will place between paper (copy paper is fine) and then back in a book or magazine until ready to use. That can help to get them flat again. Em

Hi Em! Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing your knowledge! I have a question about white flowers...how can you make them white again after they dry cream? Would you just use a white fabric paint and your formulas? Have you experimented with white color enhancement? Thanks in advance!
@emsplace
@emsplace 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Erin, yes I have played with white and used the fabric paints and the formulas. You can also try gesso. White is a hard one depending upon the botanical and such. Play around with different dilutions and see how it goes:-) I have even used a spray paint for something that was entirely white, or where the center wasn't and then just used the fabric paint for the center (for example where the center was yellow). In that case a quick drying white satin or matte for example. Thank you for watching, Em

Hello Em, thank you for all the tips, they have been really useful... I recently started pressing flowers and yesterday colored some Hydrangeas to preserve their beautiful blue color... because they lost some color after a week being pressed. I used watercolors and powder pastels with water to color them, they looked beautiful but i founded out today that the flowers got tiny brown spots through night :( Should i add the vinegar and alcohol in order to prevent this fading or which extra step do you reccommend me to color my flowers and preserving their color? I dont have any mediums or sophisticated materials to color them, thanks!
@emsplace
@emsplace 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, appreciate the comment. My thought on the hydrangea colorant is the water. Personally I don't use watercolors or paints diluted with just water because it is too "wet" and does not dry fast enough. Perhaps that is the problem. Try diluting paints with rubbing alcohol instead - see my color enhancement playlist to see if any of those ideas help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9NnbLaFtLmlqHU.html In any event, be sure the flowers are dry before putting back in storage. I have color enhanced may hydrangea using fabric paint/dye diluted with the mediums talked about in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJOhh8mSq96whoU.html Hope this helps and thank you for watching, Em

Hi i am new to all this and your videos are so helpful! Thank you! I am just wondering, and I know this is so silly to ask, but why not just use paint directly onto the pressed flowers? Why does there have to be a formula used to dilute the paint? Thank you for the education!!!!

Hi, I do use paints in the form of dye, fabric paints and markers. There really are no rules - just experiment and see what works for the botanical you want to color and if you like the results. It is all a personal decision based on your artistic vision and desired outcome. Above all, have fun and thank you for watching, Em

@emsplace
@emsplace Жыл бұрын
Hi Helen, that is interesting. I have never had that happen. I did have someone say once that using vinegar with a brand of fabric paint (can't remember the brand) caused the mixture to curdle/clump. Since manufactures all have their own formulas, be sure to try a small test first. I plan to do more videos in the future of combinations I use and/or have tried that work to hopefully help in this regard. And from your experience, sounds like not using a good brush when experimenting in case unexpected results occur. Tray a small dab without vinegar (just say a 70% or 50% rubbing alcohol) to see if that makes a difference. The point is to try to find a way to cut down on the "water" when thinning colorants, and experimentation is often needed. Let me know if you find someithing that works and what kind of fabric paint you were using. Thank you for watching, Em

@@emsplace thank you so much for replying. The brand is Tulip fabric paint. I will try it just with the rubbing alcohol and see how that works. What is the purpose of the vinegar? Is it all just to do with thinning?
@emsplace
@emsplace Жыл бұрын
@@helenharrison6790 Someone told my to include vinegar many years ago and fabric dyes often mention it as a way to help set the dye. In reality, I am moving away from vinegar for the flowers since I don't really think it is necessary. Now that you said Tulip, I think that may be the brand the other person had curdle/clump on them. Perhaps they used a higher percent of vinegar or one of the other Tulip formulas since they make different products. I have a Tulip fabric paint I use and have not had an issue with using rubbing alcohol. Let me know how it goes and thanks for the reply, Em

PS, sometimes if the paint is a translucent rather than an opaque, thinning my not even be necessary for some botanicals, or just a drop or two of alcohol.
