Drumeo 1:49 rather than calling this the balance point I tell my students this is the Bounce point. the balance point is where both halves of the drumstick weigh the same and the stick is perfectly balanced. You are finding that sweet spot where the stick wants to bounce the most. at 2:00 you found the balance point. Otherwise, great video!

I’m 61 and always loved the bass. I’m just starting to learn the bass guitar, but since I’m on disability, I can’t afford lessons. I’m gonna teach myself with books and YT videos. @@bekind3050 Amazing 💪 Get ahead faster by meticulously learning how to tune your drums properly, pick one of the three possibilities that suits the sound/style you like 🥁 and you'll enjoy every minute of it ten times more. I started at 11, made a kit on a plank with pots, pans & a tambourine, nails & apple juice can bottom cut-outs, for cymbals. Then a snare drum at 14. .... and the stand. Later bought 2 used kits & merged'em together at 16 years old. But I only learned how to tune when I bought my brand new kit at age 19, in '91. .... Man the tuning mastery changed everything. I was good and much tighter all of a sudden. 8 years later. KZfaq didn't exist then, ( lucky you ) but the drum shop had a little 8 page book for sale. I must still have it. I still play that kit, and love it so much. Keep Rocking & Be kind ✨

When I was a kid I joined my elementary school fife and drum core as a drummer. I later formed a small local band but never considered myself a great drummer. I found myself playing very tense and tiring out easily, and my focus was terrible. It seemed like I used the same beat with slight variations for nearly every song we played. Looking at your video and that of others I see that if I started all over again as a beginner and build a proper foundation perhaps I could develop the skill to really enjoy drumming and possibly become a better drummer with patience and practice. At 64 years old I am thinking of purchasing a drum set at some point. I will purchase a practice pad first though in order to learn some basic techniques first before I take the plunge. In other words, I want to earn the drumset because I believe it will be more rewarding when I finally get it. I want to tell you and others how much I appreciate these great lessons. Regards, Richard

Was mine too until I started practicing with strictly my weak hand for only 15 minutes a day, alternating between double strokes and even SINGLE strokes just the left hand at slow / medium speed metronome (i.e. 5 min doubles, 5 min singles, 5 minutes doubles)... I watched a great lesson in which the guy said that when your dominant hand is louder than the weak one, dont soften the dominant hand hits, but rather strengthen the weak hand hits and start swinging it harder so that it matches your dominant hand and its more on time. You'll be surprised how quickly you forget which hand used to be better and it works immediately the first day. ##ambidextrous.

I am 56 years old and am just starting to learn to play and have watched many videos, but you, Mike, are the best at explaining things in an easy to understand way. I want to learn very systematically, from A to Z, and am sure that your DVD's and workbooks will teach me everything I need to know. Thanks for doing what God created you to do!

Thank you so much for these amazing lessons!! The pace of your instructions, the level of detail, and the video angles are all so incredibly helpful! My 9-yr old learned so much more than I can help with my musical background (which doesn’t include percussion). Thank you for breaking down each technique into micro parts. Your lessons truly enhance my son’s practice and I'm so glad we discovered your videos!

Mike, Thanks so much for your very well done video. The explanation of how to hold (correctly) the drumsticks was "Great". I played drums for several years (long, long ago); I'll date myself, I had a set of Rogers, Cozy Cole Model. I'm 70 years old now and just ordered a set of Roland TD-25-KV; I can't wait to start up again. I'll be watching out for your videos, thank you again for all of your hard work and efforts.

I'll be honest, I still prefer Jim Chapin's way to teach doubles when you accent the second note using your fingers you end up with a more even double stroke, you understand the use of your fingers and you don't risk having that weird feel that you get when you start out where each secondary note is to close to it's primary. if you accent the second stroke with your fingers in a snap, with instant release of pressure, then you give meaning and time to that second note in your muscle memory. Having said this, these are all great places to start :D

As a new drummer, I really appreciate all of the advice. I've pretty much set myself a challenge to learn drums (at last the basics) with in a month. I've had about five hours practice time on an acoustic kit so far and then I mostly just practice on a single Billy Hyde practice pad at home using Zildjian 5B sticks. Now, I have a few more ideas to work with :')

yeah, I just practice whenever I can get the time at my college for now, I'm up to 7 hours now and hoping to have done 11 or more by the end of this week :) I start playing drums for a band at college the following week so it's going to be a good challenge! I don't have my own kit either, I used to have a little electric one but it was never great. I remember breaking it because it was a cheap build but it was still very fun. Pillows sound like a good idea, I might give that a try! :)

+Creativecoverz Music is all about presentation these days. He's got a technique that works for him (as much as I personally dislike seeing it). He's doing better than all of us, and he's been given tons of advice on improving his technique. He's comfortable, and while I think technique should be developed over a lifetime, he is getting millions of views. I can't say that and I have my music degree in percussion having studied under one of Vic Firth's students. I'm in no way bashing Cooper. I'm just trying to express that a lot of times, high energy players with multiple cameras, and good sound equipment and a repertoire of primarily top 40 songs, are likely to be successful as long as their chops are decent. In this case, Coopers chops aren't too shabby.

I've used to dabble with drums as a teenager and never had any formal lessons. I dropped the drums and concentrated on singer and playing occasional percussion. Now at 61 I've bought a drumpad to spice our vocal duo up a bit, and found any basic drumming skills I may have had, had completley disappeared over the years. Despite watching several videos my left hand was as good as useless. However after watching the advice in this video, I went back to basics and sorted my grip out properly and hey presto. My playing is much much better. I can't thank you enough Mike for taking the time to produce this video. Your a lifesaver.

Yeah, I think, this. A year or so ago I signed up for a drum school and the teacher said I've got all kinds of rhythm etc. but what are they gonna say? You've got talent! You need to take plenty of lessons from me! But he wanted me to be orientated toward the drum kit from the start and I have like zero room. Like, my living space is so small, maybe I could have a snare drum. And I didn't have all this money for a snare and stand anyway. I was going to practice using my practice pad and I got a foot pedal to drum on my laundry tub. But, in a month I'll have enough room for as big a drum kit as I like, so I am getting interested in this again. But really, I feel like I could do a year just learning snare drum riffs before branching out.

I think the 'playing from the wrists' section might be misleading to beginners because the forearms are necessary most of the time while playing drums. I think the wrist motion has to sync and work together with smooth forearms lifts as well, especially when playing louder styles as pop or rock. But I agree with the idea wrists are absolutely important and should be trained both isolating them from the arm, and syncing them with the arm, both forearm lifts and moeller tech.
@Scarf3086
@Scarf3086 9 жыл бұрын
tremebondo1 That's really true. I find I also need to use my shoulder a lot of the time for crashing or moving around the kit, so that has to also be in sync with the wrist and forearm. There really is a lot to it, and I think learning how to hit each individual piece of the kit is a really important step for beginners (you don't play exactly the same on the snare as you do on a hi hat or floor tom, nor are you going to hit with the same force on every instrument). I think that aspect gets really lost on lots of beginners and teachers too.

My first drum lesson in Carlow, Ireland in 1986 (with Mr. Hennessey) was very like this.I just wanted to play drums, he had a great big blue drum set in the room ,but he gave me a heavy hard cover book and sticks and taught me how to do single,double strokes and a flim flam before he allowed me to play his drums.Years later I played with a band called The Hothouse Flowers for one gig in Sligo,Ireland. This video is exactly what young or new drummers need to watch.

It's just like working out or doing cardio. If you run a mile every day, you may feel dead at the end for the first few weeks, but after a while it gets easier and easier. Or if you are repping a certain weight on bench, squat, incline etc., eventually that weight is going to be easier to lift. Your muscles just have to build up to being used in that way, but the point of this video is to make sure when you start that you build them the right way
@davonwav

After a lifetime playing, I see beginners that are playing with high tension. The least amount causes fatigue fast & you loose speed/ fluidity. The key is a very relaxed grip while grooving, that extends to arms & legs. I gigged for years and it was common for me to drop a rt. hand cymbal stick about once every couple gigs. Even playing 6 nights a week, 5 sets I never felt exhausted. Grip firms up for solos, but never choking a stick.
