Freedivers can often get blocked sinuses. Sinus problems when freediving are one of the main things that can stop a person diving. fixing blocked sinuses is possible but diving with a cold or with a sinus infection does usually lead to further complications with your sinuses.
In this video I cover:
-What are sinuses and why they can be problematic for freediving?
-What causes sinus issues?
-How to solve our sinus issues
-How to treat and deal with sinus injuries like bleeding from the nose.

A good jog works pretty good for me, but I never did it for the purpose of diving. I did it because I had a head cold and felt miserable. Jogging seems to break up the congestion in my head and I generally feel much better within four hours after jogging. Thanks for the video, I'll work in a jog before my next dive and see how things go.

Quality as always Adam, editing even getting abit better cause it feels nice and flowy haha. I've only been freediving for like a month and had some sinus issues on my Aida 2 course right at the end of the dive session. While in Turkey I've found that sometimes it's useful to equalise strong cause it may help push air into those nifty little spaces. Anyway hopefully can hit 10m finning tomorrow cause never been down that far, I just want to experience freefall ;) Well that's a pretty big comment that no one will read but it's fun to jot your thoughts down once in a while. Keep up the good work 🐬

hahah Dan! It's like therapy- pouring your heart out to KZfaq haha. I hope you get down because you deserve to feel that Freefall! It's beautiful :) And definitely equalising strong definitely helps at times.....sometimes I do have to be a little careful with the information I put out online because there are some things i'd like to say that may not be best to just throw out into the online world where I dont know everyone's experience levels and haven't dived with them personally...things like telling people to do forceful equalisations etc which can carry an element of risk.

Ohh man i've been really looking forward to this video ... I have really the worst sinuses in the world i've been diagnosed by many doctors that i have issues including pansinusities , nasal polyps, IT hyper , Deviated septum , post-Bilateral fess , ..... I've been diving for 5 years and I just can't stop diving feeling that is the only thing in my life that i feel good about it and happy while i'm doing it ...so many doctors said that i needed surgery 3 of them , so I did all of them last January, i had to rest for 3 months before went back for diving again , and guss what still had some issues and pain under my eyebrows and cheeks , went back to doctor and was diagnosed with allergy this time , so i'm on medication since then and still fighting against them with all my heart i just can't quit diving so help me God , tried all natural remedies, and all things u mentioned in this video , never could dive as a normal person and reach depths i wanted because of them , and doctors just keep saying be patient and u will get cured, did all the allergies tests and the result is nothing .... Don't know what to do after all of this

Hi adam Tips that I found also useful through trial are chin tucked in on duck dives and decent, diet 24 hours before due to bad hay fever, no dairy in morning before or late evening before dive days. Plus hay fever excentuates with beer, so if I drink the night before I switch to clear spirits. Hope that helps someone out there.

This is literally my problem. I am perfectly fine outside of the water. At the moment I'm diving everyday, actually spearfishing. After about half an hour or an hour my nose becomes very congested and I blow out all of this snot and it gets better. I continue the process but after 2 hours or so it's almost impossible to clear it. However once I'm out of the water is perfectly fine again. It's very weird it only happens when I'm diving.

Great video, lots of good tips ive never heard before! My ears are filled with olive oil. When i took the scuba course and had problems equalizing, the intructors told me to put olive oil in my ears for some hours or over night. This will dissolve your earwax ( which is good for equalization? ). after you just flush it out with (not too) hot water. Might have to repeat several times. Have no idea if it works, or if the instructor was just messing with me. When i think about it, it would have been a good prank..

I have allergic rhinitis. I take Antihistamine (zycast) the night before the dive right after sleeping. This used to be my routine even before diving. And when waking up, I make sure I dont trigger the allergy so I stay away from sudden temperature change and dusts. Like putting on socks to make sure my feet doesnt get cold. Thanks for the video. I had sinus problems since I started. I have mixed mucus with blood. I went to the doctor and he told me that my tubes are swelling and I won’t be able to dive. I’m allergic to dust and I suffer from it a lot. So I’m not sure if I have swelling tubes bc of the allergy or if it’s just how it is. Does swelling mean I could never dive?

Thanks so much for all your advise so far ,really helpful! I hope it isn't answered already! I've experienced some problems with equalizing my right ear channel ...it's quite often not possible to equalize at all and diving is more less impossible as it starts hurting a lot after only going down more than 2-3m so I need to rest a bit while snorkeling around rocks or so on the surface until it is possible again to equalize. I spearfish for about two years now but this problem only appeared a few month ago and it's getting a bit more frequently and resistant, so I'm getting a bit concerned what to do etc..I've bought and used Doc's Ear Plugs and it helps a bit but also hurts in due to the not very very soft silicon(might need to size down as well)...and I'm looking for alternatives or better ear plugs but can't find anything really than the freaking overpriced SurfEars 2.0 ..the Doc's Ear Plugs are already stupid expensive in my opinion for some tiny bit of silicon... SO if someone out in our freedive family is out there with some more tips to solve this issue or recommendation for good working ear plugs...please give it to me :P Cheers Tilo I will try the 3M EAR CLEAR plugs as well...at least a reasonable price ;)

One personal experience. Blocked sinuses above my eyes forced me to push a lot to equalize them. As result my ear drums (where the air passage was just fine) were pushed to hard out and during emersion stopped to work. Braking emersion didn´t help, diving another meter and continuing emersion niether. As result I reached surface with a lot of pain in my ear and three following days cleaning my ear from blood. Three weeks out of water. I was really stupid going on diving (fishing) that day! Luckily this happened at 4 meters. As the pain and ear drum trauma was increasing every meter of emersion, can´t emagine what would happen comming back from 15 meters... And one more tip for those with not ideal sinuses as I do. While equalising, I do close my eyes. Sound ridiculus, but it helps! Happens some times that the air I am pushing is coming out of my eye corner. Wierd?!

Hi Adam, really enjoy your videos! My left ear is more difficult to equalize than the right one, because the left tube tends to clog more quickly. On top of that I have a condition that whenever I increase pressure to equalize, air escapes right underneath my left eye (tear channel?), rather than that it helps to equalize the left ear. I wonder if you are aware of such cases and if you have any suggestions how to deal with them. I generally find it costs too much energy (and concerns) and I would like to minimze the effort.... Keep it up! Cheers xxx

Just curious. How do we know if air is coming out of the eye duct.

Hi Adam! I have a Deviated Septum since I was young because of trauma. Maybe this answers my question about equalization. I really can't equalize even in 3 meters. When I try to equalize, air leaks toward the corner of my eyes and still never equalize my ears. Thanks for the video, I'll consult a doctor from now on.

Hey Don :) deviated septums can stop a person from being able to equalise so I hope that when you see a doctor they give you good news!!!

Hey everyone, so I am new to freediving. I have noticed during my last couple free dives over the last few days that my phlegm has had a fair amount of blood in it. To the point it’s pretty much solid red. That said my nose is not bleeding at all. It is only the phlegm that has blood in it. Should I be concerned? And should I hold off diving for a week?

I used to have chronic sinus issues and I got surgery about a year and half ago, I was doing great after the surgery but recently popped a blood vessel while free diving spearfishing and it was really painful. I was a little congested but still kept diving and pushing my self to the limit. Besides rest, any other recommendation? Oh btw, your videos are great, very helpful!!!!

thanks buddy :) well to be dead honest there is only rest. For someone like yourself it's best not to rush your body as you already had issues with your sinuses. Just rest and take it easy :)

Sinus squeeze is absolutely horrific. I’m an advanced scuba diver and experienced this because I thought I had recovered from a cold but clearly I hadn’t. It was horrific, like the front of my brain was going to explode, there was blood everywhere and it took me weeks to get better😮‍💨

My nosebleeds today at 7:00 am when I dived at 12 meters to spear fish after a month of break. I thought I was gonna able to do it directly since our main spot for spearfishing was at 18-22 meters. To be honest we don't have any proper lesson since We only just a local part-time fishermen. I'm looking for some advice, should I rest for weeks and then when I decided to dive back is it fine to directly dive at 10meters above?

Hey Adam and fellow viewers, recently I experienced a pain behind my left eye about 2-3 meters down. I’ve never felt it before but it was a day ender for sure. Did 5 or 6 dives to around 15-20 meters before the pain came on. Assuming sinus squeez but wanted to see if any other gurus out there had any info

Hi Adam, I just started my freedive course level 1 here in Indonesia and on my first dive I had problems with sinuses pain. I'm willing to become a instructor and I'm very afraid to struggle with my sinuses problems. And the weird thing is that I don't feel my self congested, just pain above my eyes while I descend.

I have a question. We always hear about not diving alone. I do try to take this seriously, but due to circumstances of where I live etc. I can’t really go to a diving school and I don’t know anyone with experience. Could I together with a buddy learn freediving as we progress together or would that still be unsafe?

I mean, if the buddy also doesn't know how to freedive, he can't help you properly if you have any trouble. But if you stay on the shallows first and practice the duck dive and so one I guess it's fine, call it snorkeling if you want

Hi from Greece !Question about the mask equalization ... I spearfish and after a considerable time of 1h in freediving i feel the mask getting sucked on the face and "strange" noises come out from my nostrils like "bubbling". Sometimes when i get the mask off and lean forward dense water is coming out of the nose. After that i find it difficult to equalize with frentzel. I have suffered from sinusitis in the past , which comes and goes, not regularly. Any proposals to face that problem ?
@AdamFreediver
@AdamFreediver 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me that after a period of time your sinuses are getting irritated and you're getting some water in your nose and in your sinuses so I think the solution here is to just make sure you equalise the mask properly all the time to take the pressure off your sinuses and that will also stop water going into your nose. In the beginning you may have to overequalise the mask but after a while you'll know just how much you have to do it to keep your sinuses working well :)

Hi Adam, I actually have a harder time equalizing now that I had my septum fixed. I had 15 percent airflow in my right, and 5 percent in my left. Now is open and I'm having huge trouble, with that and clear snot in my mask. Lol

Anyone have issues with toothache and sinuses? When I dive down after around the 8 meter mark I get a massive toothache. No problem equalising and the pain subsides as soon as I go back up. Might need to go to the dentist. But I hope is a simple inflamed sinus. Any thoughts about tooth issues and free diving?

often this is just from decay in a tooth. if you have a big hole in a tooth the pressure presses against it and it hurts :)

You damaged your sinuses!When your nose bleeds that means that something popped in you sinuses and thats why its streaming blood,,when that happens dont dive until it heals it can take 1 week 2 weeks even less.That doctor doesnt know anything clearly what he should said is Just dont dive for sometime.

Hi Adam, I know you posted this video a while ago but Ipm hoping you can help me out, I´ve been free diving for a little while now but I´m still a begginer, the last 4 times i went in the wáter and started descending I could experience pain in my forehead, at first I thoght I wasn´t ecualizing properly but I kept going down.. up to the point where I got blood coming out of my nose, so the next time I tried it same thing happened until the 4th time where a lot of blood came out and it was extremely painfull, what do you suggest for recovery? But most importantly, I have cronic sinus problems, it did not come from a cold, yet I don´t want to stop free diving, how can I free dive with this condition? Thanks!
@AdamFreediver
@AdamFreediver 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Alejandra :) So you don't have to quit freediving. :) Usually a ruptured sinus can take 3 - 14 days to heal depending on how bad it was. I think right now the goal should be to get your sinusitis under control because once you do that you'll be a whole new freediver :)

you've got me a bit worried, i've got a slightly deviated septum and I'm going on holiday to do an AIDA course in a couple of months. I can equalize my ears ok, they go out about the same time, or very close together - is it likely I will still have a problem with my sinuses? I guess I will grab a neti pot and start a steam regime to give myself the best chance anyway.

When you lay face up underwater then water will flood into your sinuses and nasal cavity and it will irritate those airways. It's best not to do it

What about a problem with one ear equalize worse than other? It happens almost all time. I have one method to fix it with salt water but it is only temporary.Maybe there are some ways to try? yoan aerodrone is that mucus stopping you from equalising or does it always come out when you surface? Any chance that you may be coming off the back of a cold and it's just phloem? Normally the general rule of thumb is if there's no pain it shouldn't be doing any harm. Hope this helps :)

Absolutely that's the best way to fully determine if it's ruptured or not but most likely your tubes are tight and that's the hissing you hear :)
