Designed by America's most famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Meyer S May house was built in 1908 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Meyer May was a local clothing store owner; he built this house for his wife and two adopted children.
Mr. Wright designed this house to allow maximum southern exposure for the living room windows and skylights and to create a spacious yard for the perennial gardens. This design draws nature into the house. Doors which open out to the terraces and gardens and planters are all incorporated into the design to intermingle the interior and exterior.
This masterpiece of the prairie-style design is the most complete restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright house in existence. The owners, Steelcase Inc., an international furniture company, spared no expense in reproducing in exact detail all furnishings and original grandeur. It was opened to the public for visitor tours in 1987.

Kudos to Steelcase, firstly for recognizing an important heritage property and secondly for writing a blank check to do it right.

If you lived in a FLW house at the turn of the century, you lived in the future. That residence is more modern than anything currently being built and is higher in quality. What a genius that man was.

Amy Lee, the shower was impressive, especially considering the technology was from 1909. The outside is imposing, and much of the metal work is patina copper. I was especially taken with the "tiger oak" pattern in the doors. There was so much that really can't be experienced through video, but I thought Bev did an outstanding job especially in close quarters with only ambient light. Thanks! Paul

I believe you are right. His designs do seem ahead of their time, but perhaps they simply are what set the style of the time to come. Truly a beautiful house.

Ettore, in a manner of speaking, I suppose yes. They do look quite similar, but are not truly "twins" in the strictest sense of the word. They were both designed around the same time, and are both a part of what is called the Prairie Style. We are hoping to do a series of videos in the Chicago area in the near future, and IF it is possible I will see if we can cover the Robie house. That might be nice. Thanks for watching and commenting!! Paul

It is pieces of glass that had metallic particles sprinkled on it, then heated to about 2000 degrees, forming the colors. After it is cooled then the brick masons put the glass in the mortar joint. When the sun hits it, the glass glows. Found at 6:48 - 7:12 I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
