Long Ago, Not Far Away
Dusk and Enjoiner Rue learn Demerzel’s origin and true purpose. Tellem’s plans for Gaal take a dark turn. On Terminus, Day confronts Dr. Seldon.
Episode 9 changes everything going into the Season 2 finale. It’s a packed episode with a mini-movie narrated by Cleon I about how Demerzel (Laura Birn) became the closest aide serving Empire. Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann) and Enjoiner Rue (Sandra Yi Sencindiver) are horrified when they learn the truth. On Ignis the drowned Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) returned to save Gaal (Lou Llobell) from Tellem Bond (Rachel House).
Brother Day (Lee Pace) decides he wants to be the Cleon who chose peace and goes to Terminus to meet with their leadership. After discovering what was happening at the church he confronts Dr. Seldon in the Vault. Things fall apart and after a battle in space, he decides to drop the Invictus on the planet to destroy it and bring an end to the First Foundation.
The Cleonic Dynasty - • Foundation: The Geneti...
Kalle and Oona’s World - • Foundation Season 2 | ...
More than a century after the season one finale, tension mounts throughout the galaxy in “Foundation” season two. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of “Foundation” chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.

Thanks for doing the interview it was great to watch and confirmed/revealed many things floating in my mind leading into this final episode of the season. Goyer definitely had some issues with the mic/acoustics, the CC made up well enough however. I'm curious if we'll see any sign of the second foundation. there is that timeline lag between our two harry POVs and I'm wondering if there is a narrative purpose to this other than Hober Mallow.

Those terrible words "you're a sperm..." is an accurate appraisal of Day, IMO. This season, I initially believed him to be brave and intuitive. As the season progressed, it became obvious he was desperate if not hysterically insecure. I'm not certain if that is a good way to express it but the idea should be clear. Dermezel may be on the verge of breaking her bonds or meeting her doom. I don't believe it will come to that, her doom. I hope Dawn and Sareth aren't harmed.

I think giving Demerzel the Prime Radiant fulfills two functions for Dr. Seldon/Vault Hari, the 1st being it gets the snooping device away from him so the 2nd Foundation can't spy on him and he doesn't have to be running a control group, the 2nd being the 2nd Foundation gets to snoop on the true lever of power of the Empire and it puts it as a knife on Trantor like Yana wanted.

I'm pretty sure Harry is controlling what Day is seeing and hearing and let Day think that he attacked the ship and destroyed the planet. Dermerzel realized the illusion and let Day live it alone to see how far he would go.

If what we saw is truth, (David says the planet is gone) then Bel now has an actually reason to kill or betray Day. Day believes this to be an absolute triumph of his brilliance to out do the other Cleons and break the curse of Hari Seldon and to remind everyone of Empire’s strength. But Day mistakes military strength for the right to rule. And the reason for Imperial decline isn’t because of the “curse”, but because the Cleons have drove the people are at the breaking point and are ready for change. This was Day undoing himself and any respect the Cleons, and more directly he held with some at a time when he is now on his own. Day has created a situation where Empire starts to go down hill in a more obvious way from here on. It’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. He delved so deep into learning about Hari Seldon and his curse of Empire’s end that he made it all about himself Vs Seldon. Think of the first Star Wars movie. Having the Death Star destroy Alderaan seemed like a powerful move that should serve as a warning against rebellion. But that act lost the Empire a lot of support, and with the Death Star’s destruction, won the Rebellion a lot of support. Where this differs from Foundation is that Hari is the one with foresight, not the Cleons, and the Cleons top generals and allies have sketchy loyalties. Turning the whole scene into an illusion (an expensive cgi one), undoes that. The first Foundation is more than just a planet. It priesthood, and merchant/smugglers, and their partners and connections and influence throughout the outer territories.

@@freebird6591 I wager everyone on that planet is dead as a doornail. Foundation has always been about this issue of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few. If there's any problem with this series so far, it's that it's not done enough to indicate the scale of the empire and how many hundreds of thousands of world's and trillions of people are involved, making what happens with one single planet literally like a drop in the ocean. Seldon is willing to sacrifice on that scale for this concept of 'the greater good' even if it seems horrific. Imo the actual point is demorzel has the prime radiant, has been encouraged to 'make a better day', and we have certainly not seen the last of the spacers nor the effects that the destruction of foundation 1 will have across multiple worlds (remember they have seeded it as a religion across multiple world systems by now)

Asimov's Foundation is a jewel of sci-fy novels from the half of last century and this TV version needed to update to the current visual mean with its pros and cons. A very hearty thank you to Pete for garnering this interview. Having listened carefully to the interview I now have a better understanding of Goyer's take for the series. Everyone's comments are delightful to read (but I also see an inclination towards an echo chamber rather than debate). Still, I hope that everyone continues to take pleasure in the series. I, however, was left feeling more and more hollow as I sat and took some notes. I'll site only one example: Goyer said he felt that people had misread the books. This was surprising, in that the books have been selling for over 50 years, won the highest awards that can be offered, influenced many in career choices, and have been the subject of some wonderful debates on many levels. Really now - have we all been misreading the books for so many years? The series offers incredible sets, CGI and cinematography. But the writing lags. It is formulaic at a minimum which is a hallmark of this sort of storytelling, which is what Goyer excels at. This leaves any storyline dependent more on CGI then a coherent story. I do not fault this -- it is just my observation. It certainly makes a lot of money, which is the goal in the end. But pushing the series to 6, 7, or even 8 seasons leaves too much space to fill, and so we get long lines of space operas instead of SF. IMO, Goyer isn't quite the person to have brought Foundation to television. The main issue seems to be that the books are boring by todays standards - that they don't have enough "action" for the tasts of today's audience, and thus too hard to bring to the screen without a hard right turn. While I would beg to differ, I get it that today's audiences have come to expect the sort of things that we see in this series. This is not necessarily wrong -- it is entertainment, which is supposed to 'wow' - which it does aplenty.

Series is amazing so far, more pluses than minuses. Only minor peeves: 1. In my mind, i always imagined imperial distance in all the Empire scenes. Huge audience chambers, huge bedroom, reducing ppl to ants, juxtaposed with the Emperor being larger than life. So the current small palace, small bedroom, seems quaint. 2. Bel Riose should command from a position of larger than life, something like in a SW Super Star Destroyer kind of bridge. This is a different take on the soldiers of Empire. But the hubris, grandiose, power, intrigue, spot on. And Glawen's intrigue befits the court instead of front line soldier. 3. Trantor with its army of grey bureaucrats, and scheming aristocrats is just represented by a small group. Could have shown how Rue and Sareth themselves are commanding swathes of star systems with its own bureaucracy and hangers on, while the scheming and building intrigue in Cleon's court. 4. Foundation could have been more a rural university campus instead of this dirty origins, to show a little bit of 150 years of development. Otherwise, no problems with the plot twists and departures. All the Asimovian bits are there, and 20,000 years is plenty of time for technology indistinguishable from magic to develop, lost, and kept secret for Empire.

Pete and David, thanks so much for your wonderful commentary and fantastic show! I read these books over 50 years ago when I was a young boy! I have always loved it and it sent me on a road of loving scifi all my life. The changes you have made are thoughtful, and truly fantastic and I believe Asimov would have loved them all. Thank you both for making my life richer for engaging in this creative, wonderful work!!!

Given their mentalist abilities, I would love for Gaal & Salvor's mother/daughter relationship to grow in a way where they don't have to "talk" to talk to each other. It would be cool to see Gaal lead the Mentalists to take advantage of the galactic time delay they appear to have on Ignis. I am still wondering about Hari's home world version of Foundation. He and Raych were at first headed to Helios, a hidden planet.

Most probably the best Tv series I have ever seen and I have seen a lot over the past 50 years. Beautiful designed, adapted, directed, shot and acted. Worthy of many awards and accolades. Well done to you David and all your creative team. And a special shout out to Roxann Dawson on directing parts here in Ireland. Hope the weather was perfect for her and the crew! What a trip. What a voyage.

This channel is my favorite for the content produced. Sadly I was unable to watch this video due to the quality of audio. I tried turning up the volume and turning down the bass all the way and still couldn't understand most of what David was saying. I hope something can be done to improve the audio quality in the future. I understand that under the circumstance audio testing was probably limited if it was done at all. As always, much love to Pete for all his dedication and work.

I absolutely love the narration the characterisation of this show. I’m so grateful for the richness of the themes way beyond the books. My bet is that Demerzel personifies the great empress portrayed in the Palace. I would like to highlight that Hari Seldon is acting a lot like those unique people outside the canon of the psychohistory. Why this is not commented at all? My other big question at the end of episode 9 is who survived on Terminus.

Gaal was barely mentioned in this interview, while she is supposed to be the most intelligent people in the universe, even above and beyond Hari, she more often than not comes across as unlikable and incompetent where she needs to be put in her place, told off by Hari or slapped by Salvor. The best part of this show is the Cleonic Empire and its implications, Demerzel and Hari. Salvor has alot of potential as well.

Kalli engineered his clone body to survive because she is the radiant manifest externally. Or shes a psychic robot... with a physical and digital versions like Hari that has fused with the radiant. She handles the outliers until the second foundation can start doing it themselves further down the line. Antithesis of the Mule in every way except for influence and limited control.

@@luvcherry yes, that "cave lady" is a mystery. I was wondering if that was R.Daneel myself. Asimov wrote a lot about robots who's laws were circumvented. It always f them up, like R.Gisgard. That is, until Daneel wrote the Zeroth Law.

Thanks for a great interview. REQUEST: If you haven’t conducted the second interview yet, please include a few moments to discuss brother Constan. Although not as dramatic a protagonist as many of the more showy characters, I think having her there provided some great depth to make events seem real, and she was a wonderful foil for the Poly character (he gets my top rating this season for his portrayal!).

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your content. I have been a mostly silent viewer for about 2 years now and your videos are consistently insightful and sometimes point me to interesting shows that I may have missed otherwise. This is true for Foundation, back when Season 1 first came out. It is always interesting to get a second perspective on episodes, mostly with similar opinions, but sometimes pointing things out I missed. Showrunner interviews like this one really say a lot about how well you do those companion videos to episodes, because it shows how even the people behind the show see the value your videos provide. Commenting on a tv show isn't a difficult thing to do on paper, but delivering consistent high quality coverage that isn't just a retelling does take effort and some thought, like what to focus on and what to mostly ignore, as well as what to leave out to avoid potential spoilers when source material is sometimes part of the content. So in short, thank you for doing such a good job.
