Learn To Play Drums In 90 Days:
Here's a simple, effective, 5-minute practise pad workout! It's targeted towards beginners, but drummers of any skill level can benefit from this. There are 5 patterns total which you do for 1 minute each!
If you have a Drumeo P4 practice pad, try moving these exercises around the different surfaces! For example, try playing the first four notes on one surface and moving to another for the second bar. Or split up both hands completely! Who knows... You might just come up with some cool musical ideas you can move to the kit!

Thank you for your video. I'm getting back to teaching after 12 years away from it. I watched your video to help get me refreshed and get back to thinking like a drum teacher. You and I teach 100% the same way. I felt such a sense of connection. I have been nervous about my own teaching abilities, especially looking at the qualifications of the other drum teachers I will be working with at my school. Your video reminded me and reassured me that being successful as a music teacher is not about credentials... it's about how you deliver the material. The most important thing is patience and I love how you have really emphasized and explained that. Great job teaching us teachers how to teach. You are very qualified and justified to make this video. Thank you for your work and perhaps make more of these videos aimed at teachers. You could narrow in on specific teaching challenges for each video. You could also zero in on specific teaching areas like "how to teach rudiments" or any other area of drum instruction. The videos would also be meta-teaching for the drum students as it would help them understand how we try to reach them and what teachings are important to them. Thank you again, really great video.

Drumeo, I first started playing drums at 13 years old, a guy down the street from me played in the Marching band, and the orchestra when he was in high school, i was 5 years younger than he was. I started taking Drum lessons from him. The first time i went to his house i took my Snare, he looked at me and said, NO SNARE, use my practice pad, I want you to learn how to play a Flam. I said what is that? he showed me, and i want you to practice that for 3 weeks until you get it right. He was Correct. He has now been playing with the Detroit Sympathy Orchestra for over 30 years, I wish that i would have listened to him, Cousin Figel

Oh my god, this is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find. My 11yo daughter has asked for a drum set 2 years in a row so this year I’ve bought her one. And we both want more than anything for her to become the drummer she so far dreams of being. This was so clear and fascinating and I too now am going to learn. Me and my daughter will learn something amazing together.

This is very good! I have several families from my church approaching me to teach their kids drum lessons. I've been playing drums for nearly 28 years, but I've never given a drum lesson in my life. I had a really good percussion instructor, but she was VERY advanced in her method and rather unforgiving in her execution. This is an awesome aid! Thanks again!

Hi Mike! My name is Matty. I am 57 years old. My wife and I take pictures for a facebook page helping all our local bands in South West Forida. Over the course of the last 5 to 6 years we have had the privilege of meeting many musicians that we call friends. One of the things I always wanted to do was play the drums to some of my favorite songs. Well I have a bass player, drummer, friend who thought it would be a great idea to surprise a drummer friend of ours who plays the drums in a band he plays bass in. He's a great drummer. So now I going to learn to play the drums. I bought sticks set up a small stool for snare and a higher night stand for the high hat. I have been watching different things on you tube and have got down the basic beats somewhat after the first few hours of practice. I might add I'm writing down how many hours of practice I'm doing or minutes each day. I came across your videos the other day and I thought to myself you make great sense. I have been practicing with my fake drums for 2 weeks now on and of "work' that thing I have to do kind of bites into a little. I'm so motivated from watching you that I can't wait for my drums. Thank you for what you do I'll be watching every day. PS: By the way I love AC DC, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and a few more and I'm going to learn them. You Rock! I'm at 3 hours and 47 min over the course of two weeks. First playing "practicing"goal is 20 hours.

I started taking lessons in '76. I sat behind a drum set (in a lesson) in 1982, if memory serves me. By then I had been through the NARD book and syncopation, and others with 2 teachers. Thank God I was playing in school and had already landed a couple of gigs. But, if life hands you a practice pad, get good with rudiments! 😂🥁

It's funny 'cause I started to teach a kid 1 year ago and I was only 14. I've played for over 7 years. (Now I'm 15) but I had never teach a kid. So I was thinking "If I was a beginner what should I want to learn?" So I wrote down the things I was thinking of and it was exactly this that you showed. I got very happy to see that I teach the right things for a beginner. And I love how my student shine with happiness when he learns something new. Drumeo you're the best!! Nicely done! What amazes me is that your approach is extremely similar to mine. Including Billy Jean I call that the money bea. I developed this approach through trial and error. From my experience the ears are extremely important. So that is why I start there. I was to taught to read first then play what I read without any real emphasis on developing listening skills.I teach my students how to listen and what to listen for. As far as feel goes I have them dance. It doesn't have to be great dancing just feel the beat. Then I have them sit done and play the song again. With a smile on their face it feels different. I believe I coined the phrase "Can't dance can't play"! Thanks Drumeo for a great lesson!

I teach kids the drums at a music camp every summer. Over the years I've picked up these tricks and I enjoyed the video. I have to reiterate from the video that patience is key. Sometimes you just have to let them work it out. Also, sometimes it's okay to let people just keep going. I had this one hot shot kid who was actually pretty good for his age. He started playing these crazy fills and so I cut the song off and just yell "do a drum solo" and he lets it rip. Sure it wasn't the best solo but it kept him and the other kids excited

Naming the drums...quiet a nice idea. I will adapt that plan. You show a very human approach of teaching. For keeping motivation and feeling alive, i often fetch myself a bass or guitar and give a simple riff to drum on, so it might sound like "music" and not "just drumming". And i tell'em to join a band for fun to develope the communicational aspects of making music.

Where were you when I needed a drum teacher? Great advice and I can see your students excelling with you as a teacher. Great video. At 10 yrs old I went to one of my sisters weddings, and her husband was in a band. His band played for him and my sister that night at the wedding reception. I was asked during on one of their breaks if I would like to play the drums. I said I don't want to hurt them by pounding on them too hard.. LOL! I played anyways and everyone was blown away. I was told that I had the gift to play drums someday. I believe it was about 12 yrs old is when I started. The teacher I had sucked!! We must have spent four months on the snare drum learning the notes and beats, and so on. I always did my lessons and excelled at it. The teacher would never let me play all the drums. I was still on the snare drum for five months when I got bored and quit. I got too frustrated. My parents already bought me a used 4 piece drumset with just the high hat. No cymbals or extra tom. It was fine with me. I was happy to just have one. It wasn't until I was 14 yrs old that I went to a different place with a woman instructor. We started out right away using all the drums after going through the bad habits that last teacher I had taught me. In 2 months she already had me playing drums. First song I learned was "Hurt so Good" by John Cougar. She had me play in recitals and finally was in a band 2 1/2 yrs in High School. I became disabled about 28 yrs old and no 51 yrs old. I want to play again, but would have to purchase the electronic drum set since I live in a condo. I would have to learn a different way of playing drums since I have limited mobility, but I love challenges and I am ready to take it on. I subscribed by the way. Sorry for the long message.

Got a set at five years old for Christmas... 1958. Started lessons in 1964 for 13 years... plenty of books. At 69, still playing in a band. Looking to start teaching again, but mostly for kids w/ special needs. I think the buzz roll on a pad is good to teach, and triplets from the beginning. My instructor would not let me go on a set for a long time... figuring I wouldn't practice my reading and rudiments on a pad if I had a set... I disagree w/ this, as I see you do. I wanted to quit all the time. Set right away, but I feel reading too. Love your video very much.

Nice video Mike, thanks to you and drumeo for putting these series online. Here's a question that comes to my mind : What are your tips for making students that don't have a drum kit at home to practice ? I recommend my students to get a pair of sticks & a practice pad but they're not too motivated by that. I often explain them that they can practice the basic coordination of these beginner beats without drums but it's kinda hard to motivate them. I also recommend them to go in a rehearsal studio once a week for 1 hour but they don't always do it. Do you have some tips on this subject ? Thanks and keep it up man.
