FPV Whoop Antenna Test | Linear Dipole vs. Circular Polarized | Comparison

The 5.8 GHz video signal degrades greatly by obstructions, making it difficult to fly behind trees and structures. For backyard flyers like me, improving signal reception is an ongoing effort. In this test here is the configuration:
Linear Dipole; Lumenier 7979 vs.
Circular Polarized; Foxeer Loppipop 3
Goggles: Skyzone 02X
iFlight RHCP 150mm
Foxeer Echo Patch

Glad I found this video and great testing! I have been researching better analog reception and found another one of your videos, imagine that :) I hope that you have achieved optimal signal reception over the last 2 years so you can simply tell me what it is lol. Great video, always top shelf.

I've since added a rapid fire module to the goggles. Even less glitchy.

@TommyTester yeah, I cheaped out on that part. Watched a 100 videos comparing all of the analog receivers. I knew I would have to probably buy a cheaper one first to realize I needed to buy the rapidfire 😁

Thank's for the video, i think you should put linear antenna also on the goggle for best result when you have linear on the quad. They have to match.

While you're right about matching, most people using a patch/omni on their goggles for best coverage in most cases. Most whoops come with a linear antenna so switching it to a little foxeer lollipop, you get better coverage as apposed to down-grading your goggle antennas to get the same, if not worse, coverage.

@@gasser5001 i've tested many whoop, and i have better results with cheap linear on vtx and goggles than circular omni..it depend a lot in the quality and best frequency of the antenna.

If i get the foxeer lollipop do i have to use the same brand on my googles or can i still use the one that came with the googles? I have the fatshark scouts and it came with a right hand Omni antenna. I think it’s immersionRC but it’s the one that came with the googles.

@@drewbooFPV the brand is not important, they bust be both right or left handed..obiouvsly different brand may have small difference in the specific central frequency but they are all rated for 5.8..

you can install linear patch antenna and linea omni, it's not nessesary to use polarisation. But they have to match, yes

1 Linear antenna on the goggles ( original shipped with sky zones) and a linear patch antenna as well for whoops with a single dipole. I have a menace Viper patch that is linear, fantastic antenna. Running a linear on the quad and cp on the goggles will cut your signal by 25% minimum.

Hum...those look pretty damn close to me. I would certainly *not* say that the RHCP was definitively better, though I know matched should be better.

I'm going to attempt to solder a ufl connector to my TH2FS so I can replace them when needed instead of just straight soldering it to the board. I'm going to try a foxeer lollipop then an AXII2 one, see if that's any improvement.

Dipole. A lollipop. They are all good. Pick one that has the correct connector for your quad.

Do I have to upgrade my drone antennas or am I able to upgrade just my goggles antennas?

In general, the best goggle antenna setup is 1 circular polarized omni and 1 circular polarized patch (or a linear patch). The patch allows you to pick up a clearer signal if you are able to face the quad while in flight, such as using the sound of the quad to help you adjust which way you are facing. This might be enough of an improvement to get a good signal from a linear dipole, but in my experience (and those of others) having a circular polarized omni on the quad and one the goggles works the best. The UFL connector is fragile, so yes, they are not designed for many cycles.

Odd that every single FPV pilot I've watched has the tendancy to look at the ground while flying, when their drones are up in the sky. Why is that?

It means they have too much camera angle for the speed they are flying. This is a relatively SLOW hover flight with probably a 25-30' camera uptilt. You tend to look with your head where you want to see better angle. If you are pitching down, it means you are flying slow for the camera tilt...typically. If you have a shallow camera and are really pitched forward racing, you will tend to be looking up into the flight...
