DIY Ammo Can Panniers (44's Donut Vault)

No matter what motorcycle you’ve got, there’s a way to rig up some saddle bags. The ammo can method is a cheap way to build a safe, sealed and secure storage solution. 44’s had enough of his superiors pilfering his powdered possessions, so he’s doing a weld-free installation on the VanVan. Special thanks to our friends and neighbors at Cream Pony in North Vancouver!

There is a fine line between artistic and absurd and I think FortNine is pretty close to crossing that line. The videos seem to be evolving from practical to just plain goofy, which is OK if your goal is entertainment rather than information.

@LTVoyager: Some channels would have made a tedious half hour vid on converting those ammo boxes. This conveys enough inspiration in a few minutes for any DIYer to make something similar,,, all the while raising a smile with their donutty antics.

Ryan and 44, you're killing it. This is everything: the focus shifts, the split screens, the finger swipe at 1:35 perfectly in sync with the music. How can a short instructional feel like a music video, an 80s montage and a feature film all at once. HOW?!?

I’ve watched other channels that add a new character into the mix, and it usually degrades the experience for me. I understand it makes it easier for the production team and the channel, but the reason I started watching those channels in the first place was because I loved the character, and the atmosphere. 44 is one of the rare editions that only adds to the viewing experience, and solidifies in my mind the fact that this channel knows what it’s doing. I applaud the production team for the marvelous work that they continually provide for my viewing pleasure.

Thinking outside the box, simple solution, and presented in a clear artistic way. I like the voiceless 44 as his actions are communicated wonderfully clear, though all of this for Donuts was a kind of ridiculous, but that was the humor of it. I would give you three thumbs up, but I am blessed by birth with only two… and since this episode spoke to the members of this channel so loudly I made up a new word just for FortNine: “FortNinetissimo”… lol

Those are awesome panniers! The American expression "Give 'em the whole nine yards" comes from ammo boxes: if you'd remove the original belted ammo and laid it out, the length of that belt is nine yards. Ammo boxes on a vehicle hide a lethal secret if you store actual ammo in them for a very long time: The gunpowder in each bullet is made of super stable nitro cellulose, shaped into little grains or tiny flakes. Driving over bumps shakes the gunpowder around inside the casing, and over time can turn it into powder. Nitro cellulose in powdered form has a dramatic increase in burn rate, instantly transforming your rifle into a pipe bomb that you are holding next to your face.

Ever since I heard of this channel some 3-4 years ago, it has yet to disappoint. When they said it was probably the best motorcycling channel out there by one of the most reputable reviewers out there I understood that I had been missing out. Being disabled now for over 10 years, with the only thing I watch regularly being MotoGP tough less since Rossi stopped racing, this is such a breath of fresh air. Love and God bless from a previous MC mechanic(in my youth) from equally winter un-ridable Norway....

I have a 2017 Triumph Street Scrambler with the rack on the left for a fancy leather Triumph pannier .. I took the leather thing off and made a wooden box with a top load hinge that can flip open leaving an open top .This means in nice weather I can cary my 5 string banjo with me and when it is cold or rainy more layers and a rain suit fit in it safe all closed up :) . Being an older guy who got his A licence in Wales back in 1970 I have put a GB sticker on the box (a gift from my coworkers when I got the A level) and a RAF Rondel from WW2 . The box is also green :) .Being in New England people are intrigued with the set up and ask lots of questions ... I bet I could cary 2 dozen donuts in the thing .. No lock Ryan :)

Another simpler latch lock. Drill a hole into the box at the center of the hole in the latch. Put a bolt through the hole from the inside and nut it down. Drill a hole through the end of the bolt for the pad lock. This would work better on a latch with a much smaller hole in it though.

BTW, Harbor Freight carries .32 and .50 cal sized, watertight, metal ammo cans for lame guys like me that have never come across the real things. I bought mine for around $12/ea after seeing a KZfaqr post a video of one submerged in his bathtub with a light and camera inside! Sold! Should look good on my camouflage "Pine Green" RE Himalayan, if I ever stop riding it long enough to install my $12 cans. Gotta take advantage of Royal Enfield's 3-year unlimited mileage warranty!

Harbor Freight carries ammo cans of different sizes in metal and much lighter plastic. Both are cheap as dirt. Between the $50 pannier racks and $24 for two, heavy duty .50 cal, watertight metal ammo cans, I'm happy to once again "beat the system," cheap man that I am. I think, like highway crash bars on a cruiser, they may very very save a leg or exhaust some day. Bought a smaller pair of .32 cal cans for the front panniers on the front of my RE Himalayan. I think they may also save a leg, light, gad tank, etc, if I ever go down. Plus, the Army Green color looks awesome, IMO, with the camoflauge "Pine Green" color on the bike.

3:17 Oh, so THAT'S how you're supposed to secure those wire-connector things! My dad and I would always just strip the wires a bit more and twist them together

twist-solder-heat shrink is definitely the longest lasting solution. But those solder-seal wire connectors are not far behind and sooooo convenient. ~RF9

I'm doing something very similar, adding two large 20mm ammo cans (each large enough for 1500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition) to the headache rack on my 4WD Hijet Japanese mini truck to use as tool boxes. I'm adding remote keyless entry to the little truck so the tool boxes will lock and unlock with the driver and passenger doors.

Great team you guys! You made something very amazing. Beautiful balance between, suspense, humor, detail, asterisks. You took your typical attention to detail to another level. So clear, so creative, so easy to watch, very intelligent. You created the most unique canal for the community. Yes! For all of us that ride, fix, buy, talk, or dream about riding, owning, traveling on a motorcycle. Also Great the short videos. Amazing work. Good luck, Best wishes. What a blast. I am always eager for your videos.

As others said already, it's brilliant. The music choice is top notch too, mostly gets overlooked, but a really important part of it.
