My 63-year-old mother wanted to see "Free Guy" based on trailers. We went last week. I think she liked it more than I did. She definitely laughed out loud more than me, and she rarely lols.

Reminiscence has had next to no marketing in Australia, though I can't speak for the rest of the world wide market. I haven't seen a trailer, poster, or ad anywhere.

I know, it’s so weird. I did get one KZfaq as for it a few months ago, but that’s ages. They normally market the shit out of Hugh Jackman. That being said, there’s a small cinema near me where I know I could see it for $10.

Same, might be the movies I was watching but I can't recall a single trailer for reminiscence, when I saw it on the Odeon app last week I genuinely had no idea the movie existed.

Saw Free Guy last weekend and it's so good. It's a ton of fun and even has some heart too. Not surprised it is holding well. Let's see Reminiscence opened poorly going up against -Probably the best word of mouth movie of the summer in Free Guy - A superhero movie still fairly early in its release schedule - A family disney film in Jungle Cruise still fairly early in its run. Against that competition, something like Reminiscence would have bombed even in non Covid times.

It's funny about reminiscence that you mentioned they tried it to fit it into that Nolanverse when the film is literally from two members of his family (his brother Jonathan Nolan and Jonathan's wife who wrote/directed the film Lisa Joy).

Free Guy is proving that a movie that surprised, can have a good second week, if its box office only. Its fair to say that if Free Guy had come out on Disney+ as well, all the positive buzz would have fed Disney+ not the cinemas. HOWEVER its also fair to say that despite being on Disney+, Jungle Cruise is chugging along, at the box office. (and honestly it might surprise us, with how well it did)

There are quite some notable movie promotions where the actor turned director’s name isn’t mentioned, like on “Flag Day”. -Hacksaw Ridge, ‘from the acclaimed director of Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ’. -Live by Night, ‘from the director of Argo and The Town’. -The Postman, ‘from the Academy Award winning director of Dances with Wolves’.

I saw so many commercials for Reminisce! They really put in the ad buys for KZfaq and some TV commercials during the Olympics. It took watching them a few times before I even noticed that it would get a theatrical release. I was semi-interested in it at first glance, but it looked like a Total Recall knockoff that was only on HBO Max.

I've been seeing Reminiscence trailer ads on KZfaq constantly all last week, if I had to guess it'd be on about every third video I've watched. That, plus the trailers being full of lines like "the perfect mind-bending thriller of the summer," really gave me an impression of desperation.

Here's an idea for you Dan (if you can track down the stats); the box office "Top Five" for August 1921 (and so on). lol. For example, the now lost drama Why Girls Leave Home was released by Warner Bros in July 1921 and did rather well, I believe. Would it have been top five the following month?

I had a feeling this might be the case. Anecdotal, but I did a double feature on Saturday and barely 12 people in a matinee for Reminiscence, the theater I saw Night House later that night had more than twice the people. Sadly, saw Suicide Squad again, and it was just me and one other person in the theater... Still loved it.

I’m sad Tenet left the domestic top 10 / 365 list but happy it’ll make the worldwide list. Irony I saw both the movies last weekend that kicked it off the list at a Drive In. They were at least worthy movies that kicked it off. Free Guy was an awesome, sweet fantasy!!

Raging Fire kicks ass. Definitely one of the best action movies of the year, although it won’t get the attention I think it deserves. Soul also opened with around $5 million in China but made it to the $50 million range thanks to great word of mouth.

Maybe I heard wrong but it wasnt the next installment of memories of murder. The new one on the chart is a documentary about a UK serial killer while the other is a bong joon-ho film based on south koreas first documented serial killer. Which is fantastic btw... Just similar titles. Sorry to nitpick

Three of my friends who are the biggest movie cynics came out of Free Guy absolutely raving about it. I was gonna wait to watch it at home, but I may go and support our local over 21 theater and watch. Also, we need to do something like the "Countdown?" but for Cocomelon.

Reminisce would have bombed w/ or wo/ the pandemic, unfortunately. That kind of movie is rarely successful this day in age. It would have needed a big star like Leo or Denzel in order to have been even a moderate success.

Regarding what aged people can enjoy which movies, I did think it was weird that a majority of the people who watched Snake Eyes (the GI Joe movie, not the Nic Cage one) in my theater were probably like 55 years old or older

So I have no idea how KZfaq ads are picked, but I have seen more suicide squad trailers the past two weeks on Dans charting episodes than I saw on any videos before it came out. Also, along this line, I think Free Guy had a tremendous marketing campaign. Ryan Reynolds is fantastic at marketing, I'm not an easy sell for things, yet he got me signed up for mint mobile.

Is Free Guy the biggest underdog BO story of the summer? EDIT: I feel for you Dan with seeing the trailer for Reminiscence in front of a lot of films the past few months. Having a subscription service like A-List makes seeing the same trailers for months on end get really annoying (I still have nightmares from the trailers for The Turning, Like A Boss, and Bloodshot).

I have A-List too and average about 6 movies a month. I love the theatrical experience and the “getting ready to watch a movie” feeling when the lights go down, but seeing the same trailers over and over again does get very annoying.

I've started just showing up about 15-20 minutes after the "start time" so I miss most of the trailers. I used to love getting the early for the trailers, but I agree that when you go often you get sick of seeing the same trailers over and over. Plus I hate horror movie trailers because they give away so much. I had to just close my eyes when I saw the trailer for Ready or Not after they just straight up showed how three people for killed and I was like "Fuck, I was excited to see this and now I feel like I have, thanks trailer." Fortunately it was still a good movie, but I really wish I had seen it without seeing any of the trailers first.

@@toddhollen I’m just mostly on my phone during trailers now with my headphones in (cause these trailers are too damn loud (I swear they’re louder than the main presentation)). I refuse to miss the trailers cause I might end up missing something that’s theater exclusive (like the Tenet teaser that was shown throughout fall 2019).
