This is a great episode. I love this discussion and I’d love to see more of these for the ITB podcast in between actual guests coming on.

Hunter hit the nail on the head at 17 min. Don't force a disc to beat in. Once it doesn't fly like it used to, youve unlocked a new shot and then you get a new one to replace that original flight

I think Hunter’s point about minimizing happening naturally is what it comes down to. Someone who has played long enough to know what they like and actually beat in enough discs can do this. Also, I prefer different molds in the same plastic. A teebird in star vs dx feels much more different to me than a teebird and leopard3 both in star. I think dx will soften a bit as it beats in, so I’m gonna keep trying it for a little while, but we’ll see

This was a great video! The original format started off exciting but lost steam. You guys should do more of these talking about things like: matching arm speed to disc speed, is glide real (Brodie), what slots to I actually need (test/track it in several rounds), do utility discs actually save strokes, etc.

Great video! One thing to add is that some manufacturers have different discs that are molded extremely similar to their counterparts in different stabilities. For example: Truth, EMac Truth, Verdict or Buzzz SS, Buzzz, Buzzz OS. Also, can’t forget the base plastic for upshot discs to stick in place!

Im definitely a mold minimalist but its tough now a days there's so much great plastic out there. TSA is slowly taking over my bag.

Touching on the MVP/Gyro question: A lot of MVP molds have an Axiom counterpart that's meant to mimic a beat-in [MVP]. The notion is that the Wrath is meant to be a beat-in Tesla, Crave is beat-in Servo, Hex is beat-in Reactor, etc. We can argue the Wrath/Tesla, but the Hex is absolutely a beat-in Reactor. I agree that it's just a question of time for mold minimalization, and I'm not convinced it's a goal to strive for. I throw a lot of Gyro, and I bagged a Hex when they first came out. I realized, though, my Reactor had beat in to the stage where it was just a Hex but better (at least for me). So, now I bag a newer stable Reactor and my old beat-in flippy Reactor. Likewise, I have a stable and an understable Crave. I didn't set out to accomplish those duplications, but my game and my discs evolved in such a way as to make it work for me.

I learned to play in 2015, at the age of 25. I took the advice of using the tbird as a beginner disc. I'm still having form issues because of it... 😆

Enjoyed all of the thought provoking questions, and group dialogue of weighing personal disc strategies. Also the idea that the Teebird is a baby firebird makes me want to revisit that disc I gave up on and perhaps maybe look at it differently.

To what Robbie said about baseline and pros. The Envy JC threw in was firm electron plastic. I know it's a putter but he uses it as a mid essentially and even said that in his in the bag (that he only throws like 1-2 mids because no the envy)
@eoghana315
@eoghana315 Жыл бұрын
I think part of the reason you don't see base plastic mids as much is because shipping them from European manufacturers eats into the price too much. That and fast putters/approach discs like Envies and Zones really encroached on the classic 4 speed wide diameter mids like Rocs, Comets, etc.

I'm with Brad. I think especially early on when you're learning about molds and plastics it's natural to venture out and try a lot of variety and then you figure out what is comfortable and what you'd ultimately bag moving forward and eventually minimalize from there. Great episode.

I agree that trying out new discs is one of the things that keeps it fun. The only molds that I carry multiples of in various plastics and wear are Volts and Wraiths. One of the things I love about MVP is that they have multiple molds that feel so close. I just picked up Neutron Signal, Relay, Crave and Servo to try out and they all feel the same in the hand but fly quite differently. The Crave is a bit different because of the different plastic, but I would have a hard time telling the others apart without close inspection. I’m feeling Brad’s Vulture Dilemma. The Volt has become my favorite mold, but I’m starting to worry these Servos might take over some of their spots.

Great episode guys! I started playing in 05, played for 5 years then injury made me quit. In January of this year I picked the sport back up and here is something I noticed or maybe im just bias but, Innova PFN disc fly better than what they have on the market today. Ive been working on my back hand which has had me out in the field and out of the stack of 25 disc I take out there, I have noticed that that the PFNs have been my furthest fliers. This was about 8 different occasions out of 10 and I only throw 3 PFNs in that stack. The PFNs I own arn't beat to crap so maybe there is another reason they fly further but I thought that was interesting.

Lol discussion with friend about how this year I’ve gone from disc I’ve had for 6-10 years and minimal molds to all new bag this year and many new molds. Old multiple disc molds that aren’t even in my bag. Oddly score the same.
@ForehandDiscReviews

I think my mold minimalization has been due to figuring out what I like and me only throwing forehand that I don’t have to bag discs for backhand. I kinda have my workhorse tent pole of discs the zone/raptor/force then I have tried to do another tent pole with the berg/reactor/ and still trying to find the fairway for the slightly overstable/neutral spot

The topic of beating in discs is very interesting to me personally, I have been playing disc golf for 6 years and I would say I only have a couple beat in discs from over the years. I throw all brands and have the same experience with all premium plastics, they do not beat in fast. My thought is where I live and play, I live in Canada and play mostly park style courses. I hit trees but it would take me three years of playing with a disc in my bag to see a noticeable change in its flight. What are your thoughts?

i always just tell friends that are getting into the sport to pick a fairway that feels good in the hand to build their bag around. everything else can be switched around and tested, but they can always reach for that trusted fairway to hit a tunnel.

I use to throw a full MVP bag with my only duplicate disc being my putters, Hex, octane. Recently went full Lone Star bag over the last month. With much more “mold minimalistic” bag due to them simply having less options for disc molds and I’ve been playing my best golf to date. Not saying lone star is better than MVP! I think the improvement is from the simplified mold bag.

I have been in sales before and I have been told that if you price things too low, people will subconsciously turn away because they are thinking it’s cheap quality wise. The big slogan of, “you get what you paid for,” as in if you pay less it doesn’t last. Premium means it will last. People will pay a little extra to get there moneys worth. The difference between the price of base line plastic to the price to premium plastic is way smaller then the difference of the durability of the 2.

You don’t need to beat any mids in now that Discraft is making X Line Stratus’s again. Best hyzer flip disc I’ve ever thrown out of the box. I went back and got many more. I’m sure that will beat in but no need to beat in a more stable disc to do that when I have a ton of brand new discs that already do.

I prefer mold minimalization with different plastics. I bag multiple photons, volts, reactors and envy’s I different plastics and levels of wear. The fission (and electron for the envy) is more flippy, the cosmic neutron or eclipse is more OS, and the neutron and plasma are both in between. With that said, I lost my flippy fission volt and my new one isn’t where that was but a brand new insanity was somehow perfect. A slightly different feel but not so different that it feels weird.

I don’t think keeping beat in mold works, at least for me. I have 2 reactors one that’s fission and one that’s glow. I never throw the fission anymore because I don’t trust it to fly like a reactor anymore. I always grab my mockingbird for the flippy style shot that reactor now flys like. I guess it gets in my head that when I throw a reactor, I want it to throw like a reactor not some goofy flippy reactor/ uplink flight this thing now does.

I feel that mold minimalization is a bit of an outdated idea for disc golf, back to a time when there weren't so many options. With so many discs available on the market you can easily find any nuanced flight with a brand new disc.

I think your on the dot with building a bag with this point. I spent time having 23 molds and 24 total disc when I decided to remove all innova from my bag. It allowed me to gravitate to certain molds that cycled down to 12 molds I reached for. I at this point find myself trying to cycle down to 10 molds with bagging 6 of the same distance driver mold knowing even with options I always went with my raiders cause they just feel better in the hand then other molds. I would not have known this if I didn't branch out from destroyers/Wraiths though.
