Watch Full Interview: • Hollywood & Football L...
Part 2: • Fred Williamson: I Got...
--------
American footballer and actor Fred "The Hammer" Williamson explored his upbringing and the journey that led to his prowess in professional sports and Hollywood. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, as an only child, Williamson self-identified as a solitary figure who had to persistently prove himself despite perceived societal weakness for his careful appearance. After moving to Chicago, Williamson stayed determined, navigating through the disciplined culture of the time under the watchful eyes of parents and authority figures alike. After high school, Williamson joined the Marines before going on to Northwestern University on a track and field scholarship. However, the athletically gifted student was soon spotted by influential coaches who introduced him to football.

One of my childhood heroes! Fred Williamson is a man's man. He was handsome, suave, eloquent, sharp, tough, cool, and a player! He was a great athlete and played pro football when it was a true gladiator sport! Black Caesar is an all-time gangster classic film! Mr. Williamson portrays a character after Mob bosses like Bumpy Johnson, Frank Matthews, and Leroy Nicky Barnes. And he was awesome in the role! The film Three The Hard Way, starring the late Jim Brown and Jim Kelly was inspirational to me as a Haitian-American kid from Flatbush, Brooklyn, during the 1970s. They portrayed black men who protected our communities against evil white supremacists! They were Black American action heroes who could compete with the best of them in cinema history! These brothers were the real deal! They were actual athletes who could kick mere actors' asses! It's a pleasure to see this iconic action hero alive and well today.

True story, I met Mr. Williamson at LaGuardia Airport in New York back in 1987. He was so Statuesque. I asked him for his autograph. He was getting his boots shined. I had a pen but no paper. I felt like a dumb ass kid when he said to me "where's the paper". He kindly took out his wallet and pulled out a piece of paper and signed it for me. He did not have to do that. But, he did. I was a young wanna be Actor who was Star Struck. I was waiting for my flight to go into the United States Army. I told him that and he said "So.. Your going to protect me." I said yes sir. I told him about how I admired him and his life in Hollywood and him having homes in Rome and Overseas. He said to me "That's how it's has to be done. Mr. Williamson is a good man and a very talented actor. I wish I could have worked with him. Mr. Williamson, I just want to say to you. Thank you for signing that paper Sir. 😀
