A day of tears & tunnels and devastating news on our narrowboat journey down Heartbreak Hill locks, (well, some of them) officially known as the Cheshire Locks. Colin explores the abandoned Harecastle South Railway Tunnel with fellow KZfaq explorer ‪@MartinZero‬, and get's filthy!
Onwards exploring Britain by Narrowboat, we leave Church Lawton, heading north through Rode Heath and Thurlwood, where we find out about Thurlwood Steel Lock, then on to the village of Betchton and towards Hassell Green. We moor narrowboat Silver Fox at Lock 57 where Colin receives some bad news.
This episode contains a discussion of mental health issues that some viewers may find upsetting.

In the North Georgia Mountains in the US, I “live vicariously” through you two. I don’t ever plan to step foot on a narrow boat, but the miracle of technology connects me to two wonderful people who share their journey with us. May you always know happiness and joy in each other’s company. Thank you both very much!

The more people who speak out, the more people who will understand Colin as you well know. Mental health depends on it. Mental illness is not something we choose. With physical conditions positive wellbeing is not dependent on the absence of disease such as arthritis or a limb missing etc. You can have a happy and productive life and that is a given now. You are proving to your followers that mental health and well being are not dependent on the absence of any illness. I hope that makes sense. You two are my early Saturday morning go to. It is getting quite hot some days in Oz now. Our turn for long days of sunshine. Richard from down under.

Since having a very serious heart attack 3 years ago (age 54) I have suffered with severe anxiety and depression. I have quite possibly had it for much longer but didn't realise; and it took this life changing event to make me understand what it was. As a roughy toughy Firefighter it took me some time to admit to myself let alone others that I needed help. After a short while I received professional help and it has really helped my recovery. I now also find it easier to talk to people about it today. I still have bad days and just want to be left alone. The main thing that suprised me was how my heart attack and subsequent Heart By-pass surgery had such a massive effect on me mentally as well as physically (something that the hospital didn't warn me about). But the message I now tell other people is the well know phrase that "It is OK to not be OK" So as you say, talk to people and seek help as soon as possible. Thank you Guys for being so open on Mental Health Issues and a lovely Vlog and tribute to Paul. My thoughts are with his family. PS I also purchased a narrow boat in August and our trips out on the cut help tremendously. :-)

Colin, your vlogs were a light in the darkness for Paul, and while, in the end, he did not survive that darkness, YOU helped keep the light in his life longer. I know that it is not really a great comfort to hear this, but it is true. With Paul's depression, without you, he could have chosen to end his life months sooner, and you have to cling to that. The darkness is indeed an evil thing, and the fight against it is indeed a difficult struggle. And, unfortunately, the battle isn't always won. Sending hugs to you and to Sue.

Hi Guys. I had to write this after seeing your vlog and talking about Paul who took his own life. As a counsellor I frequently see people who feel as if opting out would be a better option than staying alive. Its a very lonely place for them and the only people who truly understand are those who have been there themselves! I think Colin is doing a great job of telling it how it really is when he feels bad. Sean is a truly loving support for Colin. Talking openly about mental health problems brings it out into the open and helps down play the stigma still attached to it. Things are getting better thankfully with more well known personalities talking about their own mental health issues too. You are both helping in this worthy cause. I know you dont like things too serious guys so end of essay! I lurve your vlogs. D xx

I know sadness boys but I want you to know that I enjoy your journeys so very much. In life we are often given times we are not prepared for but keeping a smile on your face is so important. I often watch your videos to cheer up and zone out dreaming of a vacation on a narrow boat. My youngest daughters husband was killed over in Afghanistan and 18 months afterwards my daughter died as well. Her grief took her away from us and some days it’s impossible to function. On top of all that, at 62 yrs of age I ended up with my grandchild to raise. Their child had nobody but me, orphaned by grief. It’s so unfair. But this child has been the saving grace for me. I never thought I would be raising a toddler at this point in my life but I am. This child brings joy into my life that I never thought I would ever have again. I’m so sorry to hear about your fan and friend. No matter how despondent one gets, always remember how lucky you actually are to have companionship and love in your life. Keep on smiling boys, life’s a journey and every day a new one. I do enjoy your videos and I thank you for your sincerity and transparency. Peace to you both ✌🏻❤️🇺🇸😷

10 years ago I was suffering with Depression and other health issues and had no positive support from the NHS Mental Health Team, I was basically told to "pull myself together", so unfortunately, I did attempt suicide and received no sympathy from the Medical Team, the next morning the consultant said "well at least you haven't done your liver in" and with a look of contempt discharged me without any follow up with a Mental Health team., if it hadn't been for my Wife's support I don't think I would be here today. I know it can be difficult but talking to someone is a must. Keep the vlogs coming we love watching them.

I’ve only just seen this vlog - I was aware of Colin’s mental health from earlier ones - and I found the mention of Sue and Paul quite moving. At the end, when you included Paul’s surname, it made me realise that we were kids together, growing up as neighbours in South Manchester. My own son took his life, age 17, almost 6 years ago. Mental illness is like chess, first the pawns move and then the bigger players and then you find yourself in checkmate. Don't underestimate the pawns, they all have a pattern, each move making you more detached until you feel so alone and in dispair. Seek out the triggers, be honest and make a counter move before the big players start to make their moves.

Oh how sad, so sorry Colin, tears listening to you, just so sad hearing your story about your friend who you didn't get to meet. But he's in a place now where nothing can hurt him - he might even be looking down on you guys on your narrowboat thinking "they made a right cods up of going through that lock, couple of toss pots." Keep smiling lad, we're smiling with you guys. Thanks so much for the vlogs, you always cheer me up if I'm a bit down.

Guys, another American here, living in the HOT California desert. Loving your VLogs, ALL of them. It's lovely to see the English countryside in a fashion unlike the bits in various British television programs (which I seem be addicted to). So green and wet! I've been working my way through the "episodes" in numerical order. Colin, I am tremendously impressed by your willingness to talk about your difficulties. There can be such stigma surrounding mental health issues. I'm a retired mental health professional and it is so refreshing to see the topic come up, as it should, as a part of daily living. And Shaun, the apparent ease with which you provide emotional backup is heartwarming. I've dragged my wife in to watch the odd episode or two- or three... I think she would echo all I've said. Following your travels is a delightful way to spend the time, since we're not going out much these days... Thank you.

I'm catching up on older vlogs from you two, ok 3 ! This one touched my heart so deeply. My Godson was a Captain in the US Army, having done 3 tours in Iraq. Lucas was always so upbeat, funny and full of hugs and smiles. None of us realized the turmoil,PTSD, etc. going on in his mind. 2 months ago we were awakened to the news that Lucas had committed suicide. Our hearts are broken and opened to this sad reality. Over 22 veterans a day, take their own lives. I'm so sorry for the loss of dear Paul and others fighting this silent battle. My love and hugs to you !! Waves from Kansas USA. Hey Colin, it’s so good to hear a man talk about tough stuff. It almost seems antithetical to talk about hard issues. I have frontal temporal degeneration, a type of dementia. It was hard to accept and I experienced a lot of depression, some I later attributed to grieving over the things I could no loner do like driving and being alone with small children due my short attention span. I only started feeling acceptance of my condition by doing what you suggested, talking with others who were safe to talk with. I also learned to allow myself to grieve and at times to be depressed. I almost always realized it wasn’t me but my condition causing my issues. Once I realized I couldn’t make it go away I was better able to accept it and try to live one day at a time. Even with my better acceptance at times in the moment the depression will return and somehow I now better accept it, though with a struggle. For me Acceptance is built on relationships with others who have my same struggles and hearing them discuss their hard stuff. You have been a blessing sharing your hard issues and your channel is one I go to for enjoyment when true enjoyment is at times hard to come by. You have been a true blessing for me and I so enjoy the history you share. You and Shaun have had more ups and downs, especially with all your lock adventures (bad canal joke). You guys keep being yourself and real - sorry about the rambling.

Great video as always and thank you for highlighting mental health issues. Isn't it strange how national and local governments always have enough public money for themselves - high incomes, second homes, new offices, travel and dining expenses etc but never enough for front line services. Very powerful episode. It is so important to get the discussion of mental health issues out into the mainstream and normalize them as problems regular people have that can and should be dealt with.....not hidden away. Thank you for doing this. On a lighter note I enjoyed seeing a shot of the interior of Silver Fox. While I love the travelogue aspect of your videos I would also enjoy seeing more about day to day boat life. (maintenance, repairs, shopping for supplies and equipment etc etc) Speaking as a non UK viewer a map at the start of the videos to orientate us as to where you are in the UK for this episode would be a great help. (maybe small scale of all of the UK and then zooming in to where you are?) I often google place names but then the resulting maps don't show the canals so I don't get a good idea of that week's journey. Thanks for the channel....I'm really enjoying working my way through it!

Greetings from New York; USA.Colin, you are amazing. Beautiful tribute to your friend. I could never say I know what you're going thru. Just know that you have the support of your husband and your viewers, and we hope you stay strong. A few years ago, my husband and I were "adopted" by a young man with Autism who did not have a very positive home life. We are his 'Dad' and 'Dadders' now. Over the years, we and friends, have helped him and fortunately, he is now in a much more stable environment. He still has minor episodes, but they are few and far between.I'm so glad I found your videos, and enjoy tracing your travels on the Canal and River Trust maps. Before we met, my husband used to travel to visit a friend in Bournemouth once a year, and tell me of his travels around England/France. I so hoped to get there some day, and if the chance (and funds) ever make that possible, would love to give both you guys a big hug...for bringing your travels to the internet so we can travel vicariously.Thank you, stay strong, be well, and wishing you both a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year. As a young lad I walked through the harecastle Tunnel many times , and red bull as far as I’m aware took its name from the two public houses of the same name one is adjacent to the lock , by the bridge of the A34 , the other is just about 200 yards up the from the first red bull pub , although it became an Indian restaurant, they were locally known as the top and bottom bull , in fact just further up the road from the Top bull , is the birthplace of Reginald Mitchell, the designer of the spitfire , that’s the village of butt lane , where I was born .

Honestly the quiet music after your tribute to your friend is absolutely wonderful. I am as sentimental as you my friend , I cried exactly when you started with tears. I listen to how incredibly kind , compassionate and extremely passionate you are with expressing your love with tears. As right now, I think of yaulls Dillon. Tears are good to be in the company of others for it helps , like speaking , with the reverberation of all hearts and souls as one. I too miss my beagle dog Mikey, I too am completely alone with no friends , friends or partner. I'm old . With depression all my life and it's gotten worse as I write. I live in Atlanta. It's horrible here. Right at this moment I scream each day within my self to get out of this place and on to another state or city. I share with you all this, because I'm a really good guy just nowhere to turn. I used to be a happy guy, but with out actual love I am no body.
