"Frat Rap": Hip Hop's Most Hated Subgenre

First impressions are everything. And in hip-hop, your entry into the game can haunt you forever. When it comes to white rappers in hip-hop, the only way for them to be accepted is to differentiate themselves either through their music or personality. Take Eminem for example, his combination of blistering rhymes and showmanship made it easy for audiences to accept him as a unique commodity, while for New York’s El-P, he was such and outsider in both his sound and subject matter that he was undeniable.
In today’s landscape, Post Malone has gotten by on a melodic flow that peers deep into his fan’s soul, while making beer pong and Marlboros into his public image. But where that love of partying is exhibited in his life and live performances, it doesn’t define his music. But long before White Iverson hit airwaves, there was a genre that solely relied on the beer-fuelled experiences of young caucasian males such as Post.. It was known as frat rap and now, you’d be hard pushed to find a movement in hip-hop that was as hated.

People don't want to admit it but Mac Miller was on the sidelines of hiphop for most of his career and wasn't taken seriously until after he passed.

People forget Mac was an honorary member of OFWGKTA, Black Hippy, A$AP, and the RVIDXR KLVN. Lol he was there when Rocky and Purrp first met. His friends clothing company "Daily Bread" helped them get on haha dude is a hip hop legend for that.

Mac being frat/stoner rap at the start suited me. I was like 14 when his career began and as he grew and evolved, I did too. His evolution was great. Still bump Faces constantly. Mac had everything. Chill songs, lyrical songs, hype songs. The guy could play countless instruments and produced a lot of dope songs. A proper artist.

Frat Rap is pretty cringe, but Mac Miller is the perfect example of how one of these typea dudes can easily grow into something unique and special. I’m not gonna lie, I always fucked with Mac Miller even early on when he was seen as the epitome of frat boy rap. He’s always made good music. But his transformation late in his career was pretty remarkable to watch as his sound and subject matter matured significantly. We lost a real one when he passed, RIP.

I am surprised you didn't take it back to one of the earliest examples of frat rap with the Beastie Boys and their Licensed to Ill album which was totally in that lane, in fact it may have created that lane. People forget that their first major album, while iconic, is without a doubt the epitome of the sound. Then they turned around and with their next album changed their entire image with Pauls Boutique which pulled them from the likelihood of being a one hit wonder to one of the most iconic groups in hip hop history right along Run DMC and Public Enemy.

Mac evolved past frat rap and even past rap. He was a real musician and a pure soul.

Honestly although Mac Miller's early music was categorized as "frat rap", he blossomed into an incredibly talented and humble artist and you can hear it, too. He got the respect he deserved by the time he released Swimming, in my opinion. And let's not forget he was a multi-talented musician and multi-instrumentalist that played all instruments beautifully. Circles might be one of my top 3 favorite posthumous releases of all-time. RIP Mac.

Mac Miller was frat rap early in his career. Macadelic was the turning point for him. But even since KIDS you could tell Mac had bars and just needed to find his sound

If you were around Mac's age growing up you literally went through all his progression with him. Weather it be 14 yo young stoner rap, to early 20s depressed rap,..to MUSIC that would relate to any person, and anytime and will never get old. Mac was different, and you really had to be there to get is evolution as an artist.

I hated frat rap Mac only because it seemed like a specific type of guys would be a his biggest fans and they’d play it to death in da car I’m so so happy he evolved because I absolutely love his disco over all he’s always been big on experimenting and it truly inspired me to try all types of sub-genres

Mac was an amazing musician and a true master of the craft. He helped out tons of rappers like Vince Staples and Joey Badass. Mac truly did create a genre of his own.

Mac wasn't frat rap to me, he was always making boom bap type songs and more in that stoner Wiz & Spitta lane. I'd say he got more "weird" when he started kicking it with Earl, Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Etc. Thats when he def blossomed into a fuller artist but people only threw frat rap on him cause he was white lmao
