I had a similar problem on a new 1997 Mercury Cougar with the plastic intake manifold on the Modular V8 -- they eventually got it right, but for about 6 years problems. They never recalled mine, but did give me the parts to fix (after a total cooling system meltdown), but still invested $2k in engine repairs and every oil change had coolant in it.

The Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar we call "the boat anchor" at the shop I work. It's VERY common for the oil cooler housing (located in the "V" valley of the engine) to fail, its made largely of PLASTIC and it gets hot so it frequently warps and the o-rings begin to fail causing the oil cooler to mix coolant into the oil. VERY poor design and vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica have an equally stupid EGR cooler that is beginning to do the same thing. When these aren't destroying lifters they're popping heads and when that's not happening the oil cooler fails...junk

100% correct. I helped my cousin replace one on his 2014 Grand Caravan with the 3.6L V6 and it was a headache. It was a fairly extensive job and he had to pay list price for the part because it was during a short supply time. When he arrived to get the OEM part from the dealership the guy said, "You're just in time. I was going to call you and tell you I had it sold over the phone for a premium over list price. These things are like 300+ units deep on backorder from Stellantis".

Leave it to Stellantis to design a 3.6L V6 with a plastic oil cooler which as others stated warps and causes leaks. The actual OEM "test" is to take a popsicle stick and put it in the valley of the engine. If the popsicle stick fills up with oil to a certain level, the cooler is bad and needs replacement. I did one along with my cousin on his 2014 Grand Caravan and it wasn't a very hard job, but it was extensive. Gives credence to the old Dodge acronym, "Drips Oil, Drops Grease Everywhere". As I noted in another post, at one point they were over 300+ units deep into national backorder and dealerships were charging a premium over list price to get the part. Yes, there are aftermarket versions, but this is a job you don't really want to do twice......

The 3.6 is NOT a Stellantis designed or engineered engine. It was actually signed by Mercedes back when they and Chrysler were together. When they split, Chrysler got that engine as part of the deal. We've had 4 of them in different Jeeps and a Promaster van. Not an issue one with any of them while we had them although the oil cooler/filter housing is a known problem area. Replace with the Dorman aluminum part and you're good for another 100k miles. The 3.6, if taken care of with 5k mile oil changes can easily go 300-400k miles before major engine work. Do these Durango's have the 3.6 or the now discontinued Hemi V8? I would think a state trooper vehicle would get the hemi....

@@robertjay0515 Stellantis owns it now, provides parts for it, so no matter where it came as far as original design, it's a total piece of crap. Absolute junk. Everything is plastic under the hood and it's bound to fail. It exudes cheapness and bottom barrel quality. My cousin's vehicle is a 2014, and by then FCA owned them and was overseeing the assembly. Toyota called---they're laughing at the 300-400k mark because many of their engines easily attain this. So can a 307 Olds V8, among other GM products. Stellantis has a long way to go before they can be considered a "quality" automaker.

Im a mechanic for amazon with the 2020 ram pro master they have these same v6 engines that are horrible. Oil and coolant mixture comes from a failed oil cooler gasket. Both oil and coolant passes through the oil cooler. The oil cooler sits ontop of the engine in between bank 1 and bank 2 and leaves a pool of coolant/oil mixture there. And eventually it makes it’s way through the edges. One good way to detect a failing oil cooler gasket is by looking ontop of the transmission and if you see oil or any wetness at all, more then likely your oil cooler has failed. It’s so common on these v6 engines stay away from them
