Freezing Cold Wild Camp on Wild Boar Fell & a Chicken Curry on the Trangia

Joined by my friend Ciaran, we headed for a wild camp on Wild Boar Fell in the Yorkshire Dales.
The forecast predicted a cold westerly wind with the chance of some snow showers in the early hours. Just the way we like it 🥶.
Once we reached the summit of the fell we pitched our shelters. I was using my SilPoly Trailstar from Mountain Laurel Designs, and Ciaran was in his Durston Gear X-Mid 1P.
We were able to take advantage of the stone shelter at the trig point to protect us from a bitterly cold westerly wind whilst we used the Trangia 25 to cook a chicken curry to warm our bones.
The next morning we endured some pretty hostile conditions while we returned to the car via Swarth Fell.

Wish the visibility from the summit had have been a bit Better but really enjoyed it all the same. Cracking video, as always. That looked a very tasty wild boar curry on chicken fell! 🤣 It's been ages since I've been up there and it's tough going in those conditions but that summit plateau/ridge is quite something when it's clear. I remember that boggy approach too!

Spot on Steve mate, weather looked a bit wild 😮, but great at the same time 👍, I have the same thing as you with sleep bag foot box getting a bit dampish, inner net definitely improves it, video quality of the cooking with your new camera looks great in that low light, atb Mick 👍

Lovely spot that. Can’t beat boring sheltered away from the horrible weather knowing you’re going to be warm and dry. I like the new Sony shots mind ya. Footage is looking ace of it. They are another level aren’t they. Master class as always provided good top tier scran too. Really enjoyed it. Hopefully see you on a hill soon. Atb Mark.

I reckon the GoPro still has the edge when it’s bright and sunny because its stabilisation is unbelievable whereas the Sony really needs to be on a tripod. @@belowaveragewildcamper yeah I love my Sony for my photography. They put everything to shame. I have the go pro 12 now and manage good low light as it lets me make a custom preset where I limit the iso so it isn’t noisy. It’s a good feature. Yep the go pro can handle everything and they are so strong. It also allows you to record in every piece of weather too.

Well, I’m pleased you asked. I did a night class at Gateshead College. An NVQ Level 1 in Professional cooking as it happens, but I really don’t like to go on about it. All the best 🙏

Its a cracking fell that mate I did it last winter in snow over by the cairns great spot.. Good route round too over to swarth fell same route I did.. Interesting see how you get on with inner in ts..I cant make me mind up if I'm too tall for it my head & feet seem to touch either end of inner.. Another cracking trangia masterclass too..tfs Andy..

Cheers Andy. Never made it to the Cairns. Didn’t have time as we wanted to filter water out of that tarn And get pitched before sunset. Might go back on a clearer day and camp Near those cairns. Could have done with a pair of those safety specs you nicked from work the next morning 🤣 I also find the TS inner too small. I’m 6ft and I’m touching both ends as well. Much prefer the TS without an inner but when spin drift or insects are a risk There’s no other option. Still Love it though. Handles wind unbelievably well. I find the Duomid inner more roomy. All the best mate. 👍

Cheers mate. Really pleased you enjoyed it. I got the inner from Mountain Laurel Designs. I find the inner in the trailstar a bit restrictive with regards space. I much prefer the Duomid when it has the inner inside. The Trailstar is a much better shelter without an inner. All the best mate 🙏

Awesome looking curry! Brave man BTW cooking in the conditions. Have you got a 1/8th inch foam pad to combat the sliding? Got mine from Atom Packs and works a treat. Thanks for uploading, Steve. ATB. 👍

Nice vid again, the curry looked good and nice to see some of the walk, it looked tough. I put more water in my rice then taste to see if it’s done, then drain it, perfect every time, but I haven’t got my nvq level 1 though😂 What make is that hoodie you wear?

Hi Guys, yeah I tried to include a bit more of the hike. Really pleased you enjoyed it. Good advice on the rice. I try to make it without the need to drain it just to reduce on faff and mess and water. But your method would definitely produce better rice. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Nice one Steve. You took a tough way up. Best way IMO is via the col at High Dolphinsty and via the Nab. I park at NY 78342 00086 or just north of there. Anyhow looks as cold as it was last Tuesday for my little trip. There does need to be a sequel though mate, I was hoping to see you guys in deck chairs at the tarn😂on that nice beach.
