I find silk, wool and linen a lot thrifting. Not cashmere yet. I've found London Fog, a lot of Ralph Lauren lately, Anne Klein, Liz Claiborne, and others. I'm thinking very seriously about hitting up some stores in very wealthy areas to see what I can find there real soon.

I remember a book I read years ago by actress Sophia Loren, a poor Italian girl who went from rags to riches. For her first acting audition at age 18, she had no money or appropriate clothing, so she dyed her white blouse black and wore it with a dyed black skirt. Black always looks chic she said, no matter the quality. It seemed to work; she got the part!

I went to secondary school in Milan with a girl who was two years older than the rest of us. She was 19 and so ahead of her game, or so it would seem. She wore mostly black and had a steady boyfriend in Paris, whom she visited regularly. I was in awe of her but were not friends. Many years later, we reconnected and became friends. She admitted that she wore mostly black in her teens due to financial hardship. Yet she had bags of style.

Edith Piaf didn't have any funds to buy a dress to wear on stage for her debut performance. Thankfully, she did have had a small amount of wool, so knitted herself a chic little black dress with just one sleeve! 👱♀️❤

My mother showed me the great trick of changing the buttons on shirts, blazers and coats to make them look more expensive. Upgrading what you already own or thrift store clothes will change everything. Invest in great buttons and the most basic item can look 10 times more expensive.

Charity shops, car boot sales, jumble sales, auction sites and the very end of the sales. It has never failed to amaze me what people throw out. Also black nail varnish works well on heels too. Learn to do your own alterations too it saves a fortune.

My son's girlfriend is visiting Melbourne from L.A. Going back, her suitcase is 'full'. She loves vintage fashion, so was absolutely thrilled with the vintage silk scarves I gave to her... including a Jean Patou in autumnal tones. They are in perfect condition and look so chic tied on her neck, or onto her handbag strap. I can't remember how much I didn't pay for the scarves when I bought them as vintage in the 1980s, probably around 20 cents each! I'm so pleased that they will now give her "Joy". 👱♀️❤

Vintage/charity shopping in Melbourne is so common. Its just part of the culture. I hope she had a great time and im glad to hear ahe left with a full suitcase ❤️

@@serahmaxy8849 Yes, it's always been normal to vintage shop in Melbourne (4 seasons in one day!). Btw, I also gave her a genuine snakeskin handbag...I'm glad she didn't have any problem getting it through customs, as it was genuine vintage and not new.🪱👜 👱♀️❤

Refreshing your black items is the best tip - I have always done this as I cannot (even as I approach 50!) get rid of my mostly black wardrobe.

My best tip is to shop goodwill, thrift stores, consignment shops and second hand stores. I look for designer names and well made classic pieces. Most times 70 to 80% off retail. I shop for basics, no crazy colors or patterns, this way, just a few pieces can be mixed and matched for dozens of outfits.

I go to the higher end neighborhoods to go thrifting they usually have nicer label items and they aren't usually worn out or if the leather is a tiny tiny bit worn leather cream at my local western wear store helps revive it. I've found Lauren Ralph Lauren, J Crew, Dooney and Burke for affordable prices . Shirts that would have been $80+ I got for $8-10

My daughter also shops the men’s side of the thrift shop, and straight-hems the shirt tails. The men’s shirts have matched plaids, good buttons, etc., and are generally of higher quality, (if you can make them fit.)

Been broke many times in my life those are the times I have been more inventive, I once bought a dress from a charity shop and tweaked it myself for a wedding, I got so many compliments that day because it was simple yet original

I would just like to say that sewing is not an art for which you need talent. It is a craft that can be learned. Even without a sewing machine, just learning a little about hand sewing--I'm sure there must be KZfaq videos that teach this--will enable you to change hemlines and make your clothes fit better. You can do it!

I have dyed blue and black pants and extended their use. Another tip I learned is to rinse darks with white distilled vinegar as it will extend the life of the dye and is used instead of softener.

I remember dyeing clothes with Rit dye years ago when I was in my teens and 20s in Canada 🇨🇦 - to change the colour of a dated dress, but also, yes, to ‘rehab’ faded black! Back then the dye would transfer each time you washed a dyed garment, even if you carefully followed the dyeing instructions. It got me in the habit of separating my laundry by colour and washing like colours together, something I still do today. I think it may help preserve my clothes and keep them nice longer, because even commercially dyed clothes will transfer sometimes.

Oh, my, I didn't know any one else who ever said they used a black marker to fill in shoe damage and scuffs! I thought I was the only one to do it. I have also used furniture polish to polish shoes with. I was embarrassed to tell anyone, but it works!

If the shoes are leather, you can use skin cream which will be very kind to your shoes/handbag. I have been known to use Nivea (2€ for a large pot)to clean and nourish shoes and handbags 🤣

Air dry your clothes in the shade, house. The spin dryer breaks and degrades clothes. Or a 5-min spin for heavier clothes to loosen and avoid extra ironing. Your clothes will wear well.

I love this kind of video since it touches on how to maintain clothes by investing in tailoring and taking shoes to a cobbler. Some things I've found super helpful: as soon as I bring leather shoes home, I apply a moisturizing polish and weatherproof them. No matter how new the shoes are to you, they've been sitting somewhere for months, and dry leather will get damaged more easily than leather that's been recently polished. Also, cobblers can fix so many problems, and it's usually better to maintain shoes than to throw them away (on average, shoes take 20 years to fall apart in a landfill, sometimes longer, so the more shoes you keep out of landfills, the better).

Recently while thrifting, I found a nearly new pair of Madewell Chelsea boots with dried out leather and discolored scuffs on the toes and heels. I got the feeling someone wore them a couple of times, then chucked them because the leather didn’t look so good anymore. 5 minutes and a little polish has them buttery soft and looking brand new.

Some things I do: 1. Shop second hand. But not when you need a specific item. Better when you have ideas, a color scheme, and time to hunt. 2. In America, shop JC Penney. They have some great basics and great sales. Drop in every two weeks or so. 3. Hang dry clothes in the garage on hot days, out if the sun. In Sacramento, my clothes would dry in about 39 minutes on the covered patio on hot days. Then I'd run them through the dryer for a few minutes to soften up and collect all the cat hair...🙀😸

I remember reading Joan Collin's autobiography years ago. She said when she first started out in London she dyed everything black because she didn't have many clothes.

For the hems… back when I wore slacks every day, I would keep 3-4 small safety pins on the bottom. (Where the inside seam of the leg meets the hem). I do this to both legs of each pair of slacks as soon as I have finished hemming the bottoms or finished taking them to the tailor. It has saved me so many times. If a hem falls, you always have a safety pin. If another emergency happens while you are out and about and you need a safety pin, you always have one. I had come to the rescue of several co-workers because I had my lucky hidden safety pins. I had done the same with some of my skirts (heavy fabric only), although I do not often wear skirts.

Thanks for your tips. My mother was broke most of her life. Her shopping was restricted to garage sales, thrift shops, and grocery store sale items. She bought high quality simple styles, and took good care of her clothing. Iron your cottons! At home she decorated with paint a lot.

Enjoyed this very much. Honestly I could listen to her recite the alphabet and enjoy it. I will add my bit: favorite "broke chic" outfit: jeans, black cardigan sweater, print scarf, hoop earrings and black pointy-toe flats. I also once bought a jacket with great lines that had cheap plastic buttons which I replaced and it took the whole jacket up a notch.

I'm a shoemaker and the "sharpie" felt pen in matching colour, is excellent for the patch then shoe polish over ( to prevent felt pen shine). You can glue with a water based UHU glue stick on the heel only. Smooth leather with back of a teaspoon. Perfect 👌👍 easy

Such good tips in this video. Many center around doing small maintenance of your clothes and shoes. Wearing clothes, shoes (and bags) that do not look worn out (and obvioulsy stain free) is the number 1 way of looking put together. The other tips center around finding what works for your body and stick to it, regardless of what the current trend is. I don't know that anyone looks at a pair of flattering, great fitting jeans that are part of a classic outift and goes "those went out of style 2.45 years ago".

Trying to do this. I love in south Louisiana where it's VERY hot and humid. I've managed to have 5 pairs of short- khaki, black, white, denim, and a pale pink eyelet. Tshirts- white, black, grey, and pink. One white eyelet sundress, and one black eyelet V neck dress. White jeans, and a medium blue jean. White sneakers, black ballet flats, nude sandals, and a metallic wedge sandal. It works for me! I don't work outside the home, so these outfits take me anyplace I need to go, without spending a lot of money.

I forgot to add that I also have a crisp white linen blouse, a short sleeve black blouse, and a leopard print t. When I pack away winter clothes, I keep out one lightweight, cotton leopard print cardigan. Also, I can't forget, a pair of tortoise shell driving mocs. They aren't as dressy as the flats and elevate an outfit above the sneaker look.

Me too! I arrived in Paris when I was 24 and immediately realized that I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DRESS! It took some time.. but, by osmosis, finally, I figured out my style and what suited my body type. For many years (80s and 90s) I wore a 'uniform': Black turtleneck, straight-legged jeans and black cowboy boots. In the summer, espadrilles and lighter tops and bottoms, but always solid colours (and a LOT of black, because of the light in Paris... you cannot do this in the South of France, where the light is softer). (Again! Me TOO!! I used to dye my clothes!! And 'Topy' all my shoes... even the cheap ones from André. They would last forever this way).

Oh and I went to the Netherlands a long time ago! Probably 30 ish years? I went on a trail ride at a full gallop along the mountain countryside with cliffs and beautiful green grass, it was the most amazing, surreal experience.

Love this. You are so right. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Black, white, neutrals. I do not like alot of patterns. I have some, but not alot. I mostly wear solid colors. My home is the same. Sofa, curtains, bedspread; solid neutral colors. Also, I do not understand why people pay money for ripped jeans?!?! WHY??? P.S. here in America, you can buy Ritt Dye everywhere. The grocery store, the small drugstores, the big box stores like Target or Walmart. You can even find Ritt Dye in the hardware store. Love ❤️ you. Keep up the great work. Christine

Yes, Chris why do people buy distressed jeans?? I've never understood that and I don't get it. I guess if you have great legs & you want to show them and so you can see through the holes that the person has nice legs and they're tan. But then guys are buying distressed jeans like Prince Harry who wore a pair in his Christmas photo for his extended family and I thought that was so trashy and inappropriate. It certainly didn't make the Prince look good nor did it make him look like he was part of the common folk if that's what he wanted to do. Everyone knows he's a Prince and he has millions and millions and millions of dollars, assuming his spouse has not spent it all!

I also love to revive clothes by replacing the buttons (or adding some on the shoulders of sweaters) to fancier/designer looking ones. A small thing which adds a big impact. I do it to blazers too! Bleaching my whites also ensures I get ore wear from them.

Yes! When I used to wear suits in the corporate world, some of them had very plain or cheap buttons. Replacing them with nicer ones really lifted the whole outfit.

I just wrote a similar comment (before I saw yours 😀). Yes, replacing buttons with better quality ones works wonders. My mom used to look a million dollars with her button upgrades. Nobody realised her clothes were probably cheaper than theirs. 😀

Your videos are excellent! Practical, intelligent, and truly stylish. I got a bit tired of some French influencers who struck me as very conservative with no edge at all, which I find boring. You are never that. I also follow Justine Leconte, who is terrific, and anything about Caroline De Maigret who has the French look that I admire: A little bit classic; a little bit rock and roll. Anyway, thanks for this especially for younger women who will really benefit from this particular video.

I lived in Dubai a while back and they sold Comfort Black fabric softener for their black abayas. I stock up once a year when I visit. The airport security looks at me weird but my black things have always looked newer!!😀 By the way, I love the new background! 🤩

I am so happy to hear someone saying "Iron your clothes!"👏👏👏👏👏 It makes such a big difference on how you look. And I can not agree more with having a good tailor or seamstress that can fix and alter your clothes, equally important is a good cobbler, they can save your shoes and handbags 👍😁😁😁, I had a black leather bag that after years of wear was beginning to look a bit faded, I had it re- died and it looked like new again 😍

I have changed the buttons on jackets and coats and cardigans from cheap plastic to something different. There are plenty of shops these days that sell buttons.

😁Yes! 🔘Buttons can have HUGE impact too. They shouldn't be underestimated. They can easily elevate something ho-hum to custom. It doesn't have to be expensive💰. If you hunt for interesting buttons in advance, they are easy to store in a jar. Keep your 👀eyes out for sales, scour flea markets, & yard sales for vintage buttons. Or, buy a button kit & thrift a coordinating garment or textile you can use for that purpose. 😳Sewing machines, patterns, & tailoring can be intimidating, but swapping buttons 🔃 is achievable for the complete novice. 😃This simple shift has 💯% changed my perspective on some garments. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

Hallo LM. I'm a man, but still enjoy watching Frédérique's videos ;-). You don't need to buy everything new just because you lost a lot of weight (that happened to me too several years ago). Go to a dressmaker and have your clothes altered to fit you properly! Half the battle of being elegant is making sure that your clothes FIT your body. That may not just involve having something taken in, but you might want to shorten your trousers and have a smart turn-up put on them, for example. I had so many clothes revamped like that - the waist taken in, the trouser legs made slimmer, the wrinkles taken out of the back neckline of a blazer... etc. It's fun, sustainable and thrifty!

I say no matter what brand you wear as long as whatever it is looks and fits great on you, it really doesn’t matter whether you spend 20.00 or 200.00. It’s really about the accessories and attitude. With the right shoes, handbag, jewelry, and you are good to go. I just wish that qualify handbags weren’t so terribly expensive. $$$$

I have Express light blue jeans but they are flare style, they actually look good for being 5'2", and I'm looking for slim fit light blue wash ( not designer) and can't seem to find them where I live. I like your advice on wearing "button down" and blazers for an attractive smart look. Yes and having a good tailor makes something old look new again for me. I never thought of using "dye" for brightening up older clothes items. Always something new with you Frederique I haven't heard before.

@@jadinec3120 Of course you can dye them. Just remember to get the right dye. Jeans today can be blends of fabric. If they're all cotton, you can buy dye most anywhere. Polyester requires dye specifically for polyester. Just check your labels so you won't be disappointed. I dye clothing when I like the garment but not the color.

@@jadinec3120 I've found dark blue dye works well on jeans or other natural fabrics. You can put more or less dye, or do it again (in the washing machine) if it doesnt come out dark enough. I prefer to put less in the first time as it's better to adjust than come out too dark the first time.

Bonjour Frederique! Yes! I want to see you running in your heels! Especially since you wear such high ones! Ha! 🤣 I'm all about looking good on a budget, too. I don't think you need expensive clothes to look good. Mostly, it's about color and how you style the pieces and these are skills that we can learn to help elevate our wardrobe. This concept was here before minimalism when people only had a few items. Sometimes we have to look backwards to go forward. Love love love you! 🥰 XOXO

I've dyed a brown belt to black before, one of my best decisions because I wear it every day now. Same with my black Dr. Martens. There's an American company called Angelus that sells leather dye & paint that's easy to use at home. & I should my old black jeans, you're so right.

I love these tips! I had to retire early, due to serious health issues... so I donated most of my work clothes, and couldn't shop as often. My tips to dressing well are: always get clothes tailored if needed (I am very short, under 5 ft., so everything needs hemming, including sleeves!!), make sure clothes are well pressed, wrinkled clothes look inexpensive, no matter how much they cost and, buy clothes that fit well. I gained weight due to the medications I must take, and I noticed that well fitting clothes look much more expensive!

This was not only practical but fun :)) However, I used to wear lots of black before, but nowadays try to avoid it: it can make me feel and look much older and too serious. Which I am not :) and therefore it doesn't fit to my personality. Not everyone can wear black, and some people shouldn't. I only have a very few pieces: a long dress, a shorter dress and one blazer that I would wear for stage and other special occasions, and a couple of sporty items where it's not about looking chiq, therefore color doesn't matter too much.

Every time that I watch one of your videos, I feel as though I am catching up with an old friend, and I know that I am speaking for many of your viewers when I express that opinion. As someone who watches your work, on a consistent basis, I wanted to compliment you on the decision to paint the background wall, behind you, black. It looks fantastic and makes the furniture and items, placed in front of it, which seem to consist of a lot of bright or light colors, really pop. A brilliant idea, which brings a different intensity and a sharpness to anything--including you--displayed in front of it. Fake jewellery or buckles on shoes especially the gold ones fade so quickly. Also any stones will fall after wear n tear or get dull. Whenever I buy something like that, I would either spray it transparent lacquer or clear nail polish coat. Everything lasts so much longer.

Very clever $$$ saving style ideals. I live in an apt complex near an Ivy League University. Students throw away sometimes a 1,000.00 small black over the shoulder with gold braided chain, by Yves Saint Laurent. Unbelievable! Wasn't a knock off. I do find nice clothes in a bag outside the compactor.

The stapler trip made me burst out laughing 😂 (Good idea thought) I take something to get tailored or repaired on average once-a-month. They don’t even call me to pick up my repair, because they know I’ll be back to drop something off.

(Holding up hand) I dye my black clothes. I love BLACK. When my black clothes start looking grayish, not so much. So, I use mild detergent on them, and dye when necessary! Works like a charm!

Try using a liquid detergent specifically designed for black clothes. They don,t contain optical brighternes. I use persil black wash on all my good black clothes and they never get that greyish sheen.

Ladies, don't forget you can get those basics at the thrift stores. When I was younger in the 80's, my Sister and I bought men's white dress shirts at the Goodwill store. They were plentiful and cheap. They still are today. Men's shirts were always way cheaper than the women's. I still cruise the men's shirts for quality flannel shirts. Thank you Frederique, for a simple list of basics to start with.

I would add that instead of going for fast fashion versions of trends, (especially in poor quality materials) try looking for handmade statement jewellery or vintage pieces. Op shops, small jewellery boutiques, online craft platforms will have things that give your look originality.

That's the problem with being a short woman, we have to pay the Tailor for alterations, so that our pants and jeans are correct length! Sometimes petite brands are even too long on my 5'2" frame!!!😜
