The Haas UMC series of machines ( UMC500, UMC750, UMC1000, UMC1250 ) are probably the most popular 5 axis machines in use today. Many schools are even lucky enough to have these in their shops due to their great pricing. The only problem is these machines can be a little intimidating when first getting started, camInstructor to the rescue!
This lesson will walk you through step by step machining a part on the UMC machines. This lesson was created using a UMC750, but the steps will be the same across all the machines. We start at the very basics of machine power-up. Get into hand jogging the machine in all axes as you will need to be comfortable with this for the following steps; tool loading and tool offsetting, which is done with the Renishaw table setter. Next, loading the work piece into the 5x dovetail vise followed by using the Renishaw spindle probe to set the work offsets. Last, loading the program, checking it for errors, and then running the program.
The lesson consists of a PDF document with step by step instructions as well as images of the procedures. For those who don't like books, there are also videos covering the step by step instructions. There is also a Setup Sheet covering tools and work holding. The nc program needed to make the part.
