excellent illustration of how/why they work. below was a question about just using gravel without the pipe. essentially that is what an underground stream is, a layer of sand/gravel that water flows through. the speed at which the water is able to flow in gravel, verses the speed at which water flows in the pipe is why the french drain is a vast improvement over just using rock/gravel. when you really have need of a french drain, economically it is the best fix, although it could be costly to install. the ROE is quickly realized.

But I still can't. The drain coil isn't flowing & I haven't even put it in the Trench, just tested it on the surface with a hose. No water makes it to the other end 10 meters away.

Under Structure Repair has migrated to Charlotte and we do Encapsulations. On occasion, the crawlspace has beyond vapor and has standing water. These videos have proven to be priceless and not only do we thank you but the homeowners do too. It's hard slow work, but it's got to be done. Our weakest area seems to be making sure that there is a continual drop toward the gathering area. On the wall opposite the sump pump, we seem to have to start at almost ground leve lto be able to create a downward motion. Are we making it harder than it has to be? ive told about 5 people to call Apple Drains

It's amazing how some people struggle with the concepts of how these systems work. It's actually very simple, and fail-proof for a long long time if installed correctly.

Google up "Entropy", nothing is permanent. Besides, I said a long long time, and as everyone knows that is in the 15-25 year range, you'll be moved away by then. How these systems wear out is by silt filling up the voids in the gravel over time. Since the digging of the trench is the majority of the work, replacing the gravel and pipe is a much lesser task. Besides, would you rather be ankle-deep in water for the next several years, or chop of $10-15K for a lot regrading job?

In clay rich soil, even in you bed in a good deal of gravel pointing the holes down will eventually lead to a clay collecting around the rocks near the pipe. Water pressure acts to compact this clay into place and very little of it escapes through the drain which eventually blocks flow. Once this happens the only way to clean the clay from the rock is to dig up the entire drain and reset it taking the accumulated clay with you. It's better to bury a little deeper and point the holes up, as the water drops into the drain the clay and silt tend to go with it. As the clay collects in the rock bed the force of the water pushes it into the drain and provided you have cleanouts you can clear the drain of clay periodically without having to re-bed it. Filtration fabric placed directly around the pipe will filter clay and sediment for a short time. Once enough sediment collects on the fabric it keeps water out of the drain. IF you use filter fabric the best places are to line the sides of the trench. Stop and lay over excess about 12" from the top of the trench so that water can flow in from above that table when the filter fabric eventually clogs.
@tanyaroyredcar

Not sure if I agree with the water pressure theory. sediments from above - sure. clays placed on top of / or in vicinity of drain will wash close to the drain and eventually block the drain. Placing a membrane on top of any gravel and underneath any uppermost clays will help to resist fine sediments from blocking the drain from above.

can you explain why is the drain pipe necessary? it looks like the water runs all around it anyway.
@charleswillsonpeale5739
@charleswillsonpeale5739 8 жыл бұрын
+Bethany Lang That's the whole problem, is the water doesn't run/flow. It will saturate the lawn. Eventually it will overflow making a swamp/bog of one's lawn too. This can leach into one's basement/ foundation. Causing expensive cracks in the foundation and, possible black mold. This is caused because the lawn won't drain properly. Doesn't matter if it's the angle/ pitch or, because of the soil. (Won't absorb ,too much clay)
@ForbiddenUser403

I think he means.. Why even use the pipe, just dig the trench fill it with gravel. More water was flowing through the gravel than the pipe.

I think the video is clear. The pipe has a smooth surface. When the pipe is laid to a slope, the water flows by gravity. Without the pipe, the water ponds up and it will gradually evaporate or infiltrate into the subsoil. The process is not effective if the subsoil consists of clay materials. In such case, water will remain in the soil for a longer time. Placing french drains will help to take this water away.

You can do that if, and only if, the pipe is wrapped in geo-textile, a second layer of geo on top of the gravel , and under the topsoil will prevent silt from plugging the gravel up.

A French Drain isn't to drain a single point like a downpipe, the design is intended for areas where standing water collects. The idea is to drain say, the entire length of your foundation, rather than a 2ft space.
